You shouldn't lie if it is a lie that's too big for you, or makes you feel uncomfortable. I once said during an interview I was still working at the last place, where I wasn't working anymore at that point. The lady who interviewed me immediately mentioned the name of one of the top sales guys there, which I knew very well.... Not sure how I reacted physically when it happened, but I tried to play it cool. I didn't get the job, so it could be because of that or another reason. It wasn't the best interview anyway.

Like others have said, I never include months on my resume, that's TMI as far as I'm concerned. I even took months off of my LinkedIn account, though I was able to make it look decent.

You need to realize, that sometimes you can be the most dedicated employee and the best fit for the position, but no one would learn that because they may reject you for silly reasons, which you could "take care of" without much lying.

For the cover letter, I'd try to keep it to one page (two at most). Make sure to properly and specifically address the person doing the hiring (you can usually find this info pretty easily from the job posting).

My fonts are all the same. Formatting on it all is fine.

The cover letter part I always get confused by is how to start it. Most times I don't know the name of the person. Do you just say "dear hiring manager"? "To whom it may concern"?

Another thing I have in it is an address part. Above the opening of the letter, it'd have the company name, address, city. Is that necessary?

You should try to find out who the actual person is for the address. A lot of the time that info is right in the job posting itself. Sometimes you can do your own research by looking up a company/school/organization and its organizational chart on the internet. You can address it generically, but that's only if you can't figure out who the right person is.

You also want to include the date, person's name/title and address info, and your contact info in the heading. Like with resumes, there are examples of cover letters online you can follow here. It eats up a lot of space and seems trivial, but you come off like you know what you're doing. Remember, you have to play the "game."

With the resume, I wouldn't use all the same font for everything. Most designs look best with a sans serif font (like Arial or similar) for your headings/top level items. The body text/bullet points usually go best with a serif font (like Times New Roman or similar). A good combination can make it easier to read and help accentuate how you've organized the document. Remember that you only have something crazy like 7 seconds (I think there are stats on this) to get your point across before the hiring manager moves onto the next one in the pile.

I'd agree with this. I've always carefully read cover letters for the hiring committees I've been on. I feel like I can figure out a lot of things from reading someone's cover letter. Can the candidate write/communicate like an adult/educated person? Form an argument? Be persuasive? Summarize? Seem excited about working here? Is there a telltale sign they've been applying to every Tom, Dick, and Harry? (I've seen cover letters addressed to the wrong institution before...or a piece of text that wasn't changed when the address was). Does the candidate misuse your/you're (gross)? In fact, I'd say I probably over-interpret a cover letter if anything.

Then again, some others on the same committees take the opposite extreme and don't seem to put quite the same emphasis on looking the application materials over. Or they read very selectively for certain criteria.

Same reason golf course hot dogs taste better. We're having so much more fun and enjoyment with everything else around us that we aren't even thinking or worrying about the hotdog.

Wolf spiders have a somewhat similar stripe, but I'm not sure if that's what it is.
