    Re: Off-Topic

I have packaged guacamole that has yet to be opened and is sitting in the back of my fridge (where some items seem to freeze when touching the wall, but this has kept its unfrozen form). It expired about a month ago, but it is still green as the day I bought it.

Must it show discoloration to exemplify it is past expiration and shouldn't be consumed, or could green guacamole still be a no-no?

It's fine. Dates are generally for quality or best taste/freshness. The only firm food dating is baby food/formula as the nutrients can break down. Even dairy is good, unopened, for a couple weeks after the date and kept at temp.

I've run food programs for various non-profits and we cycled our deli, dairy, and perishable items after a week in order to accommodate the influx of donated product from grocers. If it wasn't coming in regularly a lot of the salsas, hummus, guacamoles, etc. would have been fine well past the printed date.

Non-perishables last even longer, two years or more for non-acidic canned goods and a year for acidic ones (e.g. tomatoes). We made rules for a year and six months respectively to make volunteers comfortable and to curb pantry dumping by donors.

All that being said, our senses have evolved to detect spoiled and unsafe food. If it looks off, smells bad, or has an unnaturally acidic/metallic/sharp taste...avoid it.

"Best before" dates on many things like mentioned is the BEST before date, its still good after but if it isnt, the company isnt at fault.

But at the same time, doesn't mean things won't go bad before that date if you open it. Whether it be milk, cereal, or anything for that matter.

Some people take that date so literal though. Something could say Best Before June 28. On June 29 they throw it out. It could still be good and most times it is.

I can vouch for this. A couple months ago I was making a cup of coffee and had milk that was on its expiration date. It was the only milk I had and smelled just a little off but I figured I was only using a little bit so even if it was borderline it’d be fine.

Right. This is 33 days later, and already doesn’t have an everlasting shelf-life as is. Websites are saying 1-2 weeks after date may be fine, but never mentioned what occurs or what I should be seeing, symptomatically-speaking. That’s why I’m asking here if I can maybe diagnose it for myself.

I was just asking if something could be expired without exhibiting visual symptoms. Take milk, for example.

                  Re: Off-Topic

Dairy products and produce are the main things I'd listen to those expiry dates a bit stricter.

Although in some cases, I'd still say a dairy product could be good a few days after the export date if it wasn't opened beforehand.

And going Off-Off-Topic. Today was the first time ever I've recieved a free sample from Amazon. I never knew this was a thing, and I wonder how often I could get free samples on anything. I've been a prime subscriber for over 2 years now.

Bottom line is if it tastes off its bad. If it tastes fine it's good.

milk is tricky though, the rim always has crusties and it pretty much always smells bad

Nah, this was a different kind of smell, haha. I was just an idiot.

What happened was I added it to my coffee as usual, then caught a whiff from the carton as I was putting it back in the fridge. That's when I checked the date. I took a sip of the coffee to test and it was totally fine so I went ahead and drank the rest.

There were several steps in the process where I could've pulled the plug on this idea. My stomach regret the error.

The only time I smell milk is to check if it’s gone bad, and then I question myself if milk always smells kinda nasty or if it’s gone sour. I think its usually overly obvious it’s bad if it’s bad.

                          How about slimey lunch meat?

Honestly, once I get it in my head that a food is potentially expired, or right on the edge, I can’t enjoy it the same.

I was in the dentist this morning getting my braces adjusted and Shania's "That Don't Impress Me Much" was playing. It's crazy to think Brad Pitt was a measuring stick of cool back in 1997 and still is today.
