There hasn't been a mainline US airline fatal crash since 2001 (and 1994 if you exclude the September 11th attacks, I believe), and there hasn't been a regional US airline fatal crash since 2008 (The Buffalo crash, which prompted a lot of new regulations that in theory should prevent a repeat).

Airline crashes used to be fairly regular, so it's pretty amazing how far we've come in that regard.

My father flies for a major US airline (American Airlines) as a profession, and he's still alive and kicking (though he will be retiring within the next 7 years).

Of course, I know what you mean about fear not being logical. Being 35,000 feet above the Earth's surface within nothing between you and death but a thin fuselage certainly isn't the most natural feeling in the world!

And just remember, landing is nothing but a controlled fall. Enjoy your next flight!

This is actually what the murals at the Denver airport are about.

It's still crazy to believe with all the technology we have, that a huge plane full of people with smartphones could completely disappear without a trace.

Seriously...never realized how the tracking of some of these planes wasn't really done over oceans...I think newer planes are better, but teaches you how radar and GPS are somewhat limited in ways.

But didn't they say MH370's transponder or whatever either was turned off for malfunctioned around the time it disappeared so that the plane couldn't be tracked?

They found debris though so without a trace is exaggerating it. Obviously not a huge discovery but at least they found something.

It is crazy though. And very sad for those involved. I can't even imagine having a loved one disappear on a plane and never found.

Nothing new to post, but this newly uploaded YouTube video is pretty comprehensive of everything that is known (couple of things I wasn't aware of) and then suggested/theorized:

                        <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n_yR7uz2ftE" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I still remember where I was when somebody told me it "went missing." I sat there wondering how that could be possible, and still kind of do... but man, this is sure some mystery alright.

Seems most likely one of the pilots just went off the deep end. I’ve seen a person go from fine to lost overnight so I know it can happen. The way the flight hooked around and then out to the Indian Ocean suggests that something went wrong in an intentional way. Really seems like a pilot knocked everyone out (maybe himself too), set it and let it run out of gas. I know they said everyone had a pretty clean record but you never truly know someone’s internal struggle until it comes out.

Not being able to find debris besides that one piece is very odd, but at least they found something. With what we know, that’s about the best realistic explanation I could give anyone. Outside that, you’re getting in to paranormal or inexplicable events... I don’t know how much closure that gives anyone since it requires some stretching of what we know. I’m open to it, but I’m not more convinced of it then a pilot losing his mind.
