I think you would probably like the LOTR movies. Check out the Extended Editions because there are several important scenes added back in and the pacing is better, especially for the first two films.

I really enjoy the HP movies and books as well, it's quality material. It starts off light and gets pretty dark as it goes along.

Hmm....it's the same question, film-wise, as the order to view the Star Wars Saga...and for me it's the same response. View the EE's of LOTR first, then watch the Hobbit films as prequels.

AFTER the initial viewing of the Star Wars Saga or LOTR/Hobbit, they work nicely watching consecutively, for me (1 through 6, upon completion of the Hobbit trilogy).

Eh...either way, when it comes to the books. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit as a bedtime story for his kids (try reading it aloud and you'll see) and hadn't thought about LOTR at that point. He developed LOTR afterwards and it's quite different tonally, and much more complex and detailed and 'adult'.

Having said that, The Hobbit is an absolute delight to read, but I did not read it until after I read LOTR twice and saw the LOTR films several times. So I was already very familiar with that world. The Hobbit then felt like a nice, shorter, lighter tale (but still with great scenes in it), very well-paced book.

The Hobbit films are expanding the book with using material from the LOTR appendices and some other story modifications to link to the LOTR films better, so keep in mind the book and Hobbit films are a different experience, moreso than the LOTR book/films differences. The films are ADAPTATIONS, and for my money, very good ones.

After reading the series the movies are just "there" to me for Harry Potter. They aren't horrible or anything, but they really hold no interest for me and I don't feel like I'm missing out by not watching them.

I still have to finish Harry Potter, so one Sunday I'm probably gonna crash on the couch and knock out all 8 movies.

LOTR though, oh no. I've tried to watch one of them and fell asleep. Never again.

I saw the films first, and liked them so kept bugging my wife with questions on details. She finally gave me 'the look' and just said 'READ THE BOOKS!'

I read the books after that and really enjoyed them, and they did answer all of the questions I had lol.

Nah...the LOTR EE viewing for me, I need three days. One movie each night..it's just too much to marathon them.

I'm a big fan of the Harry Potter movies too (except for the 6th one because of important things they left out). I grew up with those books, so seeing them transferred to the big screen was just awesome for me.

The last time I did it I knocked out Fellowship and Two Towers on Saturday. RotK was Sunday morning (fitting really) and I was bawling for 30 minutes.

I did that too; Fellowship and TT in one shot. It was just too much and diminished Helm's Deep a little bit.

ROTK really pushes the buttons doesn't it? Hell I bawled when I was reading the book, especially when:

Sam: [Both are overcome by exhaustion] Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?

Frodo: No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil... between me... and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!

Sam: Then let us be rid of it... once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!

Second time I watched ROTK in the theater, I sat next to a woman and handed her some Kleenex, "You'll be needing these."

She tearfully thanked me as we all got up to leave. LOL

I think Sean Astin as Sam was one of the best castings of the trilogy. I thought he was fantastic.
