I didn't catch this. So I'll stop in regards to the subject. But everything I read about the families being notified (Like being stuck on a shuttle bus for an hour waiting, that they started walking to the embassy to hear the news) made me believe that.

At this point, the more pieces they find the more evidence there is. That much is obvious.

The only problem is the more pieces they find, the less "plane" there will be. What if there isn't any evidence of massive pieces? What if everything is ripped and shredded to tens of thousands of pieces, including... bodies and the like?

I don't really know what it's like for there to be a fire on board or for a plane to hit the water, so I wonder how much of a fully intact thing there will be in the end for them to make their final conclusion that will convince everybody.

            Convince everybody of what?

If they only find one piece and it's the wing is that not pretty damning evidence? Or are you talking about convincing people of how the plane went down?

I haven't watched CNN in the past 24 hours, but I'm still reading about this plane landing and stuff like that. Look, I know where the plane is. Other people still cling onto this strange hope.

What I was referring to actually was just finding the plane itself. The only problem is there might not be a "plane itself" if it's scattered across the ocean. I'm just hoping they can find the biggest piece there is.

                Re: Missing Malaysian Plane

I've thought that even if pieces are found, it could still be a cover up for something more diabolical. Just like there are theories about 9/11, JFK, etc. We'll never know for 100% certain besides what we're told.

I'm actually feeling a sense of relief that SOMETHING was found. Or at least that's what it sounds like. Shouldn't be thinking this is over considering all the back and forth, but signs are pointing towards a conclusion.

They have pieces of the planes from the 9/11 attacks and that didn't convince everybody.
The fact is, this investigation was horribly botched. There will be conspiracy tin hat folks and finding the plane in the ocean won't change that.

It amazes me that the Hubble Telescope can peer into deep space but we can't have a satellite identify objects on the ocean more clearly than what we're getting. I always though there were spy satellites capable of reading a newspaper. I guess that was a load of bunk.

I'm curious as to how all these reconnaisasance (poor word choice, I know) missions are paid for? They must be costing a fortune to fly out to the middle of no where every day. Does the airline pick up the tab? Does the country of Malaysia pay for the tab?

I was thinking the same thing, but I think it's because there's a vast area to search. It's not pinpointed on one specific target. It's not quite the same.

But hey, they are finding it. It took time, but it's being found. Not so bad.

I don't think it matters how perfect and flawless any investigation is. There will always be conspiracy theorists out there.

There's a huge difference between looking through the near vacuum of space and a thick and dense planetary atmosphere. No matter how clear it may appear to be, there will always be some degree of atmospheric distortion. Add to that the fact that they're looking for objects on a constantly moving surface that is also very good at bending and diffracting light. Finally, as you increase focusing and resolution power, you lose field of view. There may or may not be spy satellites that can read a news paper, but their field of view would be very small and it would thus be highly impractical to use it to scan thousands of square miles of open ocean.

A little over a week ago I was reading that the US had spent $2.5 million so far. It was said that they set aside $4 million for the search but would not stop if it was reached and the plane was not found. I would assume at this point they are well beyond the $4 million. Total cost for everyone involved has to be mammoth.

Maybe I'm wrong because I've distanced myself from this lately, but seeing things on satellite photos and having things "in hand" are two different things and so far as far as I know they have nothing "in hand".
