    Agree.

I'm not trying to infer anything other than the origin of the Coronavirus, there are also a lot of Asian students within the population.

I know I'd rather have this than Ebola. Then I could understand the panic.

Ironically it would actually be useful to have that happen, as long as the students stayed on campus, and older people were not allowed in. They would all get infected, have minimal to zero symptoms, recover, and then become immune and unable to spread to anyone else at a later time. But that doesn't exactly pass the ethics test, I suppose lol.

I would hope no one would compare the two. One has a 2% mortality rate, with near 0% under age 60, and the other had 25-90% people dying.

NCAA just confirmed the Men's and Women's tournaments will be held without fans.

This will be a huge financial impact to the areas where the tournaments are being held. I know many of these cities rely on the boost that these tournaments bring to their areas.

Also will be interesting to see how teams play with almost no one in the stands, other than close family members.

If you're only focusing on the baseline mortality rate for coronavirus (~2%), you're ignoring the bigger threat of the mass wave of COVID-19 hospitalizations that might occur throughout the US that will clog the medical system. Every ICU bed and respirator that a coronavirus patient is using is one less for everyone else.

...this is already happening in Italy, FWIW.

I'm posting this from one of WI's House's of Representatives as to where the Federal government is coming from:

This afternoon participated in a 1-hour teleconference update with Senior Trump Administration officials for an update including hundreds of state officials addressing the coronavirus issue. The overarching themes were this: 1) This situation requires a non-partisan, whole team approach. Businesses, church leaders, community organizations, and schools all need to help with mitigating the spread of this disease. 2) While the overall risk remains low to the general population, the trouble with this diagnosis is that the rapid spread has the potential to overwhelm the system. Slowing the spread is something every citizen can help facilitate. 3) Those most at risk for severe disease remain individuals over age 60 and people of any age with a chronic diagnosis that makes them immune compromised in any way (diabetes, HIV, heart, kidney, or lung disease, & others). The best starting point for accurate information is coronavirus.gov. Should you encounter any roadblocks in regards to COVID-19, please feel free to contact my office so that we can refer you to the proper department for assistance.

And that's what this social distancing thing is all about. Slowing the infection rate for older people. It's not about people in their 20s-30s panicking and stocking up on bleach and paper towels at Target because of ignorance.

Right. I'm just a little annoyed at some of the downplaying I've been seeing from some people: "Only old people really have to worry!" Leaving aside the fact that quite a lot of us have loved ones who are older (over 50 million Americans are 65+), there are downstream effects on wider public health that people should also be concerned about.

Several districts in CT have closed schools now for the rest of this week, and one closed for the next 2 weeks because of either a confirmed case in town, or possible cases within the school.

I teach in a small rural corner of the state, not an area with people taking the train in and out of nyc every day, so I'm hoping we'll be ok but not looking good. We were told about 2 weeks ago to start preparing online lessons and activities for the kids to do

True true. It's the difference between a healthy level of caution and fear. I think a lot of people are reacting to the sensationalism they see in the media, and on social media. A lot of people don't educate themselves beyond headlines and 1 minute videos.

And now we know the Coronavirus is not immune to people in their 30's with no underlying conditions:

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed the state's third coronavirus case Tuesday.

According to officials, the person is an Anoka County resident in their 30s who was likely exposed through contact with international travelers. The patient is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Officials said the patient does not have any "glaringly apparent" underlying health conditions.

The patient developed symptoms Feb. 28 and sought medical help on March 3. They were evaluated and released because that's what their symptoms called for at the time. Then the patient sought care on March 9, and samples were collected and sent to the MDH Public Health Laboratory for testing. The test was found positive earlier Tuesday. MDH is awaiting confirmatory testing from CDC, but health officials consider the presumptive results actionable.

I'm sure the rates are still much much lower for young adults vs older adults.

In my younger days (late 20's early 30's) I would have been incensed if they had canceled MardiGras (FatCity version-not New Orleans) because of this.

Several years later my thinking has changed.

I was thinking something along these lines as an explanation of how it's spreading so fast. Younger people getting infected but have either not symptoms or symptoms so minor that they hardly think about it yet they are contagious and spread it around not even realizing they have it.

Pitt, Duquesne, and a number of other local colleges have gone to online only classes for the weekend. Pitt students (who are on spring break this week) were told to stay home if they have that option and spring break has been extended another week to allow faculty to prepare for the switch to online only.
