Re: Off Topic 2016: Doe A Deer A Female Deer

I usually DVR and start my sporting events like 45 minutes to an hour after it starts before I start watching. I'd rather skip all of the commercials, injury timeouts, UFC walk-in's, etc. and get straight to the action. If it's like the Super Bowl or something, then I'll watch live, but other than that I prefer the condensed version.

I guess this is where opinions differ, but I have a schedule to work around, plus opportunities made where available. If it was up to me, I would have been at the game... but then again I have finances to consider as well. We all have our priorities, but I would prefer not to be called out on my fandom of a team or sport based on how late I decide to watch a "live" version of the game.

If it means anything, I watched the entire thing live (as I prefer to do, of course).

Successfully watched a DVR'd game without spoilers one time, the US/Algeria World Cup game. Between the stress of avoiding anyone who may talk about it and knowing I could easily check the result whenever, it's not worth it.

In regards to live sports I'm very weird in that if I intend to watch a game I have to watch the very beginning or else I won't watch the game at all. It's just a weird quirk with me. I don't mind the commercials because it allows me to get out of the chair and do other things.

In other news: i'm now addicted to twitter. I blame Donald Trump and the great playoff baseball. I will never tweet when my teams are playing. Gotta have 1000% concentration.

Re: Off Topic 2016: Doe A Deer A Female Deer

I used to record games here and there years ago. And this was before social media. I got tired of trying to avoid everything. Someone slips up and says something or the channel you record it on is in the middle of showing a replay when you first turn the TV on. No ESPN, back when ESPN was actually worth watching for things other than sports. Avoiding internet for the most part.

These days, I watch it live or bust.

Speaking of ESPN I see Michael Smith and Jamele Hill are taking over the 6 PM Sportscenter slot. That's gonna be even MORE opinion on that show now.

I respect that. I'll have times where I will miss 40 minutes of a game while at work, and try to decide whether I'd rather start listening to the game live while in the car for the half-hour it takes me to get home and continue the rest live, or whether it's best that I drive home, listen to some tunes (Alter Bridge ftw!), and then play it from the beginning where I can fast-forward through all commercials.

One thing is for certain, and this might be the case for everyone else around here (since my family simply doesn't understand): once I know the result of something, I can't/won't watch those parts. No need or suspense, no matter how it came to be. I am simply not enthused to watch those parts anymore.

I'm cool with score watching if I'm out and picking up when I can.

                  All 'bout those results.

                  NFL - Buffalo Bills

Sports have significantly less juice when watching recorded.

I'll only do it unless I literally have no other choice.

It really depends. I hate when like... other people know what the result is, and I'm aware of them knowing it.

Put it this way, I also hate knowing whether a game or not has finalized. Let's say I went home last night on MLB.TV five hours after the game has started, and notice that the game is still going on. Either there was a tremendously long rain delay and/or the game is probably going extras, and I know it didn't rain in the area. I can't take that, ya know?

It's not an easy compromise at all, but sometimes I have to do it. Other times I prioritize by doing it. Ah well.

Is it the life I prefer living? Not really. I'd prefer my schedule always worked around the sport. But that doesn't always happen, so I just have to make do.

I just doing think it helps that this discussion started because you were deciding between going to a movie or watching the game.

If you had said all this after saying "I have to work," this conversation would have never occurred. I think we've all been there.

You can't say it's not the life you prefer living though after starting this conversation after saying you were contemplating going to a movie over watching your favorite baseball team.

I still just think that people don't understand I'd still be watching that game. If you don't get the same effect watching the game later knowing absolutely nothing about the outcome (or even whether it's still going on), then I guess that's a "you versus me" thing. I'm able to do it. That's all.

I never meant for this conversation to be about "Movie vs. Giants game." This was "Movie and spending lots of time in traffic and not getting grading done" versus "No movie." Giants game was going to happen one way or the other, even if it was later.

You're good, I just think the question comes down to why not get grading done and then watch the game.

Why would the move even be part of the plan to begin with?

I can grade while watching a game. Good multitasking abilities!

Definitely should have gotten more grading done over the weekend before it, though.

Like I said, pre-screening opportunity. It's free, and I don't get too many of those opportunities. This upcoming weekend will be a bust when it comes to being able to try and watch it. It was the only real window tha tI had.
