This is the creepiest part for me.

Wouldn't a destroyed phone not ring? Maybe someone who knows more about cell phones can explain this.

Planes that travel over the various oceans always have times where they have no radio contact. Likely the plane crashed into the ocean.

Wouldn't be that odd depending on the radar coverage in the area of the flight path. The 9/11 flights were outside of radar coverage for a good bit of their flight time and that was over major metropolitan continental US. We are talking un/under developed countries at best and empty ocean at best. They could have known they were going to be hours upon hours between radar coverage without thinking anything of it.

Not sure if Cell "towers" work the same way there as here. They might be getting some kind of location ping and trying to locate it before relatives wear out the batteries. Could be in a non-cooperative country so not as simple as a CSI 10 second computer trace.

Could also be a hijacking for ransom or something along those lines and the phones are being blocked by one side or the other while the other side is trying to use them or relatives are using them not knowing what is really going on.

The cell phones ringing and another relative says some app still had an active status until this afternoon is really weird.

Then add that with all the stuff in the plane that sends a signal out, they can't find anything. No black box and it can survive almost anything.

I saw something where if it decompressed almost instantly, losing altitude it could still fly low out of radar coverage with everyone dead on board.

Didn't they find oil slicks in the ocean? I guess that doesn't say anything definitive but it is something anyway.

Didn't have anything to do with the plane.

i think if it were hijacked, we would have heard something by now, why hijack a plane and then keep it a secret?

That was my thought when I was reading about the story this weekend. With that said, haven't they more or less cleared the two guys with fake passports. Apparently they were just seeking asylum.

I don't remember much being made over the Air France flight that disappeared a few years ago. I'm inclined to believe this flight had a similar fate, unfortunately.
