In a few weeks, the LaFalce family is going to pay off the entire cable bill and then cancel the cable portion and subscribe to Netflix, Hulu Plus, MLB.tv, etc.

My contract with Dish is up in February. I'm strongly considering not renewing and going with streaming options

Most likely the best way to go.

I would give up cable completely but my wife won't sign off on it.

I would've cancelled cable a long time ago if not for an inability to watch Mariners games without it.

It's his local market, he can't watch them on it.

Just like I can't watch Giants games out here (not that I care, go Brewers.)

So I won't get Yankee games since I'm in New York?

I had that problem when I lived in Delaware (couldn't get Baltimore, Washington, or Philadelphia), but I've had MLB.TV for 2 years here and I get all 6 teams that are usually blacked out. I was surprised.

I'm considering cutting the cord in September when my DirecTV contract is up.

                      1) Get an antenna so I get local channels.
                      2) So far, my FireTV stick has never asked me for a login on WatchESPN so I get all the ESPN channels, but my friend has Comcast and he lets me use it if it ever came to that.
                      3) If the MLB.TV non blackout sticks, for whatever reason, I'd get all the baseball I'd want.
                      4) Already have Netflix and Prime, would add Hulu probably.
                      5) Would probably consider adding League Pass.

Right now, I pay $100 a month for satellite. I'd get it down to around $50 a month for all that, and Netflix and Amazon Prime (I get it for $50/year since I still have my edu e-mail address) I've already been using years. Startup cost would be some more FireTV sticks (I have a Roku but like Amazon over it so far). Would have to do something for a DVR.

Worst case, I do it for a month or two and then DirecTV gives in and gets my bill back to $60 or so like it was the first year and I stick around. Best case, I'm spending half as much as now and use some of the savings to keep adding to the blu ray collection.

                        Highly unlikely.

                            Correct.

Local markets are blacked out. I have mlb.tv for A's games and cannot watch Pirates games with it.

I rid of cable many years ago and never really looked back. The biggest loss was not being able to watch the Pistons, but there are alternate means.

It would seem change is due to come. I'm not sure there's going to be enough to keep people connected to a forced service that essentially makes us pay for much more than we could ever watch (300+ channels). When I visit family who have Xfinity, it's crazy - there's all these channels, yet, everyone still pretty much uses less than 10 altogether.

My irrational fear I haven't thought through though - would it be possible that fragmenting everything down could lead to a boost in individual prices? As in, would Netflix end up costing more? NBATV? So on and so forth?
