From a father to his son(Gov of NY)

If it’s public health versus the economy, the only choice is public health. You cannot put a value on human life.

You do the right thing. That’s what Pop taught us @ChrisCuomo

And everyone's opinion will vary, just shows you it's up to our state governments, I believe.

It's depressing to me that even needs to be said, but we've always put a value on human life so not at all surprising.

*whispers the economy might as well be public health

If this thing drags on for months on end, then people who have been laid off are going to lose their insurance (ie health). People are going to lose their homes and no telling what else. The U.S. is already known for its high suicide rate and people without jobs, no real income (even if a stimulus would help but isn' a longterm answer), then people's mental health is only going to get worse and worse as long as this drags on.

At some point (I'm not saying next week but in the not so distant future) people are going to have to get back to their normal lives. I'm sure things like social distancing, especially for older and at-risk folks, will still have to be practiced for much longer just to be as safe. However, once this curve gets bent, then things need to start slowly revving back up.

Definitely, but before we do that we need to address the actual problem and the whole purpose of all these precautions and ramp up production of medical supplies, try to find as much qualified help as possible, and start transforming suitable buildings for field hospitals. Or else we're going to be right back at the starting point.

So what is the actual death rate in the United States? I'm hearing conflicting info.

Every state/locality will have its say in when things open back up, the same way each area decided on when/how to shut down. It's not one guy deciding. And not every state is NY. 70 of the 100 deaths in the US from CV yesterday were in NY/NJ.

And most of us know it's a election year.(yes, Capt Obvious lol)

And more fodder from the Gov of NY:

We are not willing to sacrifice 1-2% of New Yorkers.

                          That’s not who we are.

We will fight to save every life we can.

                          I am not giving up.

And this is why I mentioned each state will respond differently.

All you can do is take the numbers what we have now. Yesterday, in the US, I think it was 1.2% or thereabouts.

                            Currently, rounded up to 1.3%.

I'm assuming, when it's all said and done, once we flatten the curve up to the top of the charts going downward, the death rate would lower in theory.

Right now in NY it's 0.8%, and overall in the USA it's 1.3%. NY has done the most testing by far, so you'd have to lean towards their number being closer to accurate. The more tests they do in the coming weeks and months will get a more accurate number.
