Re: Off Topic Episode 2016: The Posts Awaken

Nah, it's not a placebo effect, it's pretty standard in the industry to thank the people that interviewed you for their time, show that you are still interested in continuing forward, and tying that in with your experience and how it relates to the opportunity you are interviewing for.I'm curious...what would you qualify as too much interest? I'm looking for a new/different company to work for so I'd love to know your thoughts as to red flags or conversely, what you appreciate.

Quickly, on the point regarding follow-up emails...I know a few people that have sent follow-up emails after interviews (quick, 2 sentence thank-you note) and they ended up getting the job; granted, it's likely a placebo effect but nonetheless an interesting parallel.

In the old days, they were called thank you letters. You would get out the typewriter, bang out a thank you letter, type the address on the envelope and put a stamp on it.

If you take two people who are equally talented, one sends a thank note and expresses interest, and the other candidate doesn't send a thank note, a person would tend to lean to the person that expressed interest in the job, all qualifications being equal.Last edited by roadman; 03-16-2016, 06:34 AM.Comment

Re: Off Topic Episode 2016: The Posts Awaken

There's no definite science behind it and the one thing I've learned from being on both sides of the interview is that the importance of these things really depends on the person giving the interview. I've had peers who had clung on to little things that candidates did which helped them get a leg up in the evaluation as well as peers who felt like kelis.Nah, it's not a placebo effect, it's pretty standard in the industry to thank the people that interviewed you for their time, show that you are still interested in continuing forward, and tying that in with your experience and how it relates to the opportunity you are interviewing for.

But I'd rather do the thank you note than nothing and the more sincere and less cliche you can sound, the better.[NYK|DAL|VT]

Haha, yeah, I bet. I've only been down to Tallahassee once (for the interview a couple weeks ago... though I've been to FL - mostly the Tampa area - many times), but it seemed nice enough. I'm not looking forward to the Florida heat, but it is what it is. It's a nice medium-sized city, which I think should be nice (a bit smaller than where I live now, but not wholly different).

 The women seem nice. Comment
