    THE VILLAN'S REPORT

With the start of the Barclays Premier League appoaching, Aston Villa look to be in for a tough season, with departures to Fabian Delph (Manchester City) & key striker Christian Benteke (Liverpool), Aston Villa have to find an avenue to score this season, and that responsibility has been placed on fan favourite Gabrielle Agbonlahor, aswell as 23 year old Jordan Ayew.

After starting his career in France, Ayew joins Aston Villa after playing on high profile teams such as Marsielle, FC Sochaux, and arriving from FC Lorient for £7,000,000 Ayew has big shoes to fill in Benteke's absence.
Ayew has not had a great start to his campaign at Aston Villa looking lost in the forward structure in his limited game time and getting injured against Nacional in the Pre-Season tournament in Portugal keeping him out for the remainder of the tournament.

With the squad touching back down in England this past week after a challenging tournament in Portugal, Ayew stated "I am ready to go for Bournemouth, Aquilina is going to be a great manager, he is really helping me improve my game and grow as a player, we know we have a tough year ahead, but we are ready to work hard".
With just 3 weeks to go until kick off for the Premier League, we can only hope too see what the Ghanian is capable of in the upcoming matches against a very telling August fixture.

      End of Season Update

      League Match 40
Exeter City - Newport County (0-1)
      McKay 25' (Twunasi)

Four-game winning streak dating back to the end of March. It wasn't easy but McKay, who has really been in groove since soon after joining mid-season, gave the Exiles the only goal they would need to go with their stingy defense to allow Newport to keep pace with the top three in the table.

      League Match 41
      Newport County - Wycombe (1-2)
      McKay 14' (Elito)
      Ugwu 37'
      McGinn 90' (pen)

That hurt. That hurt A LOT. Wycombe played Marccelino's squad very evenly but the game deserved to end with a draw, not with an unnecessary penalty kick resulting from an unintentional handball in the box. Sigh.

      League Match 42
York City - Newport County (0-2)
      Arteaga 77' (Gardner)
      Arteaga 89'

The Exiles get right back on a winning groove thanks not just to the Venezuelan on loan from Palermo, but to an outstanding performance from their goalkeeper Joe Day who earned Man of the Match honors.

      League Match 43
Newport County - AFC Wimbledon (2-1)
      Gardner 16' (Elito)
      Arteaga 48'

      Elliot 82'

Wimbledon may be near the bottom fourth of the table but they had beaten the Exiles earlier on this season and once again played them tough, making them sweat till the end. However, Newport's defense was able to seal the deal to keep Marccelino and his army very close to putting themselves in the top-3 in the standings.

      League Match 44
      Barnet - Newport County (1-2)
      Arteaga 40'
      Elito 45'

      Lisbie 74'

They've done it. The Exiles move into 3rd place in the table thanks to another gritty win to go with a draw from Oxford United and Newport will control their own destiny with just two games left!

      League Match 45
Newport County - Mansfield Town (1-1)
      Green 30' (pen)
      McKay 61' (Byrne)

The Exiles missed an opportunity to clinch promotion to League One after only managing a draw against Mansfield Town, who left everything on the pitch as they try to clinch a playoff spot. The home team created more opportunities but in the end it wasn't enough. Fortunately for them Oxford also managed just one point so Newport will go into the season finale knowing that a win will get them through.

      League Match 46
      Hartlepool - Newport County (2-2)
      McKay 14' (Gardner)
      Featherstone 23'
      Arteaga 56' (Byrne)
      Bingham 71'

Oh, THE HORROR. Bottom-side Hartlepool seemed determined to spoil the party and they accomplished their goal, keeping Newport to a draw which paired with a win by Oxford United keeps them outside direct promotion to League One and into the League Two playoffs. Heart-breaking. The Exiles threw the kitchen sink at the home team, edging them in possession (57%) and vastly out-shooting them with 11 shots (7 on goal) but their defense, which had earned them so many points this season, was unable to protect two leads and Marccelino will now need to get his squad ready for a playoff series against 7th place Stevenage.

League 2 Playoffs - Semi Final, 1st Leg
      Stevenage - Newport County(0-2)
      Day 40' (OG)
      Byrne 79' (Twunasi)

Nerves clearly affected both teams in the first half but the Exiles were able to shake it sooner, and in the 40th a minute a shot from Elito was deflected by Boro goalkeeper Chris Day and Newport took a lead into the half. From there they were able to keep the composure in the 2nd half even after losing edge in possession and taking less shots than the home squad, but were the more opportunistic side and sealed a 1st leg win with a goal from Byrne inside the last 15 minutes.

League 2 Playoffs - Semi Final, 2nd Leg
      Newport County - Stevenage (3-3, 5-3 agg)
      Byrne 2' (Burke)
      Akinyemi 9'
      Day 17' (OG)
      Byrne 23' (Gardner)

      McAllister 45'
      Kennedy 79' (pen)

The Exiles sealed their ticket to the playoffs final after a wild one at Rodney Parade. A good number of fans weren't even on their seats yet when Byrne got them home team on the board after just two minutes but before the 10-minute mark the game had been equalized by Akinyemi. It may take a while for Boro goalkeeper to get past this series, and there are questions as to whether he will retire after this game, but he was once again tagged with an own goal, although to be fair the goal should had been awarded to McKay outright as his shot seemed to be on goal before it was deflected by the goalkeeper. Undoubtedly Day was distraught as soon after Byrne scored a 3rd goal for the home side, creating what would be an insurmountable lead. Credit goes to Stevenage as they never gave up, closing the gap before the half and leveling the score with just over 10 minutes left, but the two-goal difference from the first leg ended up getting Newport through.

Review: To be honest this update comes a while after I actually got done with this part of the career so I'm kinda over it by now. Hell of a ride. There are some positives that come out of this so I'll try to focus on those. For one, we should be heavy favorite for promotion next season so it'll be fun to see if we can play at that level. For two, we get to improve our team even more before we start our climb up the Football League so that's not such a bad team. I look forward to performing better in the COC and JPT after losing in the first round in both of those this season. I think I'd really like to win the JPT, establish that Newport County will be a force once we get to League One.

Can't just focus on our failures to achieve promotion and dismiss the great season we had as an unit and individually. The acquisition of Gardner last summer paid off, he was our top player in nearly every game and I was glad to see he was recognized as Player of the Year. Joe Day surprised me, he was a great goalkeeper and may be able to hold down that spot for at least another year. Manuel Arteaga took a while to get going but once he did he was a force for us and earned that golden boot. He may not be able to repeat that feat next season, his last under loan for us, because Jack McKay is looking like a real baller that may contend for that scoring title in '16-'17. I look forward to the summer transfer window and the upcoming season.

We also have some promising lads in the academy. Adam Adeyemi had a very good year scouting for us and before the season ended we hired a second scout, Kimmo Rasanen from Finland. He's being asked to get started in his homeland. This is what the youth squad looks like at season's end:

      - Bondz Moore (LW, 60 OVR, 81-87 POT): Our top remaining prospect after one season, Moore has higher upside than Jack Giles who performed admirably off the bench of us in the second half of the season. We're expecting growth from his current frame (5'0", 134lbs) and at just 16 years old this Englishman offer a lot of talent. He doesn't have top-end speed at the moment but his first step is deadly and he's very agile.
      - Patrick Miller (ST, 53 OVR, 75-89): The younger of the Miller brothers turned 17 years old by season's end and the Irishman has grown to 5'9" and 158lbs, which is very good size for his position. Coaches describe him as "technically gifted" and he brings good speed to the position.
      - Ben Potter (LM, 57 OVR, 78-84): This 16-year old from England looks similar to Moore but prefers to play a bit closer to midfield although he offers a bit more speed.
      - Cristiano Dall'Oglio (CDM, 52 OVR, 77-83): This 16-year old defensive-minded midfielder from Italy flashes leadership skills at a very young age. Has a promising future.
      - Mark Miller (RM, 50 OVR, 71-85): The older Miller brother is a 17-year old Irishman standing at 6-feet tall and 181lbs. He brings a lot of physicality but is still rough around the edges (although very agile) and needs to work hard in the academy.
      - Patrick Brennan (LW, 45 OVR, 63-83)*: This 15-year old from Ireland is the most recent addition to the academy. Adeyemi saw enough flashes from him to highly recommend him and we hope to be able to help improve his game since he's still very young.
      *recent addition

Taylor Nelson was promoted to the senior squad near the end of the season at his request. Unfortunately 16-year old Danilo Sabbione (CM, 50 OVR, 74-82) abruptly left the academy without much explanation. We wish the Italian the best.

          Ha Ho He

          January 2018

          Transfers Out

Maximilian Mittelstädt, 64 Ovr, Left Back,
          €500,000 to 1. FC Heidenheim

Even though the left back position is lacking proper depth, the 21-year-old man was never going to break into the starting eleven or to the bench with his low potential. We simply didn't need him in the team.

Valentin Stocker, 78 Ovr, Attacking Midfielder, €8,000,000 to FC Augsburg

We sold him for two reasons: he wasn't useful for the squad, making only two pre-season appearances, and he didn't want to accept a contract extension. Augsburg were ready to pay our eight million valuation for Stocker.

          Transfers In

          Yussuf Poulsen

75 Ovr, Striker, 23 Years Old, Denmark

          €6,000,000

The only signing Hertha BSC completed in the transfer window was signing the young Danish striker Yusuf Poulsen from the most hated German football club, Red Bull Leipzig. The 23-year-old represented The Red Bulls for five years since 2013, netting a solid amount of goals in the two top German leagues. Poulsen, who combines well pace, finishing and dribbling, could be a long-term replacement for the Herthaner's 32-year-old Salomon Kalou.

          ***

          Hertha BSC 3 - 1 VfB Stuttgart
          Kalou 51', 89', Geis 79'
          Gentner 32'

          1899 Hoffenheim 1 - 1 Hertha BSC
          Pratto 31'
          Kalou 50'

          Bundesliga Table

          1. Bayern München, 46 pts
          2. Borussia Dortmund, 42 pts
          3. Hertha BSC, 37 pts
          4. VfL Wolfsburg, 36 pts
          5. Bayer Leverkusen, 31 pts
          6. FC Schalke 04, 30 pts
          -----------------------------------------------------
          16.Werder Bremen, 15 pts
          17. RB Leipzig, 14 pts
          18. Eintracht Frankfurt, 14 pts

          Starting XI
          As of February 1st

That is it, the 'rückrunde', or second round/return round, has officially started. We managed to pick four points from two games and remain in third, six points in front of fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Our objective for the season is still to finish in the top four and secure a Champions League spot. Challenging for the league title is out of our reach and it will stay like that for at least a couple of seasons more.

The transfer window could be considered to be a slight failure because we failed to sell Stefan Aigner and Yunus Malli. There were several offers for both of them and we accepted a few, but all of the deals fell through as the players preferred to rotten in our reserves. Fortunately, we managed to sell Stocker and we signed Yusuf Poulsen to take Kalou's spot in the future.

February will be a tough month for us with seven games, including a DFB Pokal quarter final against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the first leg of our Champions League round of 16 clash with Saint-Etienne and league games against top sides Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope you have enjoyed it! Any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated!

            The Bluebirds

            Summer 2016

"So that's what you've got to work with Mr. Keano."

'Just to recap, that's £17 million and £80 thousand in wages? And the goal is midtable finish and a round of 32 appearance in either cup.'

"Yes that's correct and as we'll be competing in the Europa League, a quarter final will do."

Oh yeah very realistic Mr. Tan.

'We'll see what we can manage. £17 million should cover the targets I have in mind and some players will be offloaded to raise extra funds.'

"Should you desperately need more cash, don't hesitate to ask. I want this club to stay up and compete in years to come as much as you do Keano."

'I know you do, which is why I think we'll succeed and have a solid season. Now if you'll excuse me, the lads need training.'

"Of course, I'll call in the next few days to discuss plans and transfer targets with you and Mehmet."

'Good, good. We'll talk then, have a good day.'

            "Same to you."

We'll have our work cut out meeting those goals.

'Right lads, go for five laps and then Gary will take you through your stretches.'

            *Groans*

'Less of that or it'll be ten!'

            Transfers

Marcus Bettinelli Pre-Contract Arrival from Fulham

The 24 year old was an England U21 international last season and so his quality is undoubted. The goalkeeper arrives on a free to provide cover for first choice keeper Rubén Blanco.

Benik Afobe £5 million from Wolves

After a series of loan spells Benik made a permanent switch to Wolves in January 2015 from Arsenal, the club he had been a part of since the age of 6. Benik is a pacey striker but at 6'0" he has a decent presence meaning he can play alone up front or with a partner. At 23, his best years are still ahead of him and he will be looking to cement his place in the starting eleven.

Jeffrey Bruma £5.5 million from PSV

A former Chelsea youth, where he made four first team appearances joins from Dutch side PSV after three years in the Dutch league. Jeffrey is a quality defender with great physicality and tackling and should form a formidable partnership with Manga in defence.

Adam Henley £2.3 million from Blackburn Rovers

We felt that the fullback positions had to be upgraded and that's exactly what we did with young Adam from Blackburn. The American can play at left back as well as his natural right back position and at 22 still has plenty of room and time to grow. He qualifies for Wales through his mother and was recently capped by the senior side having lived in England since he was 2.

Michael Hector £4 million from Reading

A Jamaican international, Michael arrives from Reading to add more quality depth at centre half. He also is capable of playing in midfield as a defensive screen in front of the back four.

            Out
Adedeji Oshilaja Two-year Loan to Gillingham

            Matthew Connelly £500k to Middlesbrough

Ben Turner £1.2 million to Nottingham Forest

Adam Le Fondre £1.5 million to Real Zaragoza

Thomas James Season Loan to Morecambe

            Simon Moore £300k to Preston

            David Tutonda £150k to Como

Scott Malone £1.2 million to Derby

Lee Peltier £575k to Nottingham Forest

Joe Ralls £700k to Blackburn Rovers

Kagisho Dikgacoi £425k to Blackburn Rovers

All the players above were either not good enough or were not needed. Adedeji and Thomas were sent out on loan to get the game time they both need to continue their development.

            Total Received: £6.55 million
            Total Spent: £16.8 million
            Net Spend: £10.25 million

            Preseason

We travelled to Belgium for our preseason tournament to prepare for the new season. Our group consisted of ourselves, Fulham, KV Mechelen and Nottingham Forest. We dispatched Forest 4-1 with goals from Iheanacho, Gunnarsson, Le Fondre and Williams in the opening game. Fulham were up next and we could only manage a 2-2 draw, Afobe netting on his debut and Williams adding a goal to go with his assist. Bettinelli also made his debut against his former club. To finish the group stage we dominated KV Mechelen 3-0. The goals coming from Whittingham, Vokes and Le Fondre. Genk were our semi final opponents. The Belgians put up a good fight but goals from Vokes and Williams sent us through to the final. Williams has really impressed, that being his third goal of the tournament and he also set up Vokes for a second assist. New signing Jeffrey Bruma made his first appearance alongside Bruno Ecuélé Manga in defence. The final was us against German side Kaiserslautern. It ended in a scrappy 1-0 win with Iheanacho scoring the deciding goal just after halftime.

            July 31, Wembley Stadium
            FA Community Shield

            Cardiff City 0-1 Chelsea
            32' Costa

            MotM: Thibaut Courtois (CHE)

The traditional curtain raiser to the season was settled by a Diego Costa header just after 30 minutes. Both sides had a couple of early chances with Phillips and Oscar striking the post. Blanco then denied the Brazilian from a similar position. Then came the winner, Piazon swung an inch perfect cross onto the head of Costa for an easy header. Bruma losing the striker in the area. The Dutch international nearly made amends for his error late on but his header went just wide. In the end Chelsea were deserved winners.

            August 8, Stadium of Light
            Barclays PL: Match 1

            Sunderland 0-2 Cardiff City
            45' (Pen) 77' Whittingham

            MotM: Peter Whittingham (CAR)

It was a successful first game back in the Premier League with the star man from last season bagging a brace. Younes Kaboul had a horrid game, body checking Whittingham as he turned smartly past him for the penalty and then taking a poor touch allowing Whittingham to take the ball and race through to score.

Benik Afobe will miss 4 weeks with a sprained ankle picked up after he came on against Sunderland.

            August 13, Cardiff City Stadium
            Barclays PL: Match 2

            Cardiff City 1-1 Crystal Palace
            45' Henley
            80' Chamakh

            MotM: Julian Speroni (CRY)

We possibly should have scored a goal or two more with the chances we had but we didn't and MotM Julian Speroni was a big part of that. He did however make one mistake, parrying Amartey's long drive into the path of fullback Henley, making his first competitive start, who smashed the ball home. A moment of quality between Ledley and Chamakh grabbed a point for the away side. The Welsh international chipped it over the defence into his teammate who controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed it past a helpless Blanco.

            Barclays PL: Match 3

            Newcastle 0-0 Cardiff City

            MotM: Daniel Amartey (CAR)

After a disastrous first half where we didn't register a single shot, we improved in the second 45 minutes to secure a second successive draw and point. Crucially none of Newcastle's six shots were on target so even though they created much better chances we still got our point.

            Capital One Cup: Round 2

            Bournemouth 2-1 Cardiff City
            35' Kermorgant, 45' Fraser
            79' Iheanacho

            MotM: Anthony Pilkington (CAR)

The side was fully rotated to play one of our cup opponents from last season as the fixture comes three days after the Newcastle draw. We couldn't progress however as a poor first half gave Bournemouth a two goal lead which they didn't relinquish. The first came when Rantie got away down the left and crossed beautifully for Kermorgant to slide in and score. The striker got in between Hector and Henley leaving Bettinelli with no chance of saving it. He certainly could have saved the second goal though when Fraser, all be it too easily, dribbled into the box and smashed past him. Iheanacho did manage to pull a goal back off the bench when Pilkington slipped him in but it was all too little too late as far as our chances of a League Cup win go this season.

Jonathan Williams will be out for approximately four weeks as he recovers from a sprained knee suffered against Bournemouth.

            Barclays PL: Match 4

            Cardiff City 2-2 Manchester United
            13' Iheanacho, 40' Whittingham
            43' Rooney, 58' Depay, 90' Jones s/o

            MotM: Craig Noone (CAR)

What a game. We surprisingly went two goals ahead thanks to Iheanacho and Whittingham. The young Nigerian made both Jones and Shaw look stupid with his dribbling before curling the ball around Romero. United in all honesty should have defended better. Whittingham then added the second with a beautiful curling effort from 18 yards. We wouldn't have our two goal cushion for long however as Rooney produced a moment of quality to score from 20 yards out on his left foot. After halftime Fabio foolishly pulled down Depay inside the area but Blanco got a strong left hand to Rooney's effort. Straight afterwards though, we failed to clear the corner and Depay smashed home the equalizer. Iheanacho then Whittingham hit the crossbar in the last ten minutes before Jones, who was having a terrible game, was sent off for a challenge inside the box on Iheanacho. The striker was just about to get his shot away when Jones slid in, taking him out. Romero however repeated Blanco's feat and saved the spot kick.

              Dorados de Sinaloa
              Roster Review

My first year as a HC didn't start out too well over at Central Coast Mariners but I closed strong in the second half after my move to Dorados in the Mexican League where we were able to win the Clausura '16. I'll take this time to give my current roster a review before I get to the upcoming season.

              Starting XI

GK - Luis Michel (70 OVR) -The 36-year old from Mexico rides into the sunset as a champion and he was a big reason we accomplished what we did as his 8 clean sheets in the Clausura were second best in the league. I wish I could talk him out of retirement but he's pretty set on that. 7.5/10

RB - Severo Mexa (68 OVR)
              - The 29-year old Mexican on loan from Monterrey was very serviceable for us yet unspectacular. He was good enough on defense to make an impact there but offered very little on offense. He did earn league honors listed in the team of the tournament, but although we appreciate his efforts we probably won't be looking to renew his loan deal. 7/10

RCB - Jesus Chavez (68 OVR)
              - This 30-year old from Mexico was a stabilizing force in our backfield and didn't give a lot of flash but got the job done for us. He also earned league honors. We'd like to get younger at the position so we probably won't be looking to get a new loan for him but we wish him the best once he's back with Tijuana. 7.5/10

LCB - Jonathan Lacerda (67 OVR)
              - The 29-year old from Uruguay is one of the few players owned by the club who was a mainstay with the starters. He performed well enough to probably remain a starter next season but he doesn't offer everything I want out of the position so I'm not clear on what his long-term outlook will be. His lone goal in the playoffs was huge though. 7/10

LB - Daniel Arreola (67 OVR)
              - Much like Meza, this 30-year old from Mexico was good enough for us defensively but offered very little on offense which is an issue for me since my system requires offensive input from the fullbacks. For that reason it is unlikely we'll try to renew his loan from Pachuca. 6.5/10

CDM - Wilson Tiago (70 OVR)
              - The 32-year old Brazilian on loan from Veracruz was our captain in the Clausura and a good leader for us running all over the field. He worked hard and was often subbed out inside the last 30 minutes but he was a good piece for us, netting 3 assists. There's a chance we may try to renew his loan depending how the summer shakes out. 7.5/10

RM - Yimmi Chara (75 OVR)
              - The 25-year old from Colombia was the ultimate pro since I arrived, accepting a role change from striker to right midfielder and adapting well. He dealt with media scrutiny due to a lack of scoring but he did what I needed him to do and was a constant force on offense even if the stats (1 goal, 3 assists), don't necessarily show it. While I would love to have a player of his caliber back with us next season, I'm not even sure Monterrey would put him back for loan and we may not be able to afford his wages. We'll see how this goes. 7.5/10

LM - Joe Corona (69 OVR)
              - The 25-year old American on loan from Tijuana took care of all the set plays for us in the Clausura and contributed 2 goals and 4 assists. He earned a spot in the team of the tournament. However, he had this issues where he disappeared at times. Regardless, there's some mutual interest there in renewing a loan deal so that door will remain open for now. 7.5/10

CAM - Anthony Caceres (67 OVR)
              - I could had never imagined that this 23-year old Australian I recruited from CCM could had been this special for us this season, but that's exactly what he was. Getting off to a scoring rampage in the early going, he helped us get off to a good start and consistently put pressure on opposing defenses. His scoring streak halted towards the end of the season but he made his impact in other ways and totaled 9 goals and 3 assists for us. He has an added value of being a solid defender who can also play at CDM if needed. 8.5/10

RS - Freddy Martin (66 OVR)
              - The 29-year old from Mexico started the season on the bench without much consideration for playing time but an injury to Martin Zuñiga early in the season gave him an opportunity to start and he ran away with it, scoring 5 goals to go with a league-best 5 assists. He's club-owned and will have a great opportunity to remain a starter going into next season. 7.5/10

LS - Wilson Morelo (72 OVR)
              - The 29 year old from Colombia is the team MVP for Clausura '16. He started the season really hot with a few scores in the next few games then continued to be a main piece of our offense while Caceres hot-streak carried the team. But it was Morelo who once again got hot in the playoffs and led our title run so he ran away with the award. The stats back him up, he co-led the league in assists with 5 (Martin) and finished second in scoring (12) to Gignac from Tigres who was named tournament MVP. Like most of our starters he was loan so we'll be really interesting in bringing him back, perhaps through a purchase from Monterrey. 9.5/10

              Bench

RWB - Carlos Pinto (63 OVR) - The 30-year old from Mexico made the most appearances off the bench in the Clausura with 21. This after not playing at all in the Apertura so he was really happy about that. More effective on offense than defense, he managed a couple of assists. He's the default starter at RB going into next season but I think he's at his best in the role he played this season. 6/10

CM - Mathias Cardacio (68 OVR)
              - The 28-year old Uruguayan was a main player off the bench for us and made 15 appearances, often subbing in for Caceres or Thiago. He only scored once prior to the playoffs but stepped up for us in the big stage netting 2 goals and 2 assists in the playoffs. He's penciled in as our starter at CAM going into next season, moving Caceres to CDM. 7/10

ST - Martin Zuñiga (66 OVR)
              - The 23-year old Mexican, a loanee from C.A. America, was a starter for us before suffering a torn hip flexor in training at the beginning of February that kept him out for roughly 3 months. Martin's emergence kept Zuñiga in a bench role once he got healthy but he was still able to make an impact for us in the playoffs with both of his goals representing big accomplishments - one against Toluca to begin our comeback from 0-2 to a 3-2 win, and the lone goal in the 2nd leg of the final to give us the title. He also netted 2 assists through his 10 appearances in the Clausura. All that being said, we're unlikely to request another loan for him. 7/10

CDM - Diego Mejia (61 OVR)
              - The 32-year old Mexican played sporadically for us off the bench, making 11 appearances. He's at his ceiling as a sporadic bench player and we may look to upgrade at the backup CDM position. 5.5/10

LB - Jairo Gonzalez (64 OVR)
              - The 24-year old from Mexico made 9 appearances off the bench for us without contributing much. By default he's penciled in as our starter at LB for next season but you best believe we'll be looking for a starter to keep Gonzalez in a bench role. He's just not starter material at this point. 5/10

              ********

Other thoughts on the roster: No other played made more than 6 appearances for the club in the Clausura so I won't list those. I'm both scared and excited for the summer transfer window due to all the loaned players who had a big role for us. A player worth mentioning is Chinese international Liu Binbin (68 OVR), he only made 2 appearances but he worked his butt off in training since my arrival and he's primed to be our starter at RM next season. Victor Alonso (61 OVR) from the academy is another player to watch, he's by far our top-rated prospect and described by some scouts as elite. We'll continue to work on improving his game and make him ready for the senior squad but I would be shocked if he isn't promoted at some point next season.

              On to '16-'17 we go!

                Hertha BSC - Hannover 96

The Olympiastadion in Berlin was full of football fans, especially Hertha BSC fans, who were ready to watch their team's second DFB Pokal final in a row. Last season the capital's club lost to the Bundesliga champion Bayern München. This season the Old Lady has improved a lot and they are facing a midtable side Hannover 96. Additionally, last time these two teams faced, Hertha came out on top. The odds are in Hertha's favour.

One man who will be missed by Herthaners is the Ivorian striker Salomon Kalou. The 32-year-old Bundesliga top scorer picked up a horrendous ACL injury in the beginning of the month and he isn't expected to appear on the pitch for half a year. Hertha still have some firepower with Vedad Ibisevic, Alexander Baumjohann, Aron Johansson and Yusuf Poulsen, but the quality of Kalou is undenied.

                Final
                Hertha BSC - Arsenal FC

A week after their historic first DFB Pokal triumph Hertha BSC were ready to face the English Arsenal FC in the Champions League final. Speaking of historical, this game was Hertha's first Champions League final in their first Champions League campaign since 1999. With the final about to be played on Hamburger SV's Volksparkstadion, blue and white were the dominant colours in the stands.

Looking at the teams on paper, Arsenal has the better squad with the likes of Miralem Pjanic and Santi Cazorla. Additionally, the Gunners have fast and agile attackers with Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez leading the line against Hertha's clunky centre backs. The Berliners have been lacking defensive quality this season but on the other hand, they have scored quite a few goals.

Hertha BSC might have the worse team on paper, but only what happens on the pitch matters. Marvin Plattenhardt and Mitchell Weiser will have an important job in containing Arsenal's skillful wingers. The centre-half duo of Langkamp and Brooks have played together for several seasons and they form a strong partnership with the quality keeper Rune Jarstein behind them. Questions will be asked towards the central midfield pivot of Vladimir Darida and Johannes Geis who often tend not to mark their men in defence and don't seem to care about defending, leaving huge gaps in midfield. Winger Kevin Kampl is unpredictable and dangerous as always and he forms a good partnership with right back Mitchell Weiser on the wing. On the left-hand side the young Leroy Sané, who took Julian Brandt's place in the starting eleven, is expected to create some havoc down the left. A lot of responsibility falls on the striker duo of Aron Johansson and Vedad Ibisevic, neither of whom have had a great season.

As a conclusion, the midfield battle and action on the wings will decide the game. No matter what happens, one thing is for sure: there will be goals.

                Hertha BSC's starting eleven

                4-4-2

                Jarstein
                Weiser - Brooks - Langkamp - Plattenhardt
                Kampl - Darida - Geis - Sané
                Johansson - Ibisevic

                Arsenal FC's starting eleven

                4-3-3

                Cech
Debuchy - Koscielny - David Luiz - Monreal
                Ramsey - Pjanic - Cazorla
                Walcott - Welbeck - Sanchez

                ***

The game began with Hertha's kickoff and the Berliners were eager to score. After a bit of midfield passing the ball was played down the wing to Kevin Kampl who crossed the ball into the box looking for the heads of Johansson and Ibisevic. The ball was cleared by the defence and from the following corner the ball was caught by Petr Cech in net.

It was Arsenal's turn to attack and the ball was played into the Gunners' attacking third. Ramsey passed it out wide to Walcott, back to Ramsey, Ramsey to Pjanic. Pjanic then took it around Johannes Geis and split the defence, seeing Santi Cazorla's run. The Spaniard took control of the ball and from around 11 metres away shot the ball into the top right corner to give his team the lead in the 20th minute. The stadium turned a bit quieter but just three minutes after the goal Hertha's Ibisevic equalised from Kevin Kampl's pass. Twenty minutes later Danny Welbeck put the English side back in lead with an unmarked header and that was how the first half would end.

The second half began with Arsenal's kickoff and they were hungry for more goals. Hertha defended well until the 52nd minute when a free kick was called against them from the right edge of the box. It was taken short to Miralem Pjanic who then unleashed a deadly strike from outside the box straight into the bottom left corner of the net. The score was 3-1 for Arsenal and things weren't looking good for Hertha, especially with Vedad Ibisevic missing three good chances in the following twenty minutes. In the 81st minute Vladimir Darida was able to get into the box and the Czech midfield engine curled the ball into the bottom right corner. It was 3-2 and there were ten minutes left. Hertha were pressing and attacking but Petr Cech in net was having a very good game.

Finally in the 88th minute Kevin Kampl stole the ball from David Luiz inside the box, turned around Laurent Koscielny, played a pass to the unmarked youngster Yusuf Poulsen... and the Danish striker tapped the ball into the empty net! Hertha had equalised in the last couple of minutes of the game! Soon the referee blew his whistle and the game was set for extra time.

Both teams were playing in defensive-minded fashion in extra time and there weren't any clear-cut chances. The half an hour and by fast and it was time for a penalty shoot-out.

That is it, the 2017-18 season is over and it was a huge success for us! Winning the Bundesliga was never a target for us and honestly, I'm not quite sure how we ended up being second. We finally managed to win the DFB Pokal which has been our target for a few seasons now. Winning the Champions League wasn't an objective for us but after an amazing performance against Barcelona I knew that we could win the competition. Coming back from 3-1 down in the final was the icing on the cake.

About next season: the board wants us to reach the quarter finals of the DFB Pokal, reach the quarter finals of the Champions League and achieve a top four finish in the league. All of these objectives are obtainable and I'm looking to win the DFB Pokal again. Challenging for the title in the Bundesliga is something that we are not quite ready for yet.

As far as the squad goes, I'm having a hard time with Geis and Darida. The two defensive midfielders in our 4-4-2 holding tend to defend higher than the strikers and they leave huge amounts of space in our defensive third. I think we also need a more prolific striker up front.

Finally, I have two questions, or polls, for you. We have a huge budget of sixty million and I'm not sure what to do with the money. I'd appreciate it a lot if you could quickly take a look at the polls and leave a vote. Thanks in advance!

Thanks! We're going to need a good squad to cope with all the competitions this season. Increase as in from what I finished last season with or started last season with? I can't remember what I finished last season with, possibly a couple of million and the starting budget was our 8-10 million IIRC. Can't remember precisely what I've got left over for January but it could be around 5-6 million. That could increase depending on how we do in the Europa League.

                          Manager's Thoughts
This month we got to test ourselves against a Liga BBVA side in the Copa del Rey, and we advanced with a 2-0 aggregate over Getafe. I was really pleased with our poise against a first division opponent and am looking forward to seeing how far our club can advance in the cup. The Liga Adelante slate threw us a surprise as we needed a 90th minute winner to escape against bottom side Bilbao Athletic 4-3. I wasn't at all happy with our defending in that contest, but the rest of our showings were solid, and we now hold a 19-point cushion over second place side Real Oviedo.

                          1/5 - vs Málaga*
                          1/9 - at Zaragoza
                          1/13 - at Málaga*
                          1/16 - vs Alavés
                          1/23 - at Osasuna
                          1/30 - vs Tenerife

*Copa del Rey - Round of 16

The Copa del Rey brings us another Liga BBVA opponent as this time we get Málaga. In fact, all of our cup opponents from here on out would be Liga BBVA clubs as we're the only Liga Adelante team left in the competition. Advancing past Málaga will be a tough ask, but our side is going to try our best. In the league slate, two big matches are this month at 6th place Real Zaragoza and home versus 4th place side Tenerife. I know it's probably unrealistic to think we will continue winning every league game, but until someone proves me wrong, that's what I expect.

so much to get through ...

SMH - Mallorca first, another flawless month although that game against Bilbao was definitely out of the norm. I bet it was really exciting coming back like that from 1-3 to score 3 times in the last 21+ minutes. Because of your dominance against Liga Adelante I mostly look forward to your Copa Del Rey matches and Malaga will definitely be a test, my boys Rosales and Juanpi will bring the noise. I look forward to the transfer news also. In Russia with Ural you're having a bit of a tougher challenge and that loss against Krasnodar sure was annoying. It's a more exciting race though and that semis matchup against Dinamo looks interesting as well. I look forward to see if you can perhaps clinch a spot in the CL.

Aquaman & Moose - it's been crazy at work and I'm a fast reader so I've only been able to review the written updates, my apologies.

Simp - You possess a dominant Hertha side and some of those results were impressive, most notably that win against Barca in CL's semis! Congrats on winning the DFB Pokal and the CL and you did an admirable job in Bundesliga!

Keano - I dig most of the signings, Bruma from PSV is a big one. Congrats on the pre-season tourney victory. A loss in the CS isn't a big deal but I was really shocked by the loss to Bournemouth even if you ran the B squad. Luckily there's plenty of season ahead of for you and I trust you'll bounce back.

Sportsfreak - I hope you're feeling better from the flu, your updates are a bit hard to follow TBH but it seems like you're doing well with Betis.

Tex - I appreciate you coming through with the update on my boys Townsend and I hope we can move past this. I don't think I realized Wigan was having such a dominant season but congrats on holding off Southend to achieve direct promotion (not sure if you noticed but SUFC did pretty well in my Newport CM too!)

My updates have always been hard to follow . That may have been my last update. I simply can't figure out an update style that works for me, but is easy enough for you guys to follow. I tried many styles in Fifa 15, but None really worked out for me.

For the time being, I'm going to stop updating my Betis CM on here. I'm going to take a break from updating. I feel Burnt out and i've only done 2 updates.

This is nothing against you guys, I just need a break is all.

Sportsie - In my opinion you should go for a style that the majority here uses. The results in bold and the scorers normally under them like
                                X 2 - 0 Y
                                Mister Z 45', 90'
Huge shame about your decision to take a break from updating, especially since you just started the career with Betis. I would try to find a suitable style but I understand if you decide to take a break. Hopefully you will return soon!

Aquaman - A draw against Bournemouth isn't the best possible start to the season but that clearance from Clark was simply amazing! The Man United draw was a very good result considering they took over 20 shots. It will be interesting to see how the season continues.

Moose - That Newcastle loss sucks a lot with you having the majority of chances. Good win against Stoke with a beautiful goal from Dybala! The team is looking very solid and you could push for a Champions League spot. In the earlier episode you managed to pull off a great win against Chelsea. It seems that the smaller teams are causing you more trouble but that is also the case with me at Hertha.

Rabbit - Oh no, you were so close! Everything was going so well and then you lost in the playoff final. That sucks, man. Like you pointed out the whole squad had a good season and I think with a couple of good signings you should be able to gain automatic promotion easily next season. Also, Bondz Moore is looking very solid in the academy. I'm looking forward to next season!

Keano - All of your signings are very good but personally I think Jeffrey Bruma was the best one, simply because of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkCGThv96Io. If that video ruined him in your eyes, I apologise. Anyway, Afobe could also become a big striker with you and he could form a deadly partnership with Iheanacho in the nearby future. You got off to a solid start in the league after a Community Shield loss against a good side. Then your form went up and down but the Man United draw is a good way to end your first month in the Premier League. Eighth in the table is also very good.

SMH - That game against Athletic was unbelievable! Amazing job to get back into the game and get the win at the end after going 3-1 down! The cup game against Malaga, together with the Athletic game, will probably be the highlight of the season so far since no-one can stop you in the league. I think you can remain unbeaten in the league this season.
