Neville brings in new assistant
Since the retirement of Roy Hodgson after Euro 2016 the English national team has been under the stewardship of former Manchester United and England fullback Gary Neville. Hodgson's assistant took over the role after a rather unsuccessful tenure in charge of Spanish side Valencia, in which he was sacked merely four months after taking the job.
He has had a better time of it with the national team however, guiding them to the top of their World Cup qualifying group with eight games played ahead of Portugal on goal difference. They have already both secured a place in next year's tournament, with Poland seven points behind the two European giants. But England's problem has never been in getting to major tournaments but rather underperforming on the big stage. The signs are promising that this England side can improve on previous performances and progress to possibly the semi finals in Russia.
There has been a slight reshuffle in Neville's coaching staff, his brother Phil leaving to take on the manager's job at Everton after Roberto Martinez' dismissal last week. Phil's replacement is a somewhat surprising one, Cardiff City manager Keano Sixteen. Keano led Cardiff to promotion in 2015-16 and then a respectable sixth placed finish in 2016-17. This season hasn't gotten off to the greatest of starts for the Irishman but Gary Neville obviously feels that he can add something a little bit different to the England setup and has brought him on board in time for the final two qualifiers against Portugal and Switzerland.
