Re: The Astronomy and Physics thread. And things of the like.

I think its very important to explore the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. We need to get to Titan again, Europa, and probably most importantly Enceladus. We know there is liquid water there, and we know there are hydrocarbons on Titan.
If we can find any sort of life on those moons it will blow everything we know about life out of the water and open pandora's box on life in the universe.

Show them the link I posted which pretty much proves the Earth is round.

If the Earth was flat don't you think someone would have fallen off the edge by now?

Well, space-time is curved so if you walk off a point on 1 edge, you immediately walk onto the point exactly opposite it.
                      Spoiler

Seriously though, the idea that humanity as a whole once believed the Earth to be flat is a misconception. Even the ancient Greeks knew the Earth was round and some there philosophers even tried to calculate its circumference. It is actually easy to observe that the Earth is round simply by watching an object coming or going over the horizon. For an object approaching over the horizon you see the top of it first and for an object receding over the horizon the top will be the last part visible. If the Earth was flat, the whole object would appear or disappear at the same time. The actual debate was over the size of the Earth. The prevailing belief before Columbus's voyage was that the Earth was small and that Eurasia and Africa were all the land that existed while a few including Columbus believed the Earth was large and there were as yet undiscovered landmasses across the Ocean

This doesn't make sense. If you get to eye-level of a flat surface and raise/lower something on the other edge, it doesn't appear/disappear all at once. Why would a flat Earth work that way?

EDIT: Never mind, I understand now. You're talking about something on the surface of Earth (not the Sun/Moon).

I know Burgh, that comment was pretty much tongue in cheek.

You would also start walking up hill as you approached the edge.

I just figured since you're dealing with someone who disagrees with science and math that they'd simply reject the facts.

The best explanation IMO is the time zones. Easiest to understand and relate to.

Aliens? I don't even know. I'll leave the door open for any possibility. So much happens that we can't explain on Earth as it is.

A physics thing I read a couple months back was that the law of motion was broken. It was to a the tiniest degree, but an object or something provided itself with thrust without anything else acting on it. Something along those lines.

Like I said, I'm pretty open to literally anything possible happening defying all we know or can explain. I mean, we got here on a once in forever chance... I think it's our supposed intelligence that limits our scope of thought or theory. And our inherent self-centeredness.

                                What an excellent topic!
Personally i think us as humans are always contradictory in our thinking. I beleive there are other forms of "life" just because of the sheer fact of planets/galaxies/possibilities. I do not believe for one second though that we are beng visited by them. To do so, i think we are taking that same human like ideas and applying it to other forms of life all while saying that there can be other types of life that arent carbon based or exist outside of our own goldilocks zone.

Why are we all so sure that other forms of life would also follow the same hman based ideology to explore and navigate space? The concept of looking for resources, expanding, space travel, etc is a very human based ideology. Maybe there are other forms of life out there but to me there is no natural progression that other forms of life mean thry automatically are space exploring once they reach an intelligent level.
