      Re: 2017 Fitness Challenge

I felt a tweak yesterday afternoon in my right lower calf/ankle area running in place. I immediately went over to a treadmill to walk it off. I took Ibuprofen, stretched out the calf and took a warm bath.

Feels a bit better today, we will see how it goes today at the gym.

Achilles area? I'd say be careful how you handle that if so.

          Re: 2017 Fitness Challenge

I'm back at it again this year, just like every year. I started last Tuesday weighing in at 223. And after playing basketball four times and eating right all week, I was down to 219 yesterday.

My problem is I'll stick to dieting for a few months, then go back to old habits or let the holidays get me off track. Take last year, for example, I started off at 232 and got down to 208 by mid-summer. I got sick with the flu at the end of July, then the flood came (along with in-laws living with us for about six weeks), then football season and before I knew it I was back up to 219. I got focused again in late September and lost 7-8 pounds only to gain the back during the holiday and like I said started the year at 223. It's been the same for the last few years, basically since I started working in an office in 2009. The highest I've weighed since then is probably 235ish and the lowest is 196. I'd like to get down to around that again.

It seems like I'm always losing the same 15-20 pounds every year hopefully, this is the year I finally stop doing the yo-yo thing and stick with a full on lifestyle change instead. I know what to do, it's just a matter of sticking to it.

I should have taken your advice.

I skipped the gym yesterday, but went in today.

I wish finishing my workout on the treadmill and I felt another tweak.

Time to rest and heal that area.

Yeah, I had some achilles issues last year, probably stemming from working my legs too hard. I had ramped up on calf raises plus was doing cardio daily plus was playing basketball twice a week. I was thinking it was either torn worst case or tendinitis that was setting in.

I cut out any high impact work and basketball for a few weeks and focused on my calf area. I can't emphasize this enough, GET A FOAM ROLLER. Use it on your calf to see if that helps alleviate the pain. I also wrapped up my ankle with KT tape (that stuff James Harden and them wear) per a trainer friend's suggestion and that seemed to do the trick.

The images of Kobe dragging his foot off the court and post-game interview with his eyes bloodshot are seared into my mind.

Be proud, you are down 11 lbs from last year. If you can have the same success this year and the next, you will be down to 201 to start 2019!

Man, thanks for bringing up the foam roller, I have one and forgot all about it. I'll try the tape too.

All good suggestions guys, thanks a million!

I did the Strong Lifts program for a while. Good program for putting on some bulk and increasing your strength. I started having some trouble with my knee and instead of squatting did leg presses.

As for me, my wife got me DDP Yoga a couple Christmases ago. I was doing and it definitely helped with the every day aches and pains. It is a good workout that always had me sweating. I need to get back to doing the yoga.

I partially tore my left Achilles tendon last year and had to have surgery. My doctor told my no treadmill, no squats or movements that will put extra strain on the Achilles. He takes the conservative approach.

Getting older I am going to focus on the yoga, calisthenics and fixing my horrible diet. Don't need to be huge just more healthy.

Just don't follow somebody around, you might send a mixed message.

Depends on what you're working on, I guess. Do I know what I'm doing in a gym? Not really, because I don't really go to the gym. I don't do weights, ever. Not boasting about that at all, like you I'd have no idea what you're doing. I can imagine though the people who are there have a plan and are sticking to those reps. Maybe they even have it on their phone. Many websites (as well as YouTube) can likely provide you exactly what you need should the equipment be there for you.

Like me and my 100-pushup goal (currently back at 50 like I used to be, yay), the program gives me an exact number of pushups to do, the amount of rest in between reps, and how many days to rest, etc. I imagine I can/should be doing some other exercises on the non-pushup days, especially since the exercise is like ten minutes long (not worthy of going to a gym for when I can do it at home), but I'm doing that one for now until I deem another goal worthy of what I feel comfortable doing.

I really need an exercise bike, though. I can't do too many things cardio-wise that involve any sort of running because it makes my head jolt (damn brain damage, hope it's not permanent), but I gotta buy one of those suckers at home to start getting some other exercises in, especially with my legs. In some cases I am trying to build muscle, but in this case I'm just trying to be active and healthy.

Anyway, find a program through a website that you think you want to try and tackle, and have it on your phone with you as you maneuver through the gym. If you're just starting up on things, just stick to that program and don't try and do too much. Your first session might only be twenty minutes long; it'll take time before you build the stamina to tackle the longer reps, I suppose.

I have some friends online who swear that guys should get on some sort of strength program, doing squats and stuff...No clue how to start that, but the actual lifting of that is better than pissing away time on machines that don't do a lot.

I'm a Strong Lifts OG now, let me now if you have any questions. I started running Strong Lifts in the summer of 2015 and ran the program for about a year before switching to an intermediate program. Trust me, it will be kicking your butt soon!

In December I got sick of waiting for the power rack at my gym and decided to start investing in a home gym in my basement. Bought a Rep Fitness short power rack for under $300 bucks once I found out their retail location was near my home (8 miles away). Then I picked up some weights from someone on Craigslist. We already had a nice elliptical and some kettle bells. I need to take a picture of my setup later.

Currently running Texas Method here are my stats @ 1 set 5 RM

Squat: 345 (Got 350 two reps last workout)
Dead: 370 (Seems like it should be better)
                                Bench: 225 (Stalled big time)
OHP: 142 1/2 (Had to switch to seated because my low basement ceilings)

                                Height 5-9
                                Weight 196

Just realized on Texas I'm not running rows at all anymore, this might be why I'm stalling on deads a bit. Trying to cut down to 175 now, started the year at a whooping 206 my biggest ever by far. Time to cut.

Find a proven plan that meets your goals and you will enjoy. Stick to it like glue for awhile. 95% of folks in the gym have no clue what they are doing, don't follow or emulate. Don't make the mistake of randomly making a routine which is what I always failed at in the past. Start light and work up slowly.

Strong Lifts or Starting Strength unless you want a body building program.
