Really seems like a pilot knocked everyone out (maybe himself too), set it and let it run out of gas. I know they said everyone had a pretty clean record but you never truly know someone’s internal struggle until it comes out.

Not being able to find debris besides that one piece is very odd, but at least they found something. With what we know, that’s about the best realistic explanation I could give anyone. Outside that, you’re getting in to paranormal or inexplicable events... I don’t know how much closure that gives anyone since it requires some stretching of what we know. I’m open to it, but I’m not more convinced of it then a pilot losing his mind.
All it takes is one bad day.

I think this is an Occam's Razor situation. The Earth is 70% water. There is no possible way we could scour that much water to find an object 250 feet in length when most of it sank to the bottom of the ocean and the parts that floated have probably deteriorated so much they would eventually sink or to just float in the middle of the ocean with no way to be seen.

I don’t know the science/physics behind it, but it said the one piece recovered was a flapperon and the damage to it indicated that the plane went in to a vertical dive... is it possible the angle or trajectory it hit the water allowed the plane to basically torpedo into and through the water? Then it sunk quicker and cleaner then most wrecks, which are trying to be avoided or controlled as much as possible?

I did like the theory of this aircraft being hijacked remotely, but the lack of someone claiming responsibility makes it seem less likely. I really do believe that’s the type of terrorism and warfare we’ll see in the future, where automated machines (anything with an internet connection, which includes nearly everything) are hijacked and used against the innocent in some way. I don’t believe cybersecurity is nearly up to snuff, either by design or negligence.

As far as I know, the onboard Wifi and entertainment systems are completely separate, isolated systems from the flight controls. It could work, but someone on the plane would have to make it work so they would be connected.

Most of the planes and airports could work without pilots at this point. All they are needed for is to plug in the flight plans and deal with any issues.

Hitting the water at those speeds and mass, would be destructive. I don't think it would stay intact, but who knows if it hit it exactly right. The wings would probably come off. There should be some model out there to determine what would happen.

Well, there is that whole taking off and landing part that is pretty reliant on the pilots still.

Autopilot can do that and usually do it better, pilots are only needed when visibility is low or winds are high. Granted most landings are still manual but US airports have the technology to use autoland.

Autopilot cannot take off yet, it can land but is very, very rarely utilized.

I hadn't really followed, but I didn't know they had found parts of the plane. I thought it was still a total disappearance. I guess the conspiracy theories would say the parts were planted though.
