LB - Marcos Alonso (Spain) (23yrs 65 OVR)
Purchased from Fiorentina for $550k
The first signing in the Chavez era is Spanish defender Marcos Alonso, after he was transfer listed by Fiorentina. The Real Madrid youth product played with Sunderland on loan after signing with Fiorentina, but the Italians decided not to keep him after his return and transfer listed him. Fiorentina's board wanted to let go of the player as soon as possible and didn't complicate the negotiations at all, accepting a transfer fee equal to the player's value. The signing is an important one for Osasuna, as there isn't ANY natural left backs on the squad. The player that's been occupying the LB position has been the Algerian Cadamuro (73 OVR) but he's naturally a CB and he's also on loan with the club. If Alonso can pick up his form he could be the future starting LB or possibly even take the starting now with Cadamuro in a more central role. Alonso will wear the #16 jersey.

ST - Guillermo Fernandez (Spain) (21yrs 68 OVR)
Purchased from Athletic Bilbao for $2m + Nino
Osasuna's weak point is the striker position, and Chavez addressed the issue immediately by signing young Basque striker Guillermo Fernandez from Bilbao. Initially, Chavez wanted to go all out and bring Kike Sola back to Osasuna, but the Bilbao board replied with a stern "you cannot afford him" message. Chavez insisted for weeks until Bilbao finally named a price, but indeed it was too high for Osasuna's budget: $7m. Chavez's next target down the list was Juanmi from Malaga, but once again the asking price was too high for his budget: $4.7m. In the end, Chavez went back to Bilbao but this time to negotiate the transfer for Guillermo Fernandez, a Bilbao youth product far down the pecking order at the club. Bilbao were willing to let the player go out on loan not on a permanent transfer, but eventually they chose to accept Chavez's final offer of $2m plus 34 year old striker Nino (70 OVR). Nino had picked up an injury before Chavez's arrival and would miss the entire preseason, so Chavez wasn't reluctant to let the veteran striker go when his advisors brought it up. Guillermo will take the #9 jersey.

Preseason Friendlies
CA Osasuna 1 - 3 Racing Club
OSA: Guillermo 41'
RAC: Bou 45' Perez 51' Videla 75'
A terrible start for any manager, to lose at home and by playing so poorly. The match was almost going perfect, with young Guillermo netting his first goal with the club and backing up Chavez after making such a drastic decision by trading a veteran striker like Nino for an inexperienced one. In the next 10 minutes the Argentinians equalized the match and then flipped it, the first goal coming from a terrible mistake from Osasuna's Basque goalkeeper Riesgo. Racing had sent a high cross into the box and Riesgo shouted that it was his. His defenders listened and gave him room to get to the ball, but Riesgo backed out of his decision and returned to the goal when he was already halfway out. The result: the Racing player was left wide open to jump comfortably towards an open goal with Riesgo completely out of position. Osasuna tried to get back in to the game with pretty pathetic attempts and Racing ended it in the 75th minute scoring the 3rd goal. The Osasuna fans booed at their new manager as he retreated to the dressing rooms.
Sydney FC 1 - 2 CA Osasuna (B-Team)
SYD: Antonis 8'
OSA: J. Garcia 27' Onwu 54'
Chavez said in his first press conference that he would be focusing on getting the result rather than playing attractive football, and that's exactly what we saw in this match. Chavez fielded a B team with a customized 5-3-1-1. Osasuna went down early on and it looked like we would be seeing another pitiful display from Chavez, but in the 27th minute young Jose Garcia equalized the match through a rebound giving Chavez a little room to breathe. Early in the second half Spanish striker Onwu gave Osasuna the lead by mounting a counter attack all by himself after a corner kick, sprinting into the box and powering the ball against the post and into the net. After that, Osasuna focused on holding the lead and we didn't see much from them anymore, but Sydney were pushing hard for the equalizer. Fortunately for Chavez, the match ended with his lead still intact.
CA Osasuna 1 - 0 Stade Brest
OSA: Onwu 74'
Again, an Osasuna focused on getting a positive result and nothing more. The Basques were having a tough time finishing their plays in the final third leading to Chavez taking Guillermo out of the match and subbing in Onwu. Onwu responded in barely his first touch of the ball, getting to the end of a through ball and defeating the goalkeeper 1 on 1, giving Osasuna the win. Chavez asked his players to take a deep breath and settle down in order to hold the lead. His players were able to keep it together leading to Chavez's 2nd win with the club.
Osasuna Player of The Month

ST - Manuel Onwu (Spain) (26yrs 64 OVR)
When word came out that Nino would be leaving the club, Onwu got into position to take the starting spot as the spearhead of Osasuna's attack. It must've been a huge disappointment for him to later on hear that Nino had indeed left the club, put in a swap deal for another striker: Guillermo. Regardless, Onwu stepped up during the preseason and scored the winning goal twice. In a month where none of the Osasuna players stood out, Onwu pushed himself to make the difference. Despite coming in on an expensive transfer, Guillermo shouldn't be too comfortable with a striker like Onwu battling to take the starting spot at every practice.
Conclusion
Things didn't start off good at all and despite having a promotion candidate team I don't think this is gonna be an easy season. I know the way I'm playing isn't the way a promotion candidate should be playing, but I feel like I don't have another choice. I don't see the advantage I'm supposed to have over other teams I don't feel I have a solid squad. Most of the team's foreign players recently joined the club so I couldn't transfer list or trade them from Spanish players, but the team needs squad depth right now so I'm not too worried about it. Even though the board gave me a WAY bigger budget than AFC Wimbledon did in my first 3 seasons, I still feel broke. My transfer targets are more expensive than I thought and the majority that I could actually afford had just joined their club so they couldn't move. Osasuna also sold a lot of good players after getting relegated. Going into the transfer window I thought I would be throwing cash around like crazy telling everybody to keep the change but I soon realized this isn't League 2. I feel like this might just be my first ever career I get fired from, in which case I would go to Racing.
That's it for our preseason.
Thanks for Reading!
