Reports that they may have detected a ping from the black boxes

(CNN) —In what may turn out to be a major breakthrough in the monthlong search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370, a Chinese patrol ship searching the southern Indian Ocean discovered Saturday the pulse signal used by so-called black boxes, state news agency Xinhua reported.

But the pulse signal has not been confirmed, China's Maritime Search and Rescue Center reported, according to China Communications News, which is the Ministry of Transport's official newspaper.

Xinhua said a detector deployed by the Haixun 01 patrol ship picked up the signal around 25 degrees south latitude and 101 degrees east longitude. "It is yet to be established whether it is related to the missing jet," it said.

I hate to sound cynical, but you would think by now they would confirm it before announcing it.

I hope they find it, but the way this has gone I won't be surprised if three days from now Malaysia says that "ping" was just a dolphin.

Laugh at the conclusive tone of CP's post but his thoughts are not that outlandish.

Not to be trite or obvious, but until it's found, any explanation is plausible given what we have to work with thus far.

I don't think anyone said the thought's were outlandish, the conclusive tone however, was.

The Australian ship w/ the US ping locator has now heard pinging 4 different times. That should go a long way to locating the source.

The thing that confuses me is that I thought the pinger could only be heard from just 2 miles away? Last night on CNN they showed a map of the ocean where all the different pings have been heard. All of them are pretty spread out.. like 50 to hundreds of miles from one another.

I was just thinking what the families are going through that have no idea if there loved ones are alive or not and how I would feel.

Like I said, random question, but how would your place of employment handle this as far as giving time off? Most places will give you 5 days paid of Bereavement, but a situation like this?

Like radio signals there are conditions that can cause them to travel further then normal.
