Better to admit the mistake and close down again than staying open and letting this thing continue to run wild, IMO.

I think the biggest thing that needs to happen here in the near term is continuing to normalize wearing masks. While a majority of people are on-board, I still see plenty of people here in west Los Angeles who do not wear them. That has to change.

I think the biggest issue this nation faces is the size of the nation combined with the fact you can't shut down interstate commerce, though I dont think you should be able to.

You'd think with how super smart and educated and rich and open minded and tolerant and super pro-science and all that good stuff the people on the West Side are that it'd be a slam dunk.

Of course, the super conservative conspiracy theory-ingesting backwards hardcore backwoods religious residents of *checks notes* Santa Monica, California haven't even been vaccinating their kids for the last few years, so whattayagonnado.

Def a challenge BUT if China can do it with a population 4x what we have then yeah....no excuses

Taking fully into account that the information from China could be fugazi...

I don’t know if population size is the most important factor in this one.

Some Americans won’t wear a mask because they see it as government overreach. That’s not even a question in a place like China.

I'm not sure what you're trying to imply here.

As someone who actively lives in west Los Angeles, as do many of my friends - who by virtue of being in-and-around the video game industry are mostly college educated, pro-science, certainly far more liberal speaking to their political and moral compasses, and most importantly to this discussion have all been wearing masks and encouraging others to wear masks (and personally I have been giving out masks to people; my mother, a retired respiratory therapist, made me a bunch to give out) - I think I feel insulted.

Maybe people like my friends and I are not who you're talking about. I certainly hope not.

I don't think it should be all or nothing, and I'm not saying there are easy answers at this point. I just question pushing back counties in CA that are doing fine. And I question the long term logic of this.

If we close things down for months, cases go down, then reopen and cases go back up - which they will, with increased testing by that point along with the reopening - will we throw our hands up again and just act like we are back at square one?

One is NY state. The other is Sweden. I'm just wondering if it matters what we do if we end up at the same place and just try to protect the elderly to reduce deaths?

My implication is that you would think Santa Monica/West Side people are traditionally not the people that get labeled as being anti-mask this that during this whole situation, yet here we are. And combine that with the fact that people on the West Side of LA don't particularly believe in vaccinating their kids, and it's one big narrative buster.

I want people on the West Side to be smarter too. I'm happy your friends are doing their part, but it's not surprising to me that you relayed a story about how you're seeing plenty of people not doing so.

County passed a mandatory mask order for the next month. I've been wearing one out grocery/essentials shopping anyway, so it doesn't bother me much tbh.

DeWine made it mandatory to wear masks last week. I'm not big into political **** so I'm sure this is a dumb question...... multiple police agencies have said they're not going to enforce this..... so what's the point in making it mandatory?

I know here in CO mask wearing is enforced by the health department when it comes to businesses.

So if a business is deemed in violation, they fail the health code and lose their license to operate.

But I don't think there's any legal ramifications for the person not wearing the mask

Once you make it mandatory, stores can give more pushback to customers who don't. Most stores here have not made it mandatory regardless of what phase we're in and when sued (yes, sued for ADA reasons) they have been able to counter that they are a private business and can enforce what they choose (no shoes, no shirt, no service).

To you point though, that requires they self police which some stores just gave up on but by in large, it creates more self policing than anything else.

It's not perfect, not going to be perfect but the mandate makes it so there is more of a stigma for those not wearing masks.

That said, they've been mandatory pretty much everyone here for months so it's more second nature here than to states who've been able to go without them for awhile.
