I would assume that a country with the technological sophistication of Putin-ville could tell if it's a commercial vs. military vehicle. Alternately, I would assume they could disperse jets to do eyes on and then direct it out of their air space.

Fox News reporting that Putin's boys saying those missles don't have that kind of range.

Saw a retweet a little while ago saying that a Donetsk separatist leader admitted to ordering the shootdown thinking the plane was Ukrainian.

Apparently, right around the time that the Malaysian plane lost contact, Russian separatists in Ukraine bragged on social media that they brought down a "Ukrainian cargo plane."

Ukraine also shot down a Russian airliner in 2001.

The biggest question is why hadn't anyone declared this airspace off-limits? As far as blame goes I think both sides in this conflict are at fault.

I fault Malaysian Airlines for being cheap. British Airways and Air France have been wasting more fuel flying around this dangerous area but I guess safety wasn't Malaysian Airlines top priority due to costs.
I also feel that Russia shot this down because these are sophisticated missiles that require special training. I think people confuse the term rebel and automatically think it's just some random guys with little or no training. Let's just say I don't think that's the case. Putin is a very ruthless man.

I thought they did. Apparently Malaysian Airlines ignored this. Regardless.... as the aggressor you have to make very sure you're not taking down a commercial airline of innocents. The world has to make/keep Putin on his heels right now. He seemed to be getting too comfortable.

In related news, we bum rides from Russia for any present work in outer space? Something is very, very wrong with this entire picture.
