Sounds like bad form. I've had that, but I'm more in maintenance mode so I'd just switch to using machines and cables for chest, or going light weight and heavy rep if I do any dumbbells. If there's a trainer around, you may just want to get them to check your form... probably would have more suggestions of what might be going on too.

Yea, I figure it would be tough to answer without watching me, I'll have to ask.

It's just weird because I've done some research and there's lots of stuff about people hurting their shoulder with bad form with the barbell, but not much about dumbbells, and that seems to be my problem.

I'd say it's easier to have bad form with dumbells since both arms are independent. I think the research makes sense bc we tend to throw up more weight with barbells but the bar holds us somewhat in place.. somewhat. If you're throwing up 70+ dumbells it's probably a lot easier to injure a shoulder.

How do you guys feel about planks? I already have a pretty busy workout schedule between running and HIIT, so I was thinking about adding an 8 minute plank workout I found online 3 mornings a week. It includes regular and side planks.

I've never really done them. Do you guys feel they do a solid job of strengthening the core?

I try and do a couple of sets post-run/bike. Big fan of the exercise.

Trying doing this form. Dumbell presses you shouldn't be going that heavy anyway cause you can tear something easily

Planks are great but I find them boring, so I end up throwing them in during normal rest periods. I'd be curious to see the plank workout you found... may be creative enough to keep interest.

                  Honestly, it's probably not .

It's just alternating planks and left/right side planks for 8 minutes. I figure I can do them when I get home from work in the morning.

Yeah that's pretty boring, lol. If you do any other ab/core exercises, I'd just try to mix each variation of planks in there.

Been going at it pretty good and the overall stiff/sore feeling from sports + lifting is making me realize I definitely need to drop these next 15-20 lbs and get to a more manageable weight for my body to handle.
                      Just wait until you're 40!

I was in Japan for ten days, and didn't count calories and put on 8 lbs. Came home this week past week and busted my *** and lost those 8 lbs I put on.

I have been having a blast with Kettlebells. Only negative is I tore a callus on Thursday and had to skip my workout on Friday, (I did 90 Minutes Cardio instead).

Slapped some Neosporin on it most of the weekend I am ready for tomorrow.

Eh, most of my core work is through kettlebells and battle ropes, and none of it is direct core work. That's why I figured I'd just throw in planks to go that extra mile.

I can tell I don't work my core enough anyways, as I start shaking like a mad man after planking for about 45 seconds. For as good of shape as I've gotten myself in compared to a few years ago, I REALLY should focus on my core more .

What kind of KB workouts are you doing? How many KB's do you have? I have a 30-lb. one and would like to add a few more so I can vary my workouts a bit. Cancelled my gym membership as I just wasn't going, so I plan on using KB's a lot for my strength workouts.

In workout-related news, did a nice 15-mile ride on my mountain bike today. People who ride will tell you that the worst thing to run into on a trail isn't rocks or tree limbs/branches/roots, it's sand. Sand just grabs your tires, slows you down and if you're not careful, can throw you from your bike as you washout. I really wish parks wouldn't fill in depressed areas with sand, it doesn't benefit anyone.

I have a 25 and a 35 lb KB. They are the golds gym el cheapo variety. I may get the dragon door KB after taxes.

The workouts I have been doing are extreme kettle bell cardio 1 and 2 by Keith Weber. Weber posted a suggested workout combining the two on his blog and it really get the heart pumping. The ab workout is also spectacular. I finish it off by doing 45 minute on elipitical. I read if you do cardio immediately after weight training it burns fat much faster. This week I'm going to fast 20 hours a day and get all my calories in a four hour window. I tried it a little last week and I really think it helped me lose the 8 lbs.

Unfortunately, that is the norm. I go through long breaks between doing core. That's part of the reason I want to play basketball until my knees fall off (seems to be coming sooner rather than later... just pulled a hamstring. I love 40) is because I do get some lower back work there. It's such a pain in the ***, but once you get into a routine, everything else feels so much better.

Try throwing in a plank in between those exercises. Just do 30 second planks... you'll still feel it and have time left to rest between sets.

No turning back now. Signed up for my first half-marathon next month. Had to take last week off from training due to work travel, but got back into the swing of things this week. Running a 5K this weekend with the wife, which should be fun.
