What is viral load and why are so many health workers getting sick?

Whatever your own feelings with the masks - I just can't understand why anybody would expel any amount of energy in order to not wear them. Even to go so far as to threaten hourly wage workers and in at least one instance shoot and kill somebody?

Was there this much of an uproar when "no shirt, no shoes - no service" went mainstream?

All I know is that if someone farts tiny particles of **** can still go through their underwear and through their pants into the surrounding area for other people to ingest. So if that's the case then I'm not sure a couple of bandanas are going to protect anyone from the corona particles

Our office has never shut down and despite an hour away from a really hot spot. I can only speak for our specific department but out of about 40-50, no one has got the virus and only 2 have worn a mask to work... and that was just for the first couple of weeks. No one is wearing one now, not even the guy who checks everyone's temperatures in the morning.

Also, our work gym stayed open the entire time and as of yesterday, the guys have started basketball back up. I'll see how it goes for the first few weeks and if things are still looking good by this time next month, then I'll start back playing as well. I want to be cautious but I also don't want to let fear dictate my life forever either.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

I'd hate to wear a mask, but if it's mandatory, it's mandatory.

I hope that's not where were heading once things resume.

Masks in general I just don't like. Even those ones to keep out dust when doing work around the house, I couldn't manage that. Just felt like it made things worse, was harder to breath in, and bothered my nose/mouth.

Halloween masks too, just got foggy/filled with moisture fairly quickly.

For security reasons too, harder to ID someone who has half their face covered.

Public transportation will be more interesting to see once things resume. How will buses and trains change. You can't tell people to wait for the next one. But anyone who's taken it during rush hour knows how packed they get, and people might be getting angrier (at those near them) going forward if that's the case.

You shed Virus, not Viral loads. Viral Load is a test used to see how much virus a person has in their blood. Viral loads are usually run on people with HIV/AIDS and those who are infected with Hep-C.

This test gives a doctor better information in seeing if treatment is needed or if treatment is working. Meaning the amount of virus in the blood is beginning to go down. The goal is to get a person's viral load to undetectable levels. So low, the sensitivity of the test cannot be read.

Good article on materials for masks and how well they work.

                https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/21/w...e=articleShare

My wife made a couple for me using quilter’s fabric, as it is tightest weave and stops more than other cotton fabric.

The amount of virus floating in the air on falling on products in a grocery store can be significantly reduced by wearing a mask.

Grocery workers spend 40 hours a week inside compared to the hour or so a week I spend. They wear masks for the whole 49 hours, and people whine about how uncomfortable it is for 30-90 minutes.

There was a week later, I really felt there was momentum in the country to shelter and beat this thing. Strong leadership could have moved us forward and really limited the impact of this both health wise and economic.

It’s become depressing to see just how poorly this entire thing has been handled. And despite the Go Back to Work crowd’s claims, this longer we wait to squash the virus, the larger the economic impact.

If I were president, my plan would be to throw a Gail Nary and shut the country down hardcore for two months. But I would create a task force to prepare, and tell the nation the plan, that in two months or six months, what we it will take, we shut down, but we need to prepare.

We mobilize unused hotels as quarantine centers. We start moving food and supplies to depots so that they can be distributed. We pause the stock markets and everything.

We take two months. It’s one shot. It either works or doesn’t. We don’t try again. But we use the police and military to enforce a massive hardcore lockdown.

Eight weeks would snuff the bulk out and allow us to focus testing and tracing in smaller areas as we control future outbreaks.

The biggest problem with the current strategy is that there is no plan. We don’t know how long, we don’t know how much it will cost.
Between this and your constant "I believe we will see troops in the street" drumming (which are related) you may or may not intend to but you give a totalitarian/authoritarian vibe which I extremely dislike.

Goes to show that even if you have the right policy (not saying that you do) it isn't enough to be "right" but to know how to communicate your policy.

There's actually nothing doomsday-esque or exaggerated about anything in that post. Factually, those are the reasons to wear a mask.

Some of his posts may be very doomsday-esque but idk how that one is.

To me it’s an extremely small “sacrifice” to make and there’s no reason not to do it

Hopefully an issue w/ the study or procedures, but one coming out of NYU has the Abbot rapid test (being used and promoted by the White House) missing up to 48% of positive cases.

Findings of study have yet to be reviewed by other scientists.Analysis found that Abbott’s ID NOW missed at least one-third of positive cases detected with a rival test and much as 48% when using the currently recommended dry nasal swabs

The analysis, which has yet to be confirmed, found that Abbott’s ID NOW missed at least one-third of positive cases detected with a rival test and much as 48% when using the currently recommended dry nasal swabs, according to the report posted on BioRxiv, a server where researchers post early work before it has been reviewed by other scientists.

The results, if confirmed, indicate that the Abbott test may still suffer from very high false negative rates despite changes recommended by Abbott to avoid such a problem. In April, after other academic researchers raised concerns about high false-negative rates, Abbott recommended that clinicians avoid storing samples in so-called transport media, a liquid used to keep a sample, as that might dilute the test and lead to false negatives.

But when the NYU authors attempted to account for changes recommended by Abbott to avoid false negatives by using dry swabs, the performance was even worse. It missed the virus in 48% of the samples that were positive using Cepheid GeneXpert, a standard reference test sold by Danaher Corp. The NYU study hasn’t yet been reviewed by outside experts or published in a scientific journal.

This is what happens when you fast track and don't go thru the normal FDA Process.

In NYC we also have urgent care CityMD telling over 15,000 people who tested + for antibodies that they are now "Immune" to Covid-19
