re: Off-Topic
Want to vent about job search experiences.
SpoilerApplied for a position with a nearby, but out of state city in the planning department. The very next day on my lunch break I get a call from the director wanting to set up an interview. Those of you familiar with government jobs knows that is not typical.
The posting was full time with pay depending on qualifications.
I arrive for the interview and this guy does not follow any guidelines whatsoever. 90% of the time he was just chatting about the job, as if I already had it. He said based on my resume and phone conversation I was exactly the candidate he was looking for so I left feeling pretty damn good.I was told to expect to hear something by the end of that week. Pay was discussed.
Well I didn't, so the following Wednesday I sent a follow up email. Shortly after I get an email offering me the position, only it was now part time (no benefits)with a lower than discussed pay.
Not thrilled about this but my current situation dictates that I take the position, so I replied back. I then get an email asking me to come in for a 2nd interview. Okay now I'm really confused. But I show up and its more of the same, its not an interview. He shows me around, shows my office, talks about the city's plans, etc. Asks me when can I start and we do paperwork for the background check.
That was going on 3 weeks ago and haven't heard since. The posting is no longer listed on the city website, but the staff directory is not updated either.
Local government is notorious for dragging their feet, but damn this has been amateur hour. The silent treatment is acceptable when they first get a application and disqualify the person immediately, but once you get this far in the process there needs to be communication.
That honestly sounds like it's going to be a crap place to work. When no one communicates, it's usually a red flag. Expect a bunch of people blaming other people when things go wrong to make things go even slower.Comment

There’s a zero percent chance this happens anytime soon. Adding 2 senators and 1 or so representatives is a big deal in the current political climate.

Have you brought up to the guy that this whole thing has changed and it's not at all the job you originally discussed? I mean, I'm sure you have, but it's worth hearing an explanation for why the process has been a cluster-f* since the start.Want to vent about job search experiences.

Perhaps. But crushing debt and massive unfunded liabilities leaving them on the brink of financial collapse are good ones.Comment

There aren't really any other people lol. Maybe that is another red flag, but I was told they are rebuilding the planning department. In between the 1st and 2nd interview they hired an office assistant, and that is pretty much the complete roster. The director, my position (code enforcement officer/planner 1) and an admin.
From what I gather, the mayor and council are the primary culprits so to speak. The current director is carrying too much of a load right now. He is so busy putting out brush fires that he cannot actually, well, plan lol. So he wants to expand the department, and since he doesn't plan on being there for more than a couple years, he wants to groom a replacement. The mayor is not interested in paying for that and doesn't want to devote another full time salaried employee to this department.
Its why I prefer the town manager form of government.

I don't get how a toy store phases out. It's not like parents aren't having children anymore. Everyone switch to iPads now? Everything ordered on Amazon maybe?
It's just sad that the days of browsing those colorful warehouses is all gone. Does the newest iPhone still not have a headphone jack? If not, does it come with the wireless earphones?
I can't stand Apple. My 128 GB iPod Touch is on its last legs and I'm trying to figure out what to do. To replace it would cost me $300 so I figured for that much I might as well look at the iPhone, but if they still hate their customers and have no headphone jack or come with headphones, I'll be screwed on that.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

My guess is maybe parents are just smarter shoppers? Buy kids what you want at a good price. Not "here's a toy store, pick out any toy you want" mentality. Doesn't matter if it comes from toys r us, Walmart, a small mall store or so on. A toys a toy and kids will get bored of toys fast.I don't get how a toy store phases out. Weirdly enough, I've rarely been to toysrus in my life. Maybe once a year at most for Christmas time when buying gifts for peoples kids. As a kid, I never really went there.Comment
