Off Topic 2015

What did you guys all do for jobs when you were in college? I'm looking for ideas. I can't do Target anymore. It's making me want to die. (Hyperbole, kinda)

I worked for a bank as a teller when I was in high school, so I filled in at the banks around my college when they needed someone to come in for a day here and there.

I thankfully had most of my college paid for by scholarships but the bank gave me spending money and then I still owe a good chunk of change in loans. Will probably take 5-10 years to pay it off.

Edit: I also worked a summer for a company called Summer Discovery where I basically lived in Boston for a month and acted as basically an RA/tour guide for international high schoolers. Really cool experience.

I worked at a childcare center/athletic facility (essentially a YMCA).

Gave me very flexible hours and a job in the summer if I wanted one. I played baseball so I needed an extremely flexible job though. I could work early in the morning before the kids went to school and then again in the afternoon when they were out. Also got time on weekends with some of the other activities the center offered.


Ended up taking a full time job there out of college as an athletic director/child care director/aquatic director because I couldn't find anything else. Best job I ever had but it involved 80 hour work weeks for very little pay and zero room for growth so I left eventually.

Freshman year I worked a USPS/UPS shipping place like The UPS Store, packing boxes and stuff like that. Then I joined the co-op program at Auburn and worked every other semester instead of classes in a real job in my major (like and internship). Good money there, I worked for the power company back home so I could live at home and save the money. I did that for four semesters, so it added a couple years to my college career. The semesters I was back at school I worked at a pharmacy delivering medicine around town and on the cashier at the store. Then my final year in college after I finished the co-op program I worked for a land surveyor because I thought I would enjoy a job outside. It was a good experience but definitely taught me I'm an inside working type of guy.

The co-op program is the way to go if you know what you want to do. Make some money and get some experience. When I graduated I had a real job offer due to my co-op experience which I started the job two days later. Looking back I kind of wish I'd taken a month just to enjoy being done with school, but when you have a job waiting for you, I guess it is good to start right away.

I reffed Rec League and Intramural basketball, among other things, including IM Football, Softball, Volleyball, and youth Flag Football and basketball as well as doing some coaching for youth basketball. Plus I worked at a camp during the summers. Reffing is not tons of money, but it's pretty good pay for the hours I worked and it wasn't a bad gig. Pretty fun, too.

I worked on campus as a tutor and then moved up to graduate assistant when I was getting my master's. Still had plenty of debt which will be paid off here on the 17th this month. Went quicker than most and will be nice to not be sending that money out every month and instead use it as a 2nd mortgage payment or whatever.

Coached some 9th grade basketball and football at a 6th-9th grade middle school. Thought it would be the kids that would irritate me. It was the parents I wanted to strangle.

I got on with a temp agency that put me in a few random short jobs before they found something more permanent and reliable hours wise.

The most memorable random job was to direct foot traffic around a two man crew in a scissor lift painting a building downtown. They were worried about dropping something from 2 & 3 stories up and hitting people below and causing a lawsuit. So they paid me to stand below them and tell people to watch out. Downtown was a block away from campus so it's filled with students and of course people would walk by that I knew. The genius that ran the crew thought it would be a good idea to put me in a suit and tie as I directed foot traffic. All that did was make people think that I was the boss of the operation when I didn't know jack about it at all. I made quite an impression on some ladies from the dorms and also got to bull**** my way through some other conversations like I knew what was going on with the building. That lasted 2 days before they didn't ask me to come back.

The more permanent position they got me on was with Blue Shield sorting and processing paper medical claim forms. A lot of the permanent employees worked a 4-10 work week so the office was open 7 days a week and I could have flexible hours. Occasionally some of the claims would be for breast reduction surgeries and included Polaroid pictures.

I got paid to look at bewbs. I will never complain about that college job.

I got a job doing what I was going to school for, found out I didn't really need a degree to work there, and dropped out.

I've worked in retail since high school, albeit in much better paying retail than I used to be, but I know your pain. AT&T pays well, but the bull**** makes it not worth it. I'm done in two weeks before I start my internship and hopefully get a big boy job at the end of the semester when I graduate.
