We started out quick with Banton forcing their keeper into two early saves both within the first 10 minutes. It then only took until the 20th minute for us to break through and Banton played a great ball through to Al Kuwaykibi and he easily finished it low and across the keeper into the bottom corner. Banton then added one of his own when Taylor played him through and he took one touch and then powered it into the left side of the goal. We eased off after that but Sheffield made it interesting when Fleck finished across the goal to pull them back within one. But they offered little attack after that and we were able to see out the win comfortably.
Grimsby Town 1 - 3 Chesterfield FC

It only took 5 mins for out defense to collapse and leave Lopes standing all alone in the middle of the box where he got the ball and finished with ease. O'Shea then showed off his range by adding two shots from outside of the box that both found their way into the back of the net in impressive fashion. After that we were pretty much defeated in the first half alone. We did manage a consolation goal when Summerfield's shot deflected off of Raglan and went around the keeper, but this one was a domination by Chesterfield from the start.
F.A. Cup Quarter Final
Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Nottingham Forest

What a perfect time to find our home form again. We cut through Forest like with such ease that it seemed as if they failed to field a full XI. We got it started off with Al Kuwaykibi breaking down the right with his pace and he played a ball in towards the middle where Taylor flicked it on to Sinclair for the first time finish into the bottom corner. Banton then added another just minutes later after Al Kuwaykibi played him through and he sent the ball past the keeper. With the game firmly in hand it was just icing on the cake when the referee pointed to the spot and awarded us a penalty that Taylor tucked away for our third of the night. After that it was just time to give the substitutes some run and see out the remainder of the match.
Grimsby Town 1 - Burton Albion

It took us almost the entire match, but we got the result we deserved. Burton didn't offer much of a challenge and we mascaraed around their penalty box throughout the entire match putting one shot after another towards their goal. It took a bit of magic from Daniel who was on as a substitute to finally get the ball past their keeper, but he took his chance well and nestled it into the top corner before wheeling off in celebration.
Peterborough 1 - 1 Grimsby Town

The first half was nothing but us taking shot after shot at their goal only to see it getting pushed behind or deflected for a corner. It wasn't until the second half that we finally snuck one in when Bogle took the ball out to the left to send it low across the box where Chambers was able to get to it first and knock it in. That should have been the winner but just a few minutes later Boyce decided to trap a cross out of the air rather than clear it and he had it taken away from him and Baldwin scored easily on an attempt that should have never happened.
Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Bradford City

We were pretty poor in this one actually, but all it took was just a single attack to make the difference. We took 3 shots in this entire match, and our only one on target was the decider. The first half was largely uneventful, and just 6 minutes into the second half we finally struck. Al Kuwaykibi got the ball in a hold up position at the top of the box and he turned to play Banton through on goal for the quick finish across the goal into the bottom corner.
Oldham Athletic 0 - 1 Grimsby Town

This was a good way to end the month with a win and stay atop the table with just a month left in the season. The game was pretty even in terms of chances in possession, but we had a slight edge an we turned that into the deciding goal. It actually game fairly early on and Disley played the ball out to Chambers on the counter and he used his pace to get past the defense and finished across the goal for the lead. We traded a few chances back and forth the rest of the way, but neither side offered up anything that looked too dangerous.

Checkatrade Trophy Final
Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Crewe Alexandra

This one was a complete domination and we had our way with Crewe doing whatever we wanted, especially in the first half. We started out on the front foot forcing their keeper to have to make a save as Morris got through in the box and hit it first time. Off of that corner Santos was able to get above the defense and fire a header across the goal into the top corner for the lead. Just 10 minutes later Morris struck it true this time with a long shot that will go straight into his highlight reel. Another 10 minutes after that we earned another corner and it was Santos again rising up to head it towards goal but it was deflected off the line straight to Arthur who tapped it in easily for our third. Our defense broke down for a minute in the second half and they added a consolation goal, but it was never going to matter much in the end.
Notts County 1 - 3 Grimsby Town

We have started this month with our attack in flying form. It looked shaky at first when Burke brought down a cross on the back post and then slotted inside the near post, but it wasn't long to respond with Bogle latching onto a rebound from Bolarinwa's shot and tapping it into the open goal. Chambers then added another just 4 minutes later after he used his pace to race past the defense and then finish low past the keeper into the bottom corner. The game died down some after that and it took until the second half when we finally put the finishing touches on the match with Chambers finding Wright standing in the middle of the box and he sent his shot through the defenders legs and into the bottom left. Both sides had some good chances after that, but the scoreline stayed the same when the final whistle blew.
Grimsby Town 0 - 0 Bristol Rovers

As soon as I mention how good our attack has been, we lay an egg the very next game. This was a rather boring one for the fans to watch and the result is pretty much what was deserved. Neither team showed anything that would make you think they should have won and we will have to settle for the point.
Grimsby Town 0 - 0 Walsall

This was a really disappointing performance. We executed well and created chances, and then completely fell apart when it came time to shoot. Lyle Taylor in particular was gifted two golden chances and sent both of them wide. We have to be better than that if we want to hold on to the top and win the league.
Gillingham FC 1 - 5 Grimsby Town

Now that just about makes up for a lack of goals the past 2 matches. Bogle got it started right at the beginning with a fantastic low driven shot that went off the post and in. Bennett then came up from the left back spot and played a great 1-2 and got the ball back for a well placed finished across the goal. We weren't celebrating yet though since McDonald powered a header off of a corner past the keeper to bring it within one. But we fired back almost instantly with Summerfield launching a long shot with his left foot into the top corner. The game really slowed down in the second half after that chaotic first half and it took until the 74th minute before we added another with Daniel heading down a corner and then chasing the ball down and heading it again past the keeper. Bolarinwa then added the final touch after getting the ball played through to him while he held his defender on his back and then slid it low past the keeper. This gave us some much needed momentum heading into our FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Grimsby Town

UN-BE-LEIVE-A-BLE. We went in there when no one gave us a chance and we punched them right in the mouth. We exchanged chances to start the game and then in the 30th minute we shocked everyone and took the lead when Sinclair fired from the edge of the box with a low shot into the opposite corner. Nobody had any serious chances the rest of the half and we went into the lockerroom knowing that all we had to do was hold on to what we had in our hands already. In the second half we kept applying pressure and refused to just go into a shell and let them attack us. In the 71st minute we proved just how real we were when Taylor got the ball going around the right side of the defense and fired with his right foot across the goal and into the top corner for a stunning goal. Apparently it took the slightest of deflections but with replay you can't even see the ball chance trajectory and they awarded it officially as an own goal for Vertonghen. Still we refused to retreat into our own half and we kept exchanging chances with them. In the 90th minute they won a corner and with everyone forward the ball bounced around a few times until Alderweild went up for an acrobatic overhead kick and the ball took a deflection off the inside of Thomas' leg and trickled between his legs and into the goal. The whistle blew not long after that though and we were celebrating our improbable trip to the final.
Portsmouth FC 1 - 1 Grimsby Town

It's a bit disappointing since we had the chance to lock up the title with a win, but there's still a chance we did enough depending on other results. Portsmouth opened the scoring after Willis tackled the ball away in the box and it fell straight to Smith who crossed it right away to the back post where Bennett was unmarked and finished easily. After that we had to go into scramble mode to try to bring it back but nothing was giving us much results. It wasn't until late that Chambers got some space on the right and tried to shoot but the defender recovered enough to block it and it fell to Bogle who used his left foot to slot it across the goal and into the corner for the equalizer. We tried to push for the win, but we had to settle for the draw.
Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Northampton Town

As you can tell by the lineup we fielded, the results that we needed to happen did in fact happen and we had the title locked up. With the result of this one not mattering we sent out the reserves and the young lads to let them get some run in. The ones who got it done for us though were the two more experienced players in the side and Chambers found Bolarinwa going through on goal to finish it off and score the only goal of the match. We were pretty poor on the day overall actually, but the win was a good way to thank the fans for this season.

Chelsea FC 2 - 0 Grimsby Town

Honestly, this was a lot closer than the scoreline showed. Chelsea legitimately had trouble matching our midfield and we dominated the possession game. They did barely edge just in shots and shots on goal, but it was a minimal difference. I would say the difference in this one might have come down to Courtois. The opening half saw neither side take advantage of the other, although there was some chances on both ends of the field. In the second half Willian came alive. In the 65th minute he cut through our defense with some impressive dribbling and ended up finding Batshuayi open for the easy goal to take the lead. It was Willian again who found Mikel with the time ticking down and his first shot was saved before he converted the rebound to secure the game and the trophy for the Premier League side. We put up a valiant effort, but it just wasn't enough in the end.

The B-squad stepped up BIG to get us ever closer to a league title. The worst team in the league turned out to be a tougher challenge for our youngsters than I thought they would be but fortunately we were able to manage the two-goal lead after the first 15 minutes (it looked like it was going to be much higher scoring game at that point).
Our top prospect, Luciano Wildschut, continues to be in excellent form over the last few weeks.
Champions League - Quarter Final, 1st Leg
FC Bayern - FC Twente (0-1)

Nathan Aké got loose down the left wing and broke into the box to fire an accurate pass towards Lars Veldwijk to give us the lead about a quarter of the way through the game. It had been mostly a midfield game up to that point and it pretty remained that way throughout as the game only had a total of three shots on goal (one by Bayern). It was an outstanding game at every level of the pitch during a match in which we needed that kind of performance.

N.E.C. - FC Twente (1-0)

I mentioned in the previous update that playing the B-squad against N.E.C. would be risky but I gave them the opportunity anyways due to their win in the previous league game as well as the upcoming match against Bayern. The youngsters were unable to get on the scoring sheet and were honestly outplayed as the host took 12 shots, 8 on target, and could had easily scored another goal or two. Nonetheless, we remain in good position to clinch a league title.
Champions League - Quarter Final, 2nd Leg

And with this we bow out of Champions League after Bayern edges us due to more away goals. I don't know that we could had played a better game, especially considering Bayern were more aggressive due to coming into the game with a deficit in the aggregate score. Arturo Vidal scored a ridiculous goal in the 37th minute from outside the box with the outter part of his boot making the ball fade away from Agustín Marchesín as it entered through a top corner. The game was still manageable at that point but early in the second half Kevin Diks whiffed on a challenge leaving Dias Marinho enough room to score the goal that would eventually doom us. Richairo Živković assisted Wesley Sneijder a few minutes later to even up the aggregate score but we needed another goal at that point and just couldn't come up with it. Živković came very close to bringing us glory in the 83rd minute but his crossing shot from the right went just wide.
This shot from Živković could have turned the game around for us.
League Match 32
FC Twente - SC Heerenveen (1-0)

WE ARE EREDIVISIE CHAMPIONS!!!!
Our last home game of the season saw us bounce back from a heart-breaking exit from the CL by keeping our composure against Heerenveen who were taking our punches right on the jaw but not wavering. We took a total of 12 shots, half of them on target, but remained scoreless until Juanpi broke out a moment of brilliance:

And with that we wrap up a dominant season in the Eredivisie. It wasn't quite a wire-to-wire run since we didn't get to the top of the table until September but once we got there we only continued to establish ourselves as the best team in the league and it feels great to have the hardware to show for it. From runner-ups last season to champions this season!

We turned in an absolutely dominant performance to rightfully be crowned Dutch Cup champions and with that become the first club in the Netherlands in 16 years to win both the league and cup titles in the same season! We have been in so many games that have played out this same way that we weren't even concerned when Sergio Araujo evened up the score with a penalty kick in the 59th minute. We had been so dominant up to that point that we just kept our cool and sure enough just three minutes later we were back ahead thanks to Sneijder.

In this matchup back in December we absolutely embarrassed Vitesse to the tune of a 7-1 win and they surely had that in their minds as they got their revenge. Their relentless attacking resulted in 17 shots, 11 on target, and they pushed to score even into stoppage time (we had also scored in stoppage time of the second half in the earlier matchup). It'd be easy to chalk this up to our guys sort of being loose after clinching the title but no, Vitesse really played a really good game.

Review: I made up my mind at the beginning of the season that our goal was to be Eredivisie champions, not just because I thought we had the roster to accomplish that but also because I wanted to help Sneijder go into retirement as a champion in his home nation. We were able to do even better than that by pulling of the double, becoming both league and cup champions. While it would had been perfect to get a trebble, winning the Champions League would had been an unbelievable feat considering the road we had to travel. I can confidently say there is no shame in losing to Bayern the way we did. Sneijder turned in a ridiculous season for someone walking away from the game, scoring 23 goals to go with 20 assists in 42 total appearances (League+Cup+CL) to earn team MVP honors. He easily could play three more seasons without much of a drop in his skills. The game will miss him.
Besides him other players had a really good season for us, Veldwijk most notably of course. He has become my vision of him, a deadly striker in this league. Živković has a chance to unseat him as the league's leading scorer next season so that could be something to watch for. Obviously I felt Kevin Diks had a really good season as he was noticeable on both ends of the pitch. I thought Kyle Ebecilio had a really good season but unluckily for him Ajax's Nemanja Gudelj had an even better season as a defensive midfielder. Off the bench I was beyond impressed with the loanee from Lyon, Petter Karlsson, who I just confirmed is an exciting prospect which solidifies my interest in acquiring him permanently. He scored 8 goals and had 1 assist in 15 appearances. But perhaps more exciting than him is our wonder prospect, 17-year old Luciano Wildschut who lived up to the hype especially late in the season. He looked really good in league play, gathering a 7.20 average rating to go with 3 goals and an assist to show he really has potential to be special.
I have now won league titles in my second seasons in both Turkey and the Netherlands. I consider my accomplishment of the feat in Turkey to be a bit more impressive because Kayserispor was such of an unknown team but getting it done here in the Netherlands definitely was a challenge. After spending just two seasons at Kayserispor I told myself from the get-go that I wanted to be here at Twente for at least three seasons and I was really shooting for that towards the end of the season, brainstorming about how to replace Sneijder, how to improve the roster to go deeper in the CL, and excited about the arrivals of St. Juste and Afriyie Acquah in the summer. However, a job opportunity I never foresaw becoming available, one I don't believe comes around very often, got my attention and I ended up being offered the job. After a lot of thinking I made the difficult decision of leaving Twente to embark on this new journey, surely my last stop in my globetrotter ways unless I get canned.
I hope you guys will be happy for me and support me at my next stop. Some of you might consider me a sellout but don't forget the goal in this CM is to move up the coaching ranks. I can say with confidence I've landed at one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. My resume (1 Mexican league title, 1 Turkish league title, 1 Dutch league title and 1 Dutch Cup, plust deep runs in Copa LatAm, Euro League twice, and Champions League most recently, all over the last 5 1/2 seasons) will be criticized as not good enough but I believe I can sell how the move came to take place.

I couldn't be happier to have ended up with Aston Villa as our first opponent for this season. It gave us the toughest test we could ask for to see if we belong in this league, and the answer was a resounding yes. We left all of our scoring work until late, but we were dangerous throughout the entire match. With just a few minutes left Chambers played Al Kuwaykibi through and he raced in on goal and placed the ball just under the keeper who was rushing out. Villa then had to do everything they could to pull it back and on a corner with their keeper up we cleared it away and Chambers raced past everyone to get the ball and dribble it into their goal to seal the win.

Well that was disappointing. We played well but couldn't finish, even hitting the post on two separate occasions. Kelly opened us up early with a stunning first time shot from distance to put the home side ahead. We dominated the chances after that trying to get it back but it was Leyton who ended up scoring again with our defense falling apart and McCallum got free in the middle of the box and finished it off. We ended up finally getting one back with Chambers finding Daniel for the tap in, but it was too little too late.

Preston might as well not have showed up for this one. Al Kuwaykibi is off to a hot start so far and be bagged the opener after Taylor tackled the ball away from the defender and he was able to race through and slot it past the keeper. He then added a second with a great turn around his defender on the left side of the goal and he finished low across the keeper into the bottom corner. He then set up our final one by racing down the right side and sending a cross to the back post where Taylor volleyed it into the ground and it bounced over the diving keeper. Taylor had a chance to add another off of a great ball from Al Kuwaykibi but the keeper stopped it and the slaughter ended at 3-0.

I would talk about how we were the better team, but honestly both teams were so poor that it's not even worth giving and praise towards. We blew some chances, they blew some chances, overall it was a dull performance that provided no real attacking threat to entertain the fans.
Wigan Athletic 0 - 1 Grimsby Town

The fact that their keeper won man of the match even with them losing is telling of how many shots we put on their goal. It's unbelievable that we didn't score at least one more, but we get the win and that is all that matters. Our goal came early when Taylor tried to get around the left side of the defense and fire a shot to the far post, but it was deflected by the defender in front of him and it bounced back towards his own goal and went off the post and in. It wasn't the prettiest of ways to score, but it was enough.

I'm trying out something a little different with my signings in this one actually. Rather than focusing on overalls I am trying to scout defenders and midfielders that are just physical beasts, and then getting some fast skilled players as my forwards. The idea with the defense and midfield is that I want to try to dominate the game physically and be able to push my opponents around since I feel like that is a quicker style to get the right players for than trying to get technically sound players. With a lot of these guys since they already have strong physicals, it lets me focus on working on their technical skills as well to try to bring those up to par. I feel like it's been working pretty well so far too actually.Comment

Who else would it be? Al Kuwaykibi did it again to earn us all 3 points. Banton played a great ball through to him running down the right and he used his pace to fly past the defense and slot it across the goal into the bottom corner. He was truly the difference in this one where both sides traded shots and no one held the edge in terms of controlling the match.
Brighton 1 - 2 Grimsby Town

Brighton really gave us a challenge in this one, and looking at the stats they possible could have won it, but we did just enough to take the win. Early on Otayn played Berrett through on the left and he shot across the goal to beat the keeper and open up the scoring. After half time It was Osadebe who played Al Kuwaykibi down the right and he wove his way through two defenders to get his shot off into the top corner to continue his scoring form. That ended up being an important one since just minutes later Santos gave up a penalty and Hemed slotted it away to bring it within one. We were able to hold on after that though and keep the scoreline in our favor.

Our first league loss and go figure it would be against the side that has come all the way up from League 2 along side us. They definitely deserved this one and they controlled the game from start to finish. The first half was pretty uneventful but just after the half Roberts found some space in the box and got the ball played to him and he fired a shot into the right side of the goal. We thought we had the equalizer when Morris got through on goal, but a top class saved kept us from equalizing and we didn't get a better chance after that.

How we didn't find a winner in this beats the hell out of me. This was completely one sided and yet we had to settle for just a single point. Our defense completely broke down in the first half allowing them to send a cross in the the unmarked Yokuslu and he had an easy header to put them ahead. Just before the half though we were able to apply pressure and they cut down our player in the box and the referee quickly pointed to the spot. Taylor converted it into the bottom left and we were back in it. It was a flurry of chance for us in the second half but we kept seeing everything either go wide or get saved. It was frustrating not to get the win, but we will have to move past it and focus on what is ahead of us.
Bournemouth 0 - 0 Grimsby Town
MOTM: Bennett
This was never going to be an easy one, especially with our first choice players resting, but a point is a good result. We had our chances to take this one too, but we didn't execute with our final shot. Bogle had the best chance in the second half when he got through and held his defender on his back only to send his shot wide of the post.

Boro came out and shocked us right away with Sears getting around his defender to get a free header that settled in the back of the net for the lead in the opening minutes. That put us on the back foot right away and the first half showed that we couldn't settle ourselves down. We used the half time break to calm everyone down though and went back out firing. The equalizer came with Al Kuwaykibi getting down the right and sending a low ball in that took a slight deflection off a defender and fell straight to Berrett for the easy shot into the net. Banton had a good chance to take the lead for us but he sent it wide and we had to keep looking for the winner. It came with just a couple minutes left when Al Kuwaykibi played Chambers in down the right and he had his first effort saved but he followed it up with a header that found it's way in to give us the win.
