In a way it fills kind of like 9/11 again in that 9/11 was the last time i can remember things being put of like this. Back when 9/11 happened sports where shut down for like a week. Nba stopping really sucks. I know health is the most important thing but i have trouble with depression and sports are like the one thing i have that helps me a little bit has it's something i greatly look foward to.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.
34 million people in the US have gotten the flu this year, including 350,000 hospitalized...20,000 of those have died, including 136 children. I really don’t get the fear people are having over this virus when almost no one has worried about the flu by comparison and it has been so much worse...

This my thing. I'm not downplaying that this virus can be deadly and will spread if people are not smart about what and how they do things. But nobody says anything about the Flu virus which infects and kills so many people every year. Is it because we have a "Vaccine" for it and not the Coronavirus? I put "Vaccine" in quotes because we always use the virus strain from the year before to create it and it's never as effective as advertised for the new years Flu virus. But we treat it like no big deal and it's just a yearly thing. I just don't get it.
Again not downplaying what's going on just trying to understand. I still think the media (social and news) is causing more harm then good. We live in an age where people read a headline and believe whatever it says. It's rare nowadays for people to research and learn about things themselves. That is what is causing the hyperbole IMO. I still can't get over people and all the ****ing toilet paper they are buying lol. it's hilarious.Comment

Pretty much every medical expert I've heard comment on this has taken pains to emphasize the degree to which this is way more dangerous than the flu. I thought lots of people would have understood this by now.I write things on the Internet.

I'm not an expert, but my non-professional understanding is that the various strains of the flu exists all around us (more or less) all the time, and they have had years and years to spread. By contrast, we're pointing to raw numbers for covid19 that has only been in the US for a couple of weeks. That, not to mention that the flu's death rate is about 1 tenth of 1 percent compared to this which is like 3.4% globally as of a week ago.
I don't understand how people still have a cavalier attitude about this when even a country like Italy has literally quarantined their entire population and are seeing a mortality rate of like 7%. I hope that it plateaus soon and becomes nothing more than a blip and minor inconvenience, potentially even attributed to the drastic measures that the US and other countries are taking. I think that having a healthy concern is appropriate though.Comment

The Cleveland Clinic has developed a test for the virus that gives the results in hours and not days. Cleveland rocks.

My guess on why they are making a big deal about this compared to the flu is that it sounds like its 20-30 times more deadly. Also we don't have a shoot for it yet and they are worried it could change into like a worse version of it. Last flu is basically only a like 5 months of the year type of thing. Normally people don't get flu in summer or spring not saying you can't but way less common then. This it sounds like may not get better in the next month where flu we are getting towards the last 3 weeks or so of normal flu season.Comment

I think it's important that the response to coronavirus doesn't dissolve into mass hysteria, but dismissing the threat of coronavirus by saying the flu "is so much worse" is just completely wrong.I write things on the Internet.

I personally have no more concern of catching coronavirus than I do the flu or common cold.
I still go about my daily routine and follow the same protocol when it comes to washing my hands and using hand sanitizer.
I understand the concern because of the unknown but I just don’t buy into the mass hysteria

...because the mortality rate for coronavirus is 20 times higher than the seasonal flu? And you're comparing apples and oranges when you're juxtaposing the figures for the seasonal flu at the tail end of it versus the numbers for coronavirus even though we're in the early stages of the outbreak and testing still isn't online.
Pretty much every medical expert I've heard comment on this has taken pains to emphasize the degree to which this is way more dangerous than the flu. I thought lots of people would have understood this by now.
I’m not saying be cavalier about it; I’m saying the response is way over the top. People are acting like it’s the bubonic plague or something and it’s not. I also don’t believe the mortality rate is as high as we are reporting simply because I am sure there are a lot of people who have had it and didn’t even realize it.
The dangerous thing about this virus to me is how long you can carry it/be contagious without showing symptoms and obviously you could pass it to someone in a high risk category. All that said, I think we’re seeing a lot of fear and CYA happening...

Also, I think CV requires hospitalization at a higher rate than the flu does and our wonderful healthcare system that hardly works as it is can’t handle being bumrushed by thousands more in such a short span. And while flu can be treated with antiviral medication, it doesn’t seem like they know exactly what to use for CV.
Some of the stories coming out of Italy of who gets the only remaining medical equipment are chilling. Italy is the example of what we don’t want to face here. It can happen here, and it probably will to some degree.
A lot of people aren’t even being able to be tested for CV. That’s why they’re pushing for people to take responsibility for themselves and limit social contact. The leagues, festivals, and cities are enforcing these precautions with cancellations and postponements.
The media is pushing it, but in this case I kind of understand why it’s being hyped 24/7 because people won’t listen unless it’s in their ear all day, everyday. It reaches some people who panic, others who are like okay will do, and others who tune it out.
At the end of the day, I don’t want to get sick no matter how severe it is. I’m in a position where my social contact is relatively limited (not flying around, being in big cities, etc) anyway so not much is changing. But others are having to make tougher decisions to stay home from work, cancel flights, events, meetings, etc. Places stepping up and making it a policy decision instead of leaving it up to individuals is probably a good thing as it takes the question of it away.Last edited by slickdtc; 03-12-2020, 05:22 AM.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Just checked-in after posting about the OKC-Jazz cancelation. To read what I've read is just crazy.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.
I'm curious how different infrastructures are prepared to handle this for the long term. Companies and colleges converting to working remotely and online classes is a great idea, but I don't depend on the internet to be able to handle the increased load. Not to mention most rural areas are effectively without internet or are paying premium prices for slow speeds. So clearly that won't be an option for everyone.
Much less all the labor positions that either have no sick time for various reasons, can't afford to miss any time, or face fear of punishment for calling in sick.
Obviously the big crux will be upon the health care infrastructures and that's even more unsettling because I have no faith it can handle any mass event in it's current state. ****, it barely handles the normal cases and that's with most people probably talking themselves out from going to the doctor or hospital.
This has highlighted a lot of spots we should be working to improve for the long-term.

Flu: 20,000/34,000,000 = 0.000588 = 0.0588%
COVID19: 4641/126672 = 0.0366 = 3.66%
So the mortality rate for COVID19 is 3.66/0.057 = 62.24 times higher. Mortality rate is still low compared to something like Ebola, but still much higher than that for the flu. You have to look at more than just total deaths.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

I wonder what the ncaa will do if one of their student athletes test positive in the tourneyKenny: Ok Vic, I'm ready for some girl on girl action.
Vic: No Kenny, that's girl versus girl.
Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....
Kenny: Everyone wins?!?!
