Re: Off Topic 2017: Sports & Halloween

Finally some kind of positive news relating to me at a job. Just finished a quick phone interview with a general recruiter for a company. It's a step down from what I want/need, but at least it's something. Would be nice if I could even use it as a stepping stone in the future.

One thing that sucks though is that so many times it seems like they ask for weekend availability. I know this an increasing trend, but I like the traditional Monday-Friday 9-5 type stuff. In the past for other interviews I said I'd prefer not weekends(I obviously didn't get the job), but now I'm at least mentioning occasionally working weekends to meet them halfway. It's not a requirement of the job to work weekends(based on the job listings). That should be a rule about job postings instead of them springing that news on someone during interview itself.

Working weekends actually isn’t that bad. But that also depends on which day/night you prefer to have free.

Working in IT, it’s damn near mandatory but as long as I have my Saturday Nights/Sundays them I’m good.

For me it's more about "social/family life" in this case. If I work Saturday and/or Sunday, not only am I working when everyone I know is off, but when I'm off, there's nothing to do since everyone I know is working.

As a football fan I HATED having to work Saturday and Sunday. As a broke individual delivering pizzas, I loved working weekend nights.

I throw up a thank you about not working weekends anymore every time I go to a restaurant/bar or the store during the weekend.

Yea, when you don't have a job you don't really get to decide what days you work.

Just had my eight year anniversary with the company I work for last month. When I first started, I was unemployed, broke, had to move across the state to live here with my brother who had just graduated college and was thankful to have to start out working a permanent Saturday.

Now, as a manager I still have to work an occasional Saturday (once every 11 weeks) but I was happy to get any job regardless of the day's I had to work when I started.

Ha, I'm still the one that always volunteers to work Black Friday when everyone takes it off because it gives me an excuse to get out of Thanksgiving festivities early.

I should also mention that we have DirecTV at our job and where we sit at. And weekends are pretty much slow unless our inbox starts blowing up, which is never.

So basically on Saturdays, I'm just trying to kill time since there's not much going on and just watching Football, Soccer or whatever is on. One of the pros about working in IT and being a contractor. During the week though, they pretty much keep it on the News especially during the day.

Okay, am I the only person who can't see this thread beyond a truncated portion of the first post?

                    https://forums.operationsports.com/f...omparison.html

I've tried multiple computers, browsers, OS username logins, skins, etc. and I can't seem to access the rest of it. I'm only even able to post in it because I can access the Post Reply button, but that's about it. That being said, I now realize that in hitting the Post Reply button, I can actually scroll underneath the text body to see the thread's posting history, but that's still a bit cumbersome.

Oh, and the "multiple OS username logins" part was a joke.

For me it's not so much working weekends or not, but I really enjoy having the freedom to mostly set my own schedule. Working in academia/teaching, aside from actual contact hours with students--which is only a portion of the workload and somewhat beyond my control--being able to keep late mornings (have always disliked early mornings going back to grade school), go home in the middle of the day for lunch or to take the dog out, grade papers with a baseball/college football game on in the background, or get some pre-work done on a Sunday evening is great. I'm incredibly protective of my free/leisure time so I've always appreciated the perks that flexible scheduling affords me and that was always one of the things that attracted me to this line of work. The last time I worked a true 9-5 M-F was probably 10-15 years ago.

                              Yep.

When we interview, we always ask about working on weekends.

If they are unwilling to work weekends, the resume is thrown out.

If you want a job, you need to agree to do whatever it takes.
