I guess it’s a good thing my family already takes vitamin D as it’s pretty much a requirement living this far north.

Likely an outcome of hospital avoidance fed by Covid fear. People with other, more dangerous problems don't leave the house because they're being told the plague will get them, so they suffer consequences that were aviodable. We're not going to classify those as covid deaths tho. That's not how that works.

          They’re protesting just to protest.

I honestly wouldn’t even classify this as a protest. This is just entitled people crying about having some toys to play with instead of all their toys.

Doesn't exercising on the sidewalk kill their argument for why they want to open the gyms?

I wouldn't say it kills the argument but it's a pretty dumb way to go about trying to allow it to open back up.

Gym's can still go out of business though without patronage (especially individually owned gyms) and a lot of customers are very loyal to their gym so these protests aren't any different that any other protests we've seen.

(Not saying I agree with them but I don't agree with the notion that protesting a gym being closed is any different than others who are out of work protesting to get back)

Agreed. My thoughts were that this was a group of gym members. If this group were of gym owners (maybe it was, I admit I didn't look into it) I would understand 100% - they obviously are the most effected by the gyms being shut down right now.

Honestly, it’s exactly how that works. That’s why flattening the curve was the first goal, to avoid swamping medical facilities. New York City failed to do that.

Regardless, I’m not sure you have anything to back up your claim. I’ve seen countless stories from chariots health workers and relatives of victims to realize a ton of Covid deaths were not reported.

Lookup the reports of people with VDI and without. Some doctors haven't had to hospitalize anyone that didn't have VDI. There are a bunch of studies coming out right now about vitamin D deficiency. They know it already helps with respiratory illnesses and it appears to be that it helps with the severity of coronavirus. If you are at 40ng/mL, some doctors say it won't affect you much. It's from all around the world, so it most likely is a way to help prevent or get over it quickly, similar to vitamin C for the flu.

                          Hi, ER Doc here.

We STILL do NOT have enough COVID tests for our symptomatic patients let alone to test everyone who wants one.

Back up which claim? That people are avoiding hospitals and that's leading to avoidable deaths? That seems hard to refute. Health.nyc.gov has stats up showing how few people are going to hospitals for symptoms of asthma, nausea, diarrhea, etc compared to previous years. And people are straight up ignoring symptoms of heart/stroke related problems.

Globally, cardiologists are seeing VSDs, papillary ruptures, and other complications rarely seen in the primary PCI era.

Is fear of the coronavirus causing ER avoidance? Data indicates an alarming drop in cardiovascular emergency cases, and doctors say some patients waited too long and had brain damage or even died.

A 54-year-old man recently arrived at a Scripps hospital in respiratory distress and died after physicians were unable to break up the massive blood clot in his lungs. His emergency team quickly lea…

And no, you don't get to count deaths as a result of hospital avoidance the same as people who tested positive for covid and were on ventilators. Why anyone would want to that I don't know. The idea is to count people who actually died from the actual virus, not to count victims of the hysteria created by people who for whatever reason wanted this to be a Charlton Heston movie from the 1970s.

I mean, I've also heard 20 million tests per week are needed. Your numbers of 152/100k would be only 3.5M weekly (assuming you mean 152 tests per 100k per day). What we've seen throughout this whole process is that our experts' best efforts/models have been, at best, very crude estimates. Problem is that no one knows for sure and some studies, even coming out of the same place, vary wildly within their estimates within just a couple of weeks. This uncertainty goes back to early health recommendations being very wishy washy about wearing masks/not wearing masks.

As a scientist, it makes sense for there to be jumpiness in the models as the variables keep changing. But, it also illustrates these very black-and-white declarative "mic drop" statements about X tests per day/week/month are really just only wild guesses. Wild guesses with good intentions maybe. One thing people are naturally poor at is interpreting uncertainty/probability/levels of significance.

As a layperson, I could see people just tuning out from these ever-changing forecasts, almost like they trust a meteorologist to have little idea of what next week's weather will be like. In some ways, forecasting a complex system reasonably far into the future is a similar problem.

And for the record, I think both extremes in this debate are probably wrong. Some people are way too cavalier and others are way too fear monger-y. But, I try to see the issue from both points of view and try to understand where different people are coming from. I also agree with you that it's better to base any sort of reopening on data, flawed as that data might be.
