You know when ants walk back and forth in a straight line when doing ant things, and they bump into each other when walking opposite directions? I always wondered what that interaction was.
Turns out it is them smelling each other to see if they belong in the same colony, picking up scents that other ants of that colony would have. In other respects, they are sensing what else they have discovered on their route from somewhere. I guess if an ant is of a different colony in the situation, things could go south.
I see a trail of ants now. I think I should seek an ant from elsewhere, pick it up and drop it off on that line, and see how nature takes its course.
