Even if you are not a NBA fan or hoops fan, this is a great IG interview between Steph Curry and Dr. Fauci:

I don’t have much more confidence in the accuracy of our own numbers, especially coupled with the half assed fed response to it.
I don't get it either. What difference does it make if China's numers are accurate or not? Will being able to say our situation is not in fact worse than China's really do any good to anyone?

Maybe it's from an urge to reassure ourselves that it's not that bad? Well it is and it's not getting any better in the next couple of weeks either. This whole thing is a major issue in North America regardless of how much better or worse it is/was in other parts of the world.

Macys releases a statement to us that they consider us an essential business....guess overpriced hoodies and kitchenware are essential.

          They also released this statement:

Yeah even though 80k is not a large percentage when talking about a population of a billion or even 330 million, just within our own little OS family we have someone who has had a relative die, someone else who’s ex wife tested positive, etc.

We’ve hit the stage where the number is large enough to know someone who knows someone who’s been affected. I get trying to keep the panic down especially after the Great TP Shortage of 2020, but damn, we’re already locked up in our homes, we already know it’s bad. I guess not descending in to total apocalyptic chaos is the goal. Uhh, mission accomplished.

I think people are misunderstanding people who say China’s data is suspect; it isn’t saying that means things are going to be better for us...it’s saying that any projections based on that data are going to be low and that this is going to be worse than we originally thought. Also, the fact that early in there was a lot of talk based on the data from China that younger people aren’t impacted and yet now we see that is certainly not the case = it will be worse than we expected.

I’m not sure how anyone takes that as “oh, well we’re doing better than China because their data is bad”.

That makes sense. I took it that way because the implication is that China's real numbers are much higher than reported and therefore the US is most likely not really the most affected in the world as is being currently reported. Your explanation makes just as much sense, although I doubt everyone's motivation in discrediting Chinese information is the same as yours.

The 17 year old who died in LA county was turned away from an urgent care because he didn't have insurance. He went into cardiac arrest on the way to an ER, where he was resuscitated before passing away 6 hours later.

I disagree that this anecdote is representative of healthcare as a whole in this country. Bad outcomes happen in every healthcare system.

Yeah, my biggest concern is the mortality rates will be worse here because we don't have the social infrastructure* seen in other places hit hard. A good portion of our population get virtually no preventative health care. People could think they're not "high risk" and whole time have unknown underlying conditions.

Completely understand and I agree with not getting into that argument here, yours is a fair point. I would point out - as a counterpoint, not as the opening salvo to an argument (in which no one is going to change their mind anyway) - that both Italy and Spain have socialized medical systems.

I think in retrospect there will be a lot to be learned, if we choose to learn in an unbiased and not politically-slanted way. In other words, we won't learn anything....

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

I think it’s pretty clear healthcare doesn’t matter until it matters under any system. It’s also a function of no system being set up to take on X% of the population in a span of a few weeks/months. Even places that were pointed to as having a good response (South Korea) still had their spike in cases and deaths, and I’m pretty sure even eased restrictions and got a new surge in cases. No one has done everything right in this crisis.

There seems to be a few industries that aren’t given the compensation, resources, consideration, etc they deserve until **** hits the fan in some form or another. This one hit most everyone where they were weakest.

I don’t think it’s quite fair to say see what happens when this happens because this doesn’t happen often, but it does show how fragile and vulnerable we can be when faced with a crisis. On that front, I can see this being like 9/11 where we tightened security (for better or worse) going forward. Having the supplies we need on hand, protocols in place, maybe some fun new legislation, will likely all get attention.

The world is changing before our eyes.

Have to agree with you, slickdtc. Of course we all hope that people emerge from this more clear-eyed about what is (and isn't) important and what changes need to be implemented, and one hopes we haven't become so hopelessly polarized that we can't ever work together again as a country, but I remain skeptical that will ever be the case. I really hope I'm wrong, though!
