Re: Off Topic: The Posts Of Summer

Perusing thru my yard before I mowed today, I see a yellow jackets nest. Fortunately, it can't be more than two weeks old since I last mowed.

    I hate these things.

I recall them getting the belt, didn't realize they got the $10k.

      Nice.

        Nice.

I don't think the amount of training they have to do is worth $10k.

That seems pretty measly for the event. I mean, it's broadcast on ESPN, I'm sure there are plenty of sponsors and guys like Chestnut and Kobayashi have name recognition.

Of course there is more then just one eating contest a year and these guys probably have endorsements with other companies, those prize numbers just surprised me a bit.

Re: Off Topic: The Posts Of Summer

I have something I just need to let out. I've been holding it in way too long. I don't necessarily need advice, and I don't see a better place to post this, so I'll just spill my guts here.

I'm going to be a senior in high school in the fall, which will probably make what I'm about to say seem like pathetic trite, but it's not. I'm in love with this girl. No, it's not one of those schoolyard crushes that everyone has in middle school. This is the real deal. Since the first day of freshman year, I haven't stopped thinking about this girl. However, she has a boyfriend, a pretty close friend of mine and a teammate of mine on the school baseball team. Furthermore, we are pretty good friends in our own right, so the last thing I want to do is screw up the friendship that we have. I've been borderline stalking this girl for a long time. We have the same sense of humor, similar personalities, and were competing back and forth academically all year in the classes we have together for #1 (I won both.... I think ). For those reasons, I value our friendship too much to screw anything up. I just wish one day I could have a shot with her. There was a night, shortly before the end of the school year, when we were going back in forth on Snapchat, and we happened to be talking about future plans and goal for our lives. She mentioned that she wanted to live in Boston, a place I wouldn't mind living in, being a diehard Red Sox fan, and I immediately decided that after college, I would try to move to wherever she lived and hope to rekindle that fire, and maybe go for something more. I feel so pathetic, but my brain keeps telling me that I am crazy for this girl. And I've had to keep all of this to myself for a good 2 years now because it all sounds so crazy, and I don't want to screw up the relationships that I've established. I must sound deranged right now.

I know you said you don't need advice but since you posted this it will garner discussion.

Here's my take coming from a 36 year old who's been there, done that.

It's a little different in my case, but I dated the same girl my last 2 years of high school and for a year in my local branch of college. I was sure she was the one. I loved her so much. Never could see myself with another girl. We broke up when I went to Kent State main campus. It was horrible. I was so depressed. But my best friend came to the same school and everything changed.

I let my self experience college to the fullest extent. It opened up a whole new world for me. I met lots of girls, made lots of friends, and dated plenty of them. I eventually met my wife after college, but I'm glad it didn't work out with my high school sweetheart.

I know you aren't with her now and still feel like you love her. But odds are she doesn't love you back. Sorry to be blunt.

In my opinion, let it go. If she is with a close friend of yours then don't mess that up. It might end up backfiring and she and him might hate you for it.

And you thinking about following her to wherever she goes is a little concerning to me.

Go to college, experience it. You will meet tons of girls. And in all honestly you will forget all about her eventually and be happy you didn't destroy their relationship and possibly yours with them.

Sometimes you just have to know when to fold em.

Now if they break up, then yeah, jump on that.

Off Topic: Señor Millennium - Prepare the Battlefield... For A Masacaaaah

Your post takes me back 10 years. Summer of '06. I had turned 16 months earlier and I was experiencing so much. One of those experiences was the first girl I legitimately had feelings for. I am lucky. It worked out.

So take both this and PVarck's posts with a grain of salt. It's your story to be written.

My unsolicited advice: play it cool. That's your friend's girlfriend and you're also friends with her. Don't step in to that. You could ruin THEIR story. I know it's hard man. But that's a line that should not be crossed. If it's going to happen for you and her, it will, and it shouldn't be forced. You just never know. Life's hilarious like that.

But you also can't wait around forever. I think it's possible to put those feelings on the back burner. Maybe that allows you to let your guard down for some other girl who'll surprise you, or maybe you truly can't let those feelings go. But you've gotta try because hoping for this girl to become available isn't a way to live.

I'm not that far removed from those days, so I know the feeling can be strong and it ain't easy. Even as I was going through the highs and lows of the "talking" phase (I believe adults call it courting, lol), I constantly reminded myself to enjoy the ride. I hadn't had these strong feelings before, so it was all new to me and it was exciting and scary and crazy. But I wanted to savor it and hope for the best. Obviously you're in a different situation but that advice stands.

Re: the moving to wherever she is stuff. That does come off kinda creepy, but I feel you. That's just how much this has affected you, it's real. That's so far down the line though, you're both going to be completely different iterations of yourself. Don't play that hypothetical game right now.

I will say that if she becomes available, and senior year is prime breakup or get together season because of the looming college days, that you should pursue and take your chances with ruining your friendship with her in the event it doesn't work out. I hear this so much and it makes me so mad. If you don't shoot, you can't score. Gotta think it's 50/50 on working out, and then 50/50 on being friends afterwards if it doesn't. Take your chances.

                              Good luck dude.

                              * Also, if she does break up with her boyfriend, run it by your boy. But let him know it ain't really asking for permission, just out of respect. You obviously are in it for the right reasons and you should express that to him.
