This discovery of water on Mars is just amazing. Like one of the biggest discoveries of our time. This has been theorized for decades and now we know. And we also know where there's water there's life. We are discovering organics everywhere. This is an exciting time to be alive.

Just remember, it hasn't been confirmed. One group found evidence, but that is all.

It is an exciting time to be alive, but still I cannot help but to think of all the amazing discoveries our children/grandchildren will get to witness!

It won't be totally confirmed until we see it with our own eyes, but we can see it with radar. So it's about as confirmed as it could be. The discovery has been peer reviewed and it's safe enough to say it's there at this point. They've been working on this particular thing for over a decade and are just now comfortable enough to announce it.

BTW they say the lake is 12.4 miles wide and is about a mile below the ice.

Here are a few more articles about it so you guys can get some more good info on it.

On Earth, where there's water, there's life. Could the same be true on Mars?

It's a shame that NASA's budget is so tight as this kind of news would be perfect to trot out to congress and get funding for a mission to the Martian south pole and perhaps even to physically SEE that water somehow.

I think they are gonna shift around some priorities to get something there relatively soon.

I also see some privately funded companies either trying to go there or helping NASA get there.

                  Today's Fun Fact:

This one is a little different. I guess this is as good a place as any to post this.

So my mom told me about a UFO encounter she had when she was 12-13. She was outside in her back yard and their yard was a huge multi-acre field. This was either 1962 or 63.

She said a saucer shaped metallic silver object flew into their yard about a 100 feet from her and then just hovered above the ground for about 5-10 minutes. It had no windows or rivets. It made no noise and didn't disturb the ground. She said she was just frozen and just starred at it the whole time. Then she said it flew up slowly, still making no noise and then flew off away from her at an impossible speed. She said it flew away so fast it was literally a blur and before she could blink it was gone.

Keep in mind my mom had zero interest in UFO's, or anything alien or even space related. And I know she wouldn't make up such a story.

I don't know what to think of it. I'm open to the possibility we have been visited, but I'm not one of those conspiracy guys who swear by it.

I just think it's very interesting and thought i would share.

I started reading this post and thought that I had wrote it. I've shared the same story that my mom has shared to me many times before:

I'm only telling as much truth as she will tell me, and she'll swear on her life that she saw one and never back down from the statement. Basically, she was a kid in her parents' room one night getting something from their drawer, and she saw, out the window, a hovering aircraft (I forget what she said it looked like... I'll have to ask her again) that made no sound, was lit up, but gave off no light. She was so afraid that she fled, and was afraid to go back into their room at night for a very long time.

So yes, I believe they exist, and that they have been here before.

I'm not bringing this up many times now because it's not essentially the same thread conversation and I don't want to derail it. I have no reason to doubt her. I mention that further in another post and thread when people here kept doubting her story.

Re: The Astronomy and Physics thread. And things of the like.

Wow that's crazy. And yeah, I trust my mom implicitly. I know she would never make something like that up. She never even talked about it for decades.

The thing about it is that it's consistent with UFO reports of that time. Metallic saucer shaped objects. She said it was about as big an SUV.

The parts that intrigue me the most is the fact it made no noise, and flew away so fast.

She said it was literally so fast in a blink it was out of sight. Just crazy.

Hate to be that guy, but I don't buy UFO stories.

Not saying your mothers are lying, but these are stories from when they were kids. I'm critical of my own childhood memories, so when I hear fantastic childhood tales from other people I'm immediately skeptical.

While I do think advanced intelligent life is out there, I don't think they've visited us. Of course I could be wrong, but I remain unconvinced.

Yeah I understand. I don't doubt she saw something but she was a kid, and it could have been any number of things other than an actual UFO with alien occupants.

It's still interesting none the less.

I'll add to the UFO story. I'm a military helicopter pilot...about 10 years ago I was flying off the coast of California at altitude (well, for a helo...we were up at 5,000') and cruising south towards San Diego just south of Los Angeles. All of the sudden our TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) started going off.

Now, the odd thing about that is the range on the TCAS is set out pretty far so you see a target on it well before it becomes a collision threat...when it goes off you already know the traffic is in the area. There had been no traffic on it and now it was going off. I looked at the TCAS screen and saw the object moving at an exceedingly high rate of speed coming up and off the right side of the helicopter. As I looked out, I saw a round, silver disc go past us at an unbelievable speed...I mean...like I have never seen ANYTHING move at this rate of speed. It was by us and gone off the horizon in a matter of seconds.

Both myself and the other pilot just looked at either other in disbelief...but here's the thing; our TCAS system only gets triggered if the other object has a transponder and is transmitting on Mode C. This tells me that it was manmade...I know they test a lot of stuff in that area, so I always have assumed it was something being tested/developed. But I swear...if it hadn't been transmitting, I'd absolutely believe it was something from another world.

That's a good story. It reminds me of the video the CIA released of the fighter jets just off the coast of San Diego who saw what they described as a "fleet" of UFO's travelling at ridiculous speeds.

I know military pilots have seen stuff they can't explain a lot.

My sisters father-in-law is a former military pilot and now a commercial pilot and he's seen a bunch of stuff he can't explain.

I don't know if all this stuff is alien, but there is definitely some sort of phenomenon happening. The CIA admitted they were investigating UFO's up to 2012. And someone who worked on the project says they still are.

Oh, I meant to say something about it transmitting. That's interesting because most of these sightings like this don't mention if the object is transmitting.

Did you ask if it was being picked up by ground radar?

Did anyone get to see Mars tonight? It was at it's closest point to Earth in 15 years.

It was beautiful. Just a huge red ball of light in the southern sky.
