Tell me OS if you think this is a legit coming collapse

After reading an article today it mapped out what industries have been broken to its knees by the internet. Here are the industries below..

...and with that said, the next coming collapse would be the cable tv industry. Do you think this is a legit concern especially since the popularity of streaming and selective watching on television?

I don't think the cable industry is going to collapse but rather there will be a metamorphosis like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly if they're smart. What they need to do is to quickly embrace the internet and build streaming/cloud based systems with a low enough pricepoint that will be accessible to all while at the same time still using the old system of Cable television as a backup mainly for live event broadcasting and news.

Well, at least that's my opinion.

They do need to embrace it I agree, but are already behind on that because once fiber gets big enough they're going to be left behind.

There are alot and I mean ALOT of good points pointing to how antiquated their way of doing business is right now, and with more people either streaming or leaving the services which for some reason keep going up more and more with less content, how could it sustain the same hold?

You can almost watch any of your favorite shows and sports events live streaming including sunday night football, any nba basketball game and I don't see that just going away.

There is the conflicting thoght of internet data avilability and if the infrastructure is enough at this point.

Cable has nothing to worry about because you still have a lot of areas in the USA that don't have high speed internet. And in the areas that do have high speed internet, you still have a good sized segment of that population who don't have Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix or any season ticket for any sport.

When I think of my own friend group, it is only me and a couple of others who stream anything. The rest either can't stream because they don't have fast enough internet or simply don't have Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. Streaming to me is still a niche market. Once you make it out of the big city markets and get out to small town USA, the number of people who stream is pretty low.

This is the only thing keeping cable going for the next 5 years at least because as much as America is an innovator in a lot of things they're very slow when it comes to the internet. I believe the US is among the worst nations in terms of internet coverage and speed whereas in Europe and Canada we get a LOT more coverage and high speed overall.

I have a few friends who "cut the cord" last year and aside from sports you still have a huge selection from things like Netflix, Hulu and others. The problem is the infrastructure and caps, what 23 mentioned. Netflix had to pay Comcast and others just to get better streaming speeds and there have been articles on how Comcast hates Netflix. Hulu and Netflix(along with other VOD service) are great, but if you keep running into a hard cap in the middle of the month or can't stream in HD, most will keep cable.

Gotmad, I think this is something that is to be considered in the future, whether far or near, it s something they might want to consider.

I agree infrastructure is not up to par yet, but when it does get there, they'll probably need to adjust.

I could even see phone companies investing in this sort of how Verizon has slowly started instead of people going through their cable company for the data.

I work for Cox and I can tell you the future for them is data and security, not cable TV.

Live sports is the only thing that keeps me from getting rid of cable.

I don't know if the Brokerage Industry is going anywhere soon. I believe there are a lot of people, like myself, who prefer to speak/deal face to face with the people managing their financial security. I have tried online brokerage firms and to be honest, I don't like it. I don't feel secure with my money not being somewhere that I can "easily" access it.

Newspaper industry is already dead in my opinion. I stopped taking the paper a few years ago. With the internet and then the ability to print coupons online, there really is no need for newspapers.

I still get the newspaper everyday.

I still pick up a paper here and there and every Sunday for sure. Mostly for the crossword. The Minneapolis Star Trib carries the New York Times puzzle.

I think that one wad talking about travel agencies who got replaced by people finding their own deals on the internet cheaper.

None of those things have been stopped they just get used differently.

Most people don't use landlines or pay phones anymore because their phones are now mobile.

It's already a given papers are not as popular anymore since people can go online or twitter.
I don't think those industries are dead but not what they once we're. Music I think is the most extreme. Napster started something that got rid of most music stores now.

I took a survey the other day asking how much Id pay a month for a subscription to watch sports. Which would include everything you get on cable. I hope we get that option someday.
