Re: The Astronomy and Physics thread. And things of the like.
NASA’s Kepler mission has verified 1,284 new planets – the single largest finding of planets to date.
I didn't catch the whole thing, but if anyone did, did they say anything about how many of the newly discovered planets are potentially habitable?Last edited by PVarck31; 05-10-2016, 02:25 PM.Comment

In the newly-validated batch of planets, nearly 550 could be rocky planets like Earth, based on their size. Nine of these orbit in their sun's habitable zone, which is the distance from a star where orbiting planets can have surface temperatures that allow liquid water to pool. With the addition of these nine, 21 exoplanets now are known to be members of this exclusive group.Comment

Thanks. 9 isn't bad. I can only imagine what could be lurking on those planets. I think of crazy colored sky's, beautiful flora. I just wish I could be alive for when we finally get to one of these places.Comment

Re: The Astronomy and Physics thread. And things of the like.
So I have no idea what I just saw. I just took my dog out and I always look at the sky basically the whole time I'm out there and I looked west and saw what I thought was a star through the top of the trees. It looked just like a star. Kinda bright. Then it looked like it was moving but I thought na, it must just be me, so I knelt down to get a better look through the trees and sure enough is was moving north slowly.
Then the crazy thing happened. A bright piece of something shot off of it and went to the right and disappeared and almost immediately after another piece shot off to the south. Then the whole thing disappeared.
I'm thinking it had to be a meteor and then broke up in the atmosphere, but it was a strange sight for sure.Comment

Re: The Astronomy and Physics thread. And things of the like.
Sounds like a meteorite, but typically wouldn't have as much of a duration to be observable for as long as your post makes it sounds like.
When I read it initially it sounded like a military aircraft plane firing off a flare each direction, not sure why it would disappear after though.
I'm sure there's lots of other exotic stuff it could be, interesting report though!
Unrelated, here's a really cool shot taken by STEREO-A of Mars and Saturn flanking Earth - https://twitter.com/SungrazerComets/...20913729867776Comment
