It was a typical Pulis style 1-0 win with us having most of the chances. They were good chances too but fortunately for West Brom we wasted them all. Tim Payne was the man with the goal, running onto a pass from deep to shoot past Blanco. The game would finish with 11 (4) shots (on target) for us to their 3 (2).

MotM: Kelechi Iheanacho (CAR)

Here it was, the deciding game of the group stage. We had to win while a draw was good enough for the Bhoys. We came into the match high on confidence but we crashed back down to earth when Johansen netted an early goal. We let them in far too easily but it was a cracking finish. Not the best start but there was still time to comeback and go through. The equalizer came when Iheanacho cut in, found Afobe and he spun, shooting into the top corner. However it wasn't enough, as Lazio and Celtic went through to the knockout stages.

We earned another credible point albeit against a heavily rotated City team. We made quite a few changes ourselves with Vokes being one of them. The Welsh international getting a powerful header on target and Alli was there to volley in rebound. One of the regulars, Benzema, equalized soon after with a well taken effort. Blanco was in top form, earning MotM for his performance.

Moose will be extremely disappointed as West Ham definitely had the better chances but they just couldn't convert them. They paid for their wastefulness in front of goal when Iheanacho won a penalty off Tomkins with quick feet and Whittingham put it away with confidence. We had late chances to finish them off on the counter attack but the finishing touch wasn't there.

Rubén Blanco was MotM for the third game running, proving his importance and worth to the side. Whittingham opened the scoring with a shot across Forster into the top left corner after 25 minutes. Ince then doubled our advantage with a goal in off the post 12 minutes later.

We had a couple of early headers through Alli and Amartey but they were both cleared off the line. Gestede did hit the post for Villa beforehand in the fifth minute but that was the closest the Villains came to a goal. There were a lot of changes because of the previous match being just two days earlier.

Sam Vokes picked up an injury against Villa and will miss 8 days with a bruised elbow.

A horrible way to end the month. They opened us up for the first, Moroccan international Chamakh finishing his chance extremely well. Gayle was then given too much room inside the box to turn and shoot to add a second for the home side. After a lot of probing a mix up allowed Afobe to pounce and pull a goal back. However Amartey deflected a pass back into our area and Bannan reacted to the ball quicker than Hector to slot it home.

The month started off on a sour note, losing to West Brom and going out of the Europa League. We got back on track with a decent point against City and two consecutive wins. Villa derailed our momentum before Palace dismantled us in the final game. Overall 8 points from a possible 18 isn't great but enough for us to stay within reach of the European spots. Unfortunately we didn't progress in Europe but it now allows us to focus on the league and FA Cup.

We will be looking for nine points from the games against Sunderland, Villa and West Brom. Any sort of result from City will do while we hope to advance in the FA Cup.

Costel Pantilimon made three excellent saves to help Sunderland keep a clean sheet in their opening Premier League fixture at Leicester City.

The home side failed to register a shot on target until the end of the first half, when Jamie Vardy latched onto Gokhan Inler's through ball but failed to test the keeper adequately.

Jeremain Lens made his debut for Sunderland with a tidy performance, while Will Buckley took up a spot on the right following Adam Johnson's sacking.

Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon was at his finest with another man-of-the-match performance in the Black Cats' first home game of the season.

Norwich City failed to test the Romanian until the second half when Gary Hooper headed in Nathan Redmond's cross, the resulting goal being correctly ruled off for offside.

Steven Whittaker was sent off for the visitors midway into the second half, forcing Redmond to play as an auxiliary wing back for the remainder of the match.

Kristoffer Nordveldt's farcical own goal gave Sunderland their first win of the season. The Swansea goalkeeper failed to track Jermain Defoe's pass, getting a late touch before comically crashing into his own goal post with less than 20 minutes to play.

Earlier, Jeremain Lens rifled in his first goal in Sunderland colours before Gylfi Sigurðsson curled a fantastic free kick around the Sunderland wall.

The win puts the Black Cats tentatively in third place, with five points from three games.

Will Buckley's late equaliser rescued a point for Sunderland at Villa Park. The former Brighton forward skipped past two Aston Villa defenders before curling the ball past a helpless Brad Guzan.

In the first half, Jack Rodwell tripped Ashley Westwood outside the Sunderland box to give away a free kick. Jordan Veretout marked his debut for the Birmingham-based side with a deft curler into the top corner.

The draw means Sunderland begin their Premier League campaign undefeated in four games.

The Belgian had Spurs' best chance of the match when he failed to connect properly with Kyle Walker's sublime through ball.

Jermain Defoe scored his first goals of the season to help Sunderland rescue a point from a thrilling contest at Vitality Stadium.

Younès Kaboul was subbed off towards the end of the first half with a suspected hamstring injury that has since been revealed to be a minor bruise.

Jack Rodwell's brace overturned Kieran Agard's early opener, allowing Sunderland to cruise past Bristol City in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The former Everton man equalised by plaing a brilliant one-two with Yann M'Vila before placing the ball into the far corner, way past Frank Fielding's reach. He scored a near-identical winner with 10 minutes left, this time combining with Charis Mavrias down the right.

Bristol have now failed to win in three games in all competitions.

Manchester United proved too much for Sunderland at Old Trafford, with Javier Hernández sealing the win shortly into the second half.

Memphis Depay headed in United's opener before the break, latching onto Michael Carrick's cross after the England midfielder intercepted a hopeful long ball from John O'Shea.

Charis Mavrias claimed a late consolation goal for Sunderland, but despite pouring forward in the final stretch, the Black Cats were unable to find the equaliser that would have kept them undefeated.

Jermain Defoe scored his second brace of the season to help Sunderland claim a last-gasp win against West Ham.

The former Hammers man volleyed home just before halftime, but Dimitri Payet equalised shortly after the break to restore parity.

But it was joy that engulfed the Stadium of Light at full time as Defoe made the most of a late breakaway, heading down the left before dragging the ball away from an onrushing goalkeeper and passing into an empty net.

Salomón Rondón headed in a brace to propel West Brom to victory at home against Sunderland, pushing the visitors down the table after their second loss in three games.

Will Buckley scored in the eighth minute to give the away fans plenty to cheer about, but the Baggies' Venezuelan forward quickly cancelled out his effort with a crashing header.

Chris Brunt fooled Adam Matthews before cutting in and firing in West Brom's third, guaranteeing victory with minutes to go.

Andy Carroll's late header took West Ham into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup at Sunderland's expense.

The exciting contest at Boleyn Ground saw Mark Noble and Will Buckley both score inside five minutes. West Ham then settled but Sunderland failed to hold their shape. Enner Valencia took advantage to restore the lead before halftime.

Jack Rodwell equalised in injury time, but West Ham went straight up the other end, Noble's cross allowing Carroll to head home the winner.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

By our own standards, we've started really well to grab 13 points from our first nine matches. If we can keep going at this rate, we'll stay free of the relegation scrap and even secure our Premier League future sometimes around March. But to do that, we're going to need a big improvement soon.

Individual form has been decent. The team has been less impressive. What annoys me most is shipping eight goals in four games after conceding just twice in our first five. Those dominant defensive performances against Tottenham and West Ham are what we need to aim for until the forwards click.

As for our new players, Kaboul and Matthews have fit straight in thanks to their experiences in English football. Lens has had a much tougher time, failing to lock down a spot after modest performances both centrally and on the wing. And despite being here last season, Buckley has found a new lease of life with two goals in five starts, and he's looking very much like he could fulfill the hidden potential that I know he has.

The draw at Bournemouth showed me that we needed to change how we approach games. I ditched the 4-4-2 in favour of a holding 4-3-3, M'Vila sitting deepest in midfield with Larsson and Rodwell further up. This lets me play a front three of Defoe, Lens and Buckley – all natural goalscorers. And since Van Aanholt's return from injury, I've been able to move Kaboul back to the heart of defence beside Roberge where he belongs.

January is looking like a very big month for us. As well as offloading some deadwood, I've identified a few key players across three crucial positions who could help us go to the next level.

The first position I absolutely NEED to improve this winter is centre back. Kaboul has already risen to 81 overall and locked in his position as my best defender, but he needs an adequate partner. O'Shea and Brown aren't even being considered anymore and have been listed for transfer, while Coates and Roberge are backup level and no better. That's why I've got my eyes on one of Winston Reid, Geoff Cameron or Papiss Djilobodji. All three have strength, height and pace to go alongside wonderful defensive attributes. Most importantly, all three would be affordable in my current budget.

With his stats dropping and his physical presence almost nil, Defoe isn't the right fit to play in the middle of my front three. Danny Welbeck has the work rate, physicality, pace, athleticism and technique I need in that position. Plus, the fact that he's failed to make a single appearance for Arsenal so far tells me he's not valued at his current club. As a former Sunderland player (albeit on loan), Welbeck is a realistic target as far as I'm concerned.

Rodwell and M'Vila are incredible in midfield, the latter so effective as a deep-lying playmaker that I've decided to bring him in at any cost once his loan spell is over. But that third spot, currently occupied by free kick and crossing maestro Larsson, is still up for grabs. While he's my first choice, former Sunderland captain and local hero Jordan Henderson might be a bit out of my reach this winter, given more pressing needs elsewhere in the squad. That's why I've identified Celtic and Scotland midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven as the man I want making surging runs from deep.

The Exiles picked up right where they left off in October, pushing their winning streak to 6 games (5 in League Two). The Boro taking an early lead didn't cause any panic for the visitors who evened up the game within 10 minutes, at which point it became a gritty back-and-forth tussle. In the end, Gardner placed a very nice ball towards Arteaga who used the momentum of the pass to get past his defender and score what would be the game-winner.

It was the Venezuelan loanee out of Palermo that orchestrated to continuance of The Exiles winning streak, as Arteaga opened up the scoring and then twice assisted teammates to round up the score. Arteaga's loan will only last until the end of the season and Giovanni Marccelino surely has to be thinking about whether he'll try to permanently acquire the youngster he himself recruited to Palermo. If not, maybe the upcoming transfer window will be a good time to bring in a future replacement.

It was once again the B-squad failing to deliver a good result for The Exiles, although Marccelino was not too harsh on them in his post-game comments. "Surely you're never pleased when the game results in a defeat," the Italian skipper said. "But I thought the young lads played a lot better today then the last time out and that carries a lot of value. I'm sure they'll turn their performance around and I won't shy from continuing to play them because the squad needs to be rotated from time to time."

You have to wonder what kind of winning streak The Exiles may be carrying if they played their main squad in every game. And this defeat of The Reds was not easy in any way as the visitors earned an edge in possession (53%) and actually had more shots (6 to 5) and shots on goal (4 to 3) than Newport, but the home side was able to be effective in its attacked while shutting down their opponent and perhaps a new winning streak has started.

Plymouth Argyle is doing an excellent job of keeping up with Newport County in points, actually placing at the top of the table at this point in time, but there is very little doubt as to which team is the best in League Two: it's The Exiles. They confirmed it with a thorough defeat of York City on the road, putting 5 of their 6 shots on target while keeping the home side from putting any of their 5 shots on goal. While the offense gets a lot of credit (rightfully so), Newport's defense should not be overlooked.

It was a grind but Marccelino's squad was able to manage the game well and be opportunistic with their chances, first scoring on Taylor Moore's header off a corner kick, then sealing the deal with a breakaway from Giles of a pretty disguised pass from McKay. Opposing manager Neil Warnock gave a lot of praise to The Exiles, predicting they will see each other in the Championship League in a future not too distant.

Marccelino praised his squad's unselfishness after the game: "You know what's better than 4 goals in a game where we possibly needed all of them? 4 assists. The lads have excellent chemistry at this time and it's a lot of fun to watch them right now.

A snow storm at Britannia Stadium made this game a lot more interesting than it already was. The Exiles jumped to an early lead as Arteaga timely got to the ball after Butland had saved a dangerous shot from McKay, then Stoke evened up the score 15 minutes later with a nice bit of passing inside the box. From there, Newport created clearer chances but Butland was having a spectacular game. It went into extra time and it felt more and more as if Stoke would find a way to pull this off but then

Defensive breakdowns gave the home squad a lead they wouldn't relinquish and, on the other hand, Plymouth Argyle continues to take advantage of our hiccups to take the lead in the standings.

Playing again just two days later meant that Marccelino would once again have to trust his B squad, and the youngster finally came through for the Italian coach. Banton's cold-shower goal early on made many felt like another defeat was coming but the youngsters never gave up, and it would be academy products Jack Giles and Patrick Miller who would hook up to even up the score with about 20 minutes left, then 8 minutes later Miller's partner in the attack got into the scoring as well with a header inside the box. It was as if once Miller had broken the scoring drought of the attacking pair Collins was able to follow suit. More importantly, The Exiles collected 3 key points in their attempt to keep pace with Argyle. And yes, that was Miller's first career goal!

Review: What can I say? The performance from our top squad has just been outstanding. League 2, F.A. Cup, COC, you name it, they're getting the results. Our B squad has been holding us back a bit but the last couple of games have shown positive things including or course that come-from-behind victory vs Wycombe. Really excited for the academy graduates creating nice memories early in their careers, especially Jack Giles who just continues to be an important piece to our puzzle. It's almost surreal to be int he semis of the COC, Everton will be a very tough opponent. This upcoming transfer window could be very interesting ...

Last update you found out we had scouts out in Denmark in Norway, so let's see what new faces we have in the academy:

- Clark Gordon (CM, 64 OVR, 85-91 POT: The 16-year old from Scotland is arguably the club's top prospect at the moment, undoubtedly in the discussion. He projects as the future replacement for Mark Byrne, but as the Irishman is having a hell of a season the club is in no rush to promote this kid.
- Konsta Salo (CAM, 65 OVR, 85-91): This 17-year from Finland might edge Gordon in our evaluations if he didn't have very poor stamina, which limits him to no more than a role player for us at this time. That issue aside, the kid described by our scouts as technically gifted possess rare ball control for a teenager to go with impressive agility and acceleration and he may be on the fast track to a promotion as someone who can give Byrne a breather from time to time and perhaps strengthen the B-squad.
- Kjetil Ringdal Støvland (ST, 52 OVR, 81-94)*: This 16-year old from Norway immediately goes into the discussion for top prospect at the club and the board, Marccelino, and the whole coaching staff is elated to be working with this kid in the academy. Already 5'7" and 156lbs, Støvland is physically strong and possesses outstanding acceleration, aggression, jumping, and strenght to with stamina that might allow him to play a full 90-minutes. Developing him consistently will be key.
- Nicolai Fernandes (LB, 61 OVR, 79-94)*: Another new gem in our youth squad is this 15-year old from Denmark, undoubtedly someone who might debut for the club before his 17th birthday. Only average speed although we hope he'll continue to develop that, and a already an average defender. Youth coaches are ready to develop this talent.
- Bondz Moore (LW, 64 OVR, 81-87): Entered the season as our top remaining prospect and isn't worried about losing that status because he might be close to a promotion. He has a higher upside than Jack Giles who is thriving in his first full season. He's also grown to 5'7", 147lbs now that he turned 17 and the Englishman will undoubtedly join the senior squad at some point this season.
- Magnus Dahle (LB, 52 OVR, 74-90)*: This 17-year old from Norway is reported to have high potential but isn't too developed for his age so he'll need to hit the ground running at the academy. At 5'11" and 167lbs he's a better defender at the moment than an offensive asset.
- Gary Woods (CM, 53 OVR, 80-86: This 17-year old is another Scottish gem. Left-footed and technically gifted, he stands at 6'0" and 174lbs. He needs to hit the ground running in the academy but he's another exciting prospect.
- Ben Potter (LM, 60 OVR, 78-84): The speedster from England recently turned 17 years old and has grown to 7 inches (to 5'9") and added 15 pounds to his frame (up to 154lbs). Once promoted he may struggle to find regular PT behind Giles and Moore but we'll figure something out.
- David Fox (RM, 55 OVR, 78-84): One of the youngest members of the youth squad is this 15-year old form Scotland standing at 5 feet tall and 125lbs. Crazy agile, our scouts are very intrigued by how much progress he can show if he commits for a couple of years in our academy.
- Cristiano Dall'Oglio (CDM, 56 OVR, 77-83): The lone Italian prospect in our academy recently turned 17 years old and now stands at a robust 6'3" and 167lbs. This defensive-minded midfielder is destined to be Gary Gardner's backup at CDM and has been working hard for a promotion he may earn sooner than later.
- Patrick Brennan (LW, 50 OVR, 75-81): This Irish prospect recently turned 16 years old and has grown to 5'2", 150lbs. He continues to show flashes but still needs a lot of development.
- Marc Fox (CAM, 52 OVR, 72-78): This 17-year old from Scotland is described by scouts as a playmaker. He may be a late bloomer but we look forward to grooming him.

Seeings thats your 10 points clear of Mansfield I think you can easily achieve promotion!,1 point off the top so defenitly will be a race to the end! Clarke Gordon is obviously am interesting prospect as is Gary Woods, Good Luck against Everton, no doubt some of that extra money for making it that far in the Capitol One Cup will help!

Sunderland scored twice in three minutes to win at Everton in the Premier League on the back of their cup loss to West Ham.

Jack Rodwell headed in the opener as Tim Howard came off his line but missed the ball. Soon after, Patrick van Aanholt cut inside and shot straight at Howard, who parried straight back to the Dutchman to slot home.

Kevin Mirallas scored a spectacular volley to deny Sunderland what would have been a well-deserved clean sheet.

Will Buckley scored an incredible volley in the 84th minute to help Sunderland beat Newcastle at home in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Papiss Cissé failed to convert several chances in the first half, but Mike Williamson headed the Magpies into the lead shortly into the second half.

Jermain Defoe equalised from a contentious penalty after Chancel Mbemba was adjudged to have fouled the Englishman just inside the box, before Buckley's 25-yard volley wrapped up the points for Sunderland.

Graziano Pellè netted his ninth league goal, helping Southampton come from behind to win at the Stadium of Light in rainy conditions.

Duncan Watmore scored his first of the season to give Sunderland the lead going into the break, but Cuco Martina equalised midway through the second half with a powerful header.

In the final minute of injury time, Pellè put his head to the end of Jay Rodriguez's cross to seal the win for the visiting Saints.

Connor Wickham evaded four sliding tackles to score the winner as Crystal Palace beat Sunderland at home.

Steven Fletcher, making his first start of the season, scored less than 10 minutes into proceedings after being teed up by Duncan Watmore. Early in the second half, Jason Puncheon equalised with a ferocious shot that sent the ball in off the post.

The significance of Wickham's late winner is compounded by the fact that Sunderland deemed him surplus to requirements this summer.

Jeremain Lens scored the only goal of the match as Sunderland hosted and defeated Stoke City.

In a match of attrition in soaking wet conditions at the Stadium of Light, four Sunderland players and five from Stoke were booked for challenges that ranged from reckless to malicious.

Lens managed to score the winner for the home side, holding off two highly aggressive markers before tricking Jack Butland with a dummy shot, allowing him to pass into an empty net.

Danny Welbeck scored twice against Sunderland to help Arsenal maintain momentum in their title challenge.

Arsène Wenger rested several key players, including Olivier Giroud and Per Mertesacker, but Arsenal still had enough firepower. Sunderland were helpless in front of the home side's intensity, failing to register a single shot on target across 90 minutes.

The win makes it six on the trot for the Gunners, who are now level on points with undefeated Chelsea, who have two games in hand.

Jeremain Lens scored a hat-trick as Sunderland put five past a helpless Watford.

Will Buckley opened the scoring with a sumptuous finish before Lens doubled the lead with a powerful, rising shot. Jermain Defoe quickly added to Watford's woes, making it 3-0 with a simple tap-in from an Adam Matthews cross.

Allan Nyom was sent off in the 63rd minute for a two-footed challenge on Lens, allowing the Dutchman room down the left to cut in and score two more.

Nemanja Matić poked in the winner against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge to extend Chelsea's undefeated streak.

In what is being called the most exciting match of the season thus far, chances were plenty at both ends. Thibaut Courtois and Costel Pantilimon made several exquisite saves to stop the score from being as high as 4-4 at halftime.

Eden Hazard's late introduction proved the catalyst, the Belgian evading Adam Matthews before teeing up Matić for the only converted chance all match.

Sergio Agüero's early free kick proved the decider as Manchester City claimed a narrow home victory against a highly attacking Sunderland eleven.

The visitors registered 19 attempts on goal with 11 of them on target, forcing Willy Caballero to make numerous outstanding saves to maintain his clean sheet.

Lynden Gooch made his debut for Sunderland, starting in the hole behind Steven Fletcher. He played admirably, putting three of his five shots on target and completing 22 of his 25 passes.

Jack Rodwell scored with a diving header to ensure victory for Sunderland against Liverpool.

Jeremain Lens had put the home side 1-0 up when he whipped in a fizzing cross. Mamadou Sakho sent the ball straight up, and Rodwell timed his dive to evade his clearance and nod the ball in.

And with Younès Kaboul receiving treatment on the sideline, Christian Benteke powered through Sunderland's defence to score an unstoppable goal, setting up a nervy end to a thrilling contest.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

At the end of October, I said we would need to start putting points on the board as quickly as possible. We've managed to do that, and after half the season under our belts, we're comfortably in sixth position with 28 points.

Our success over the last few weeks can be attributed to a couple of key decisions. Moving to an attacking 4-3-3 has helped immensely, though we still lack a natural attacking midfielder on our books. Mackay-Steven may not be Payet or Mata, but I've seen the scouting report and I'm sure he will be the perfect addition to our team and let Defoe stay in the front three.

Another big reason for our recent success has been the emergence of Lens as a key player. His performance against Watford set the ball rolling, and he was immense against Chelsea, City and Liverpool, picking up ratings of 8.2, 8.8 and 9.2 in succession. He's saved me a huge summer headache and probably more than a few million pounds. Currently on six goals, I expect him to finish with at least double that if his form keeps going the way it is.

I know I said Coates would never amount to anything more than backup, and while I still want to add to my defensive depth in January, he's been immense over the last couple of months. Ever since he came in for Roberge ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby, he's locked down that spot next to Kaboul despite his lack of pace or athleticism. Now we'll be looking to add a central defender or serious quality in the upcoming transfer window.

Fletcher has signed a one-year extension to his existing deal, and Watmore has been rewarded for his performances so far with a four-year extension that takes him to £10,000 per week. I also want to extend and improve Lynden Gooch's current deal by the end of the season, once he's been given more games to impress the way he did against Manchester City.

Iñaki Williams - £3.5 million from Athletic Bilbao

The 22 year old winger arrives from the Basque side in a cut price deal as there was only six months remaining on his contract. Iñaki expressed his desire to make the move to the Premier League and we were more than happy to take the versatile forward. He is a prime athlete with incredible pace and strength to go along with it. He has the potential to become one of the best players in the game. Most likely Iñaki will operate on the left while, if needs be, he can deployed up front.

Dele Alli - £2.6 million from Tottenham

When Dele's loan deal expired we made no hesitation in turning the deal into a permanent one for the talented midfielder. Spurs knew they couldn't offer the 20 year old the game time he wanted so they were willingly to let him leave once their valuation was met. With Chalobah's loan ended as well, Alli will see more matches than he did previously. Dele gives us options in midfield as he can operate in a box to box role, in the hole or as a sitting midfielder.

Aaron Cousins - Promoted from Youth Academy
(72 Ovr)

The only problem with this extremely talented goalkeeper is height of 5'11". The scouts have however labeled the 17 year old as someone that can become one of the best keepers in world football in the future so he will definitely get a chance to prove himself. He is firmly our second choice keeper behind Blanco.

Alex Hines - Promoted from Youth Academy

Amid fears of another player being poached from the youth setup, we decided to offer the 17 year old left fullback a first team contract with the view to him developing on loan for the next couple of seasons.

Demarai Thomas - Promoted from Youth Academy
(53 Ovr)

The English centre back has bags of potential and is also very versatile, being able to play at left back and also in the middle of the park. At 17 he won't be the first name on the team sheet so we will look to sort out a loan move for him this window in order to get him important game time. Failing that we will try to incorporate him into our plans one way or another.

Chris Crooks - Promoted from Youth Academy
(52 OVR)

Chris is the fourth player to be promoted to the first team this season and is a tall (6'0"), marauding midfielder with attacking instincts. Again we will look to send him to a lower league side so he can improve on his talents and resolve any weaknesses.

Denis Suarez - Pre-Contract from Sevilla

Denis was no doubt one of our best deals of this window. A former Manchester City youth, the midfielder joined Barcelona in August 2013 where he spent the season with the B side before joining Sevilla on loan for the 2014-15 campaign where he has remained until now. The 23 year old is a hugely talented player and has a lot potential to get even better in the years to come. He will certainly up our level of quality in the final third and take on Peter Whittingham's mantle of the main creative presence in the forward line.

Aron and Federico were both unhappy with their game time and expressed desires to move on. Federico moved back to his native Italy with Palmero while Aron has dropped back down to the Championship where he more able to compete.

Jonathan Williams - Loan from Crystal Palace Expired

The club felt we had enough cover in midfield so neither Jonathan's nor Nathaniel's loan deals were renewed. Jonathan's more because of his proneness to injuries rather than a lack of ability.

It was a comfortable win against an understandably weaker side. Kenendy opened the scoring, getting down the side of Wimbledon's back three and shooting across the keeper. He then turned provider, Amartey heading the corner straight into the top left corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Reeves did get a goal back after a bit of pinball inside our box but Kadeem Harris, back from his loan, dribbled into the Dons' area and put it on a plate for Macheda to restore our two goal lead.

Three days later we welcomed the Black Cats and got off to the best possible start when Whittingham crept in at the back post to slide in Phillips' low cross. In the second half, Afobe almost got the second but his back heel unfortunately struck the post. Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole equalized on 73 minutes with a strong first time effort meaning the points were shared.

Vokes can't seem to buy a goal at the moment. He hit the post with a point blank header early on and then sent another one wide soon after. Bony hit the post for City from long range before a midfield battle ensued. The winner came 8 minutes from time when Benzema reacted quicker to Otamendi's deflected shot off Bruma to tuck the ball away and seal the three points.

It took a piece of quality to unlock a stubborn Albion defence and it came in the form of a 31 yard free kick from none other than Whittingham. It did take a slight deflection off of Lambert in the wall but Rose would have had no chance either way. Iñaki Williams made his debut after his transfer from Bilbao and was steady throughout, nothing special but not terrible. There were definitely some signs of what he can do. Hector and Bruma were both immense near the end, clearing and heading balls away as West Brom bombarded our area looking for the equalizer which never materialized.

We rotated the side completely with debuts for Cousins, Crooks, Thomas and Hines, all four being youth players. They failed to breach the resolute League One team and so we will have to face off again in a replay next month.

MotM: Brad Guzan (AVL)

Villa snatched the win right at the death with a ridiculous volley from substitute Jordan Ayew. Özbiliz swung in a cross to the back stick and Ayew peeled off Fabio to strike the ball across Blanco and in off the post. This was a sucker punch as we were arguably the better side but didn't create that many clear cut opportunities, when we did Guzan was there to save them.

It wasn't a great month in league terms, only picking up four points from an available twelve while the FA Cup game wasn't much better, failing to score against Crewe, a League One side. We breezed past Wimbledon while Villa snatched that win right at the death so there's nothing much to be done about that. 8th is a respectable position and a really good achievement, given that we were only promoted this season. We just need to keep it up from now until the end of the season.

Next month sees us play our FA Cup replay against Crewe, a game we should win this time around. In the league we have three tough games against 5th, 7th and 3rd respectively. We'll do well to get at least two points out of those games and Newcastle is the one we are targeting for three points.

Again we start the month with a deserved loss. We gave the ball away numerous times and were lucky to only concede one goal to the worst offensive team in the league. Noble’s goal was a good shot though that went upper 90 after he intercepted a poor pass from Tiote and then beat Coloccini and shot from 20 yards out with his weak foot.

MOTM Pantilimon (WAT)

We came away with the win in the end. Pantilimon man will be disappointed to have conceded in the dying seconds of the match to miss out on important points but he was very unlucky after a phenomenal match. We looked good in the beginning when Doumbia latched onto a through ball played by Saivet and he had an easy finish under the huge Romanin. Deeney would equalize quite unexpectedly when Coloccini was caught out of position which left a wide open space for Deeney to be played through and smash past Krul. We didn’t give up though and Perez, making his first BPL appearance for Doumbia who was subbed off in the 81’, scored a goal by falling on the ball. I guess? I’m not sure how to describe his first Premier League goal but it it one to remember.

A boring first half but it was completely turned around in the second half. Early on Kane stole the ball off Taylor and bared down on goal and slotted past Krul with easy. Just past the hour mark Townsend scored against his former club, he was able to cut across Danny Rose and shoot past Vorm with a well placed strike to the top corner. Perez would score the winner in the 77’ when Krul would catch a corner and boot it up to Perez who ran past the last defender and scored a simple goal to beat Tottenham.

Another win against a top side. Chelsea didn’t play very well and that showed when they tried to play out of the back and Tiote was able to intercept and play his fellow county man through on goal and slotted past Courtois. Wijnaldum is the first person to score twice in one game for us this season. His first goal came when Haidara played played him through and cut in and finessed to the far post. He scored again in the 80’ we he won the ball off a Chelsea defender and hit it near post. They pulled one back though in the dying minutes when Fabregas chested a ball down and volleyed past Krul.

My Thoughts:

Being in second is quite the surprise but at the same time the squad has been playing well and most of the top teams that we have played have been in poor form or missing players when we played. We have a tough match against Manchester City next month as well as a game against our rivals Sunderland. Both games are important. The game against City will be the toughest game we have played so far and will be a real test but I think we can do good and at least get a tie.
