Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

    Season 1

    The Sky Blues

    February 2016

Shrewsbury, the last time we faced them it ended in a 0-0 draw. This time we are home though, and we expect much more than that. They are 22nd in league play and only 1 point ahead of last place Swindon. Shrewsbury run a 5-3-2 formation and even though it hasn't been working for them, they stick with it. As usual against a 5-3-2 we send out a 4-5-1 with the intention of attacking through the wings. Cole is back in the lineup as well as Jones out on the right wing. Conor Thomas completes the personnel changes coming in for Andy Rose in the middle.

    Coventry City 0 - 1 Shrewsbury FC
    SHR - Akpa Akpro 29'
    MOTM: Burton

Unbelievable. For some reason we just cannot score on Shrewsbury. We put 7 shots on their goal, and Callum Burton turned each one of them away. A first half header by Akpa Akpro off of a free kick was all it took to make the difference and we let them come into our stadium and embarrass us. The frustrating part is with them in the relegation zone we may not get another chance to make up for this one any time in the near future.

Alright I'm pissed. I can't stand losing to a relegation candidate, especially when we are at the opposite end sitting on top of the table. These boys need to take it out on the next opponent, and the lucky team is Rochdale. They are in the bottom half, and even though we are going into their stadium, I expect nothing less than a win. Rochdale use a 4-2-3-1 so we switch back to our 4-3-2-1 that we've used many times this season and we've had a lot of success with it. Maddison is back in the XI and he has finally found his form after struggling for a good portion of the first half of the season and Lameiras fills in on the right wing as well. Gadzhev fills in for the injured Vincelot who will be out 3 weeks, and we are ready for this one. Our goal is to control the midfield and dominate every part of the game. Don't let me down.

    Rochdale AFC 0 - 0 Coventry City
    MOTM: Leutwiler

Okay that's it, back to the basics. Not only did we not win this one, we didn't score once again. And to top it all off, we were lucky to even get a point. Rochdale out possessed us, they out shot us, but luckily our keeper didn't fall asleep along with our supporters watching this one and he salvaged a point for us. We definitely need to make some changes before we end up slipping down the table. There are lofty expectations in front of us, and I refuse to let anyone down.

Training as all business these past few days. I broke it down, and reigned everyone's focus in. We got too used to the top of the table, and even though we are still there, it was obvious we got too used to it. If we don't get back to what we've done all season here we can lose that spot. Walsall, in Ricoh Arena, 4-5-1 against their 4-4-1-1. We are going to keep this one simple. Win the midfield, win the game.

    Coventry City 0 - 0 Walsall FC
    MOTM: Leutwiler

I just don't know anymore. 3 straight matches we haven't scored. 2 of those were on our own field. It's embarrassing, but at this point I'm at a loss for how to fix it. Our saving grace has been our back line and Leutwiler in goal. I laid out a simple ultimatum, win the midfield, win the game. We lost the midfield and it shouldn't be a surprise that this was the result.

This is not a good time to be out of form. The F.A. Cup round of 16 is knocking on the door, and our opponent is Premier League side, Swansea. We were fortunate enough to get this one at home, but that has clearly been far from a fortress lately as our scoring troubles continue. Armstrong has been largely missing in action lately and this might be his last chance to get it going before we have to resort to other options at forward for now. Swansea run that 4-2-3-1 that is so popular in the top division, and we send out our usual 4-3-2-1 to fight against it. How I wish we had Vincelot in the lineup to keep us organized, but his injury woes have been a story of it's own this season.

    F.A. Cup Round of 16
    Coventry City 0 - 0 Swansea City
    MOTM: Leutwiler

At this point I'm starting to wonder if we will ever score again. Another scoreless affair, and our crowd has resorted to bringing pillows with them to each match and I can't say I blame them. Once again the silver lining was we kept a clean sheet of our own, but that silver lining is sure losing it's shine pretty quickly.

Back to league play, and it's been 4 matches straight since we lost saw a goal. This one comes against Bradford City who are having a perfectly average season sitting at 15th in the table. They usually send out a flat 4-4-2 so we switch up our midfield into a 4-2-3-1 and make some changes throughout. The most noticeable one was one that I warned of and that is Armstrong sitting this one out. When a striker can't score you begin to wonder why he's even out there. Let's see if any of our other guys can make anything happen.

    Coventry City 2 - 0 Bradford City
    COV - Thomas 75', Fortune 90'
    MOTM: Thomas

We did it! Praise the Lord we did it! We scored, TWICE! Romaine Vincelot returned from his injury and subbed on in the 71st minute, and just 4 minutes later we broke our drought with a goal from Conor Thomas. He truly is our talisman on the field. And then we had a striker score to wrap it all up in the 90th minute. We disturbed the naps of all the fans who had started coming to the matches for some rest, but I don't care, please let this be the start of a new run!

We broke the drought, now we have to avoid starting a new one. Off we go to Peterborough who are 10th and still fighting to climb into a playoff spot. They run a 4-4-2 wide diamond and we move back to a 4-3-2-1 for this one. Vincelot is making his full return to the starting XI and we are sending Joe Cole back out to see if he can get back into the swing of things as well. Fortune, one of our goal scorers from last match enters into the XI and Armstrong finds himself sitting on the bench for this one as we see if Fortune can turn in a second performance in a row or not.

    Peterborough United 0 - 2 Coventry City
    COV - Murphy 34', Fortune 37'
    MOTM: Cole

Another two goal performance and it's nice to know that last game wasn't just a fluke. Murphy got it going with a bit of luck and persistence as the ball kept falling back to him as he cut into the box and his shot even hit the keeper but still went in. Fortune rewarded my faith in giving him a starting spot when he added a second goal in as many games with a nice shot to beat the keeper. Joe Cole was instrumental all match and actually set up both of the goals. After that it was smooth sailing to see out the rest of the match and we keep our grip on the top of the table.

It feels like we are finally on the right track again, and we managed to pull it back together just in time to avoid dropping from the top of the table. Next up we are away to Port Vale. They run an odd 5-3-2 and we send out a 4-5-1 to match their midfield while keeping our wingers in play. The plan will be for the wingers to focus on catching their wingbacks out of position and causing havoc of their own when given the chance. Fortune keeps his place up front after two straight matches putting the ball in the net, and we make a few other changes in the XI as we look to keep our players fresh for our upcoming Capital One Cup final against Leicester.

    Port Vale 0 - 4 Coventry City
    COV - Rose 33', 85', Maddison 43', Fortune 61'
    MOTM: Rose

Now that's how you want to leave it heading into a cup final. We flat out destroyed them. Rose got it started in the first half with a great goal that hit off the crossbar and in. He then set up Maddison for the second just before the half ended. Fortune added his third goal in as many games as he continues to cement his place over Armstrong, and then Rose wrapped it all up with his second of the night to cap off his man of the match performance. I can't find one thing to fault in this performance, and now our confidence is officially back just in time to face Leicester with some silverware on the line.

The Capital One Cup final. Here we are, against all odds. A third division side against a Premier league club waiting to roll us over and take the trophy. We won't go that easily though. We proved it against Liverpool, and we are ready to prove it again. We have been very up and down this month, but we come into this match having scored 8 goals over the past 3 matches. Leicester will likely field a flat 4-4-2, and we move to a 4-2-3-1 to keep the numbers advantage in the midfield while keeping two holding midfielders to take care of their 2 forwards. Fortune has given me no reason to drop him, and Joe Cole comes back into the lineup to sit in the hole behind him. Murphy and Lameiras will be out on the wings, and our captain Vincelot will partner with Andy Rose in the holding positions. The back line gets 1 change and that is Andy Taylor coming back in for the injured Stokes. This is it, this is our time. Can we finish this magical run of ours?

    Youth Academy

The trip to Scotland has wrapped up and we have ended up with 3 new players in our academy a a result. We already discussed Greg Fox, and this month we added Jamie Gordon and Michael Harkins into the mix. Gordon is a right sided midfielder and Harkins is a central midfielder. Both of these kids seem like they have loads of potential, at least according to our scout. So we will be watching them to make sure that he wasn't just blowing a bunch of hot air.

Jamie Gordon - 17 years old, Scotland, RM, 53 OVR, 68-94 POT
Greg Fox - 17 years old, Scotland, CB, 51 OVR, 78-94 POT
Matthew Cox - 16 years old, England, LB, 52 OVR, 68-76 POT
Michael Harkins - 15 years old, Scotland, CM, 40 OVR, 75-94 POT
    Amari'i Seager - 15 years old, England, CB, 59 OVR, 70-74 POT

So my next career is sorted. I'll be taking over Paris FC in Ligue 2 with a financial takeover in the season right after gaining promotion to Ligue 1. The twist is I can only sign players from my home region of the UK and Francophone countries. I'm making an exception to this rule in that loan signings can be from any nation, but I can bring in no more than three players on loan at any given time. I'm not sticking to any hard and fast rules, but I will aim for 10 French players in a squad of 25 (40%). I think that's a good percentage.

        Nations for Signings

        England
        Scotland
        Wales

        France
        Canada
        Congo
        Belgium
        Burkina Faso
        Cameroon
        Equatorial Guinea
        Gabon
        Ivory Coast
        Mali
        Senegal
        Switzerland
        Togo

PS: Chico, tell him he's a good boy already!

Tex - First of all, I really like how much tactical discussion you put into this Coventry career! It's interesting to see how your tactics vary depending on the opponent. February was a tough month for you with that winless streak at the beginning but luckily you managed to turn it around towards the end. Shame about losing in the Capital One Cup final but just reaching it and beating Liverpool on the way is huge! Also, Andoh looks like a solid Bosman signing. Good luck in the last couple of months of the season!

Chico - Oh no, that's awful! I can't believe he did that to you, especially considering how much you were enjoying the Luton career. Are you planning to buy another copy of the game or are you just going to wait for FIFA 17? #PrayForChico

Sportsie - Huge congratulations on winning the league and the Champions League! Shame about the loss in the Copa del Rey final but I'm sure you will come back stronger next season and win that proper treble!

Rabbit - Kayseri: You were getting some very good results right up until that Fenerbahce loss in February, and the Napoli game right after it was jaw-dropping. I was certain that you would go through thanks to that 3-1 win in the first leg, but man, was I wrong and shocked. It was also unfortunate that you couldn't get good results in March to keep you at the top of the table. I still believe in you, though! Go win that league title!

Newport: Dude, amazing job beating Manchester City in the FA Cup! Well done hammering Blackburn, too, but those two wins are the only things worth mentioning because the rest of your results were quite poor as you mentioned. Selling Thuram has really shaken things up. As far as the league table goes, Burnley seem to have run away with the title but you can still finish in second and gain automatic promotion.

Cabee - I'd say you had a great first season with Newcastle! Getting them three points away from the league title and winning both the Europa League and the Capital One Cup is very impressive. Shame about Exeter's league position at the end, though.

Your transfer window was quite busy as always and the signings that really caught my eye are Lorentzson AKA Ibra II and Balde Diao Keita. I'm just a bit surprised that you didn't sign a top defender in the window. Any reason for that? Also, I absolutely loved the Transfer Talk section and I really hope you do it again! Brilliant work!

Keano - I can't believe you are doing this to us again! No updates from you for another two weeks? Not cool. Jk, have a fun vacation!

Moose - What a horrible own goal against Villa! If I were you, I would have taken Butland off right after that goal instead of the third one haha It sucks that you lost that game, especially since you dominated it. A draw against Everton isn't too great of a result, either. It's really impressive that you keep uploading videos even though you are out of town!

          SMH -
Get that Kuban Krasnodar career running and finish updating on the season with Avellino!

Terp - Is the Sociedad career happening?

Indi - Good luck with Paris FC!

That should be everything. I'm very sorry if I missed someone!

          --

I have finished March and I've played the first game of April with Stuttgart. A little spoiler: we have failed to drop many points and we have secured a spot in the Europa League next season.

I hope to get a few seasons in to Yeovil at least before 17 comes out at the end of September. I was thinking we could make a discord server for us in this thread so we can chat about what is going on in our CM's

“In wake of a 19th place finish in league 2 this year, Yeovil Town have announced the sacking of manager Darren Way and are looking into potential managerial candidates.”

“I’ve only been out of Football for a few years and I already have my professional management license. Sounds crazy doesn't it? After 2 years in France coaching Monaco to success I felt like I needed to change things up and go to a lesser club and try to take them to glory. Now you might call me insane for even thinking of doing such a thing. However, it's not who you manage that matters, it's where you take them. Two prime examples of this in recent years are Burton Albion and Brentford in England. Both were in the lower parts of league football and have risen to greater lengths. That's what I plan to do with whatever club I end up at. I have applied for various Managerial Vacancies in a few countries and whatever team wants me will get my talents as manager.”

                Introductory Press Conference:

Chairman: “Before I introduce the new manager for you guys I must say that the club has full faith in his managerial skills even if he's only been in management for a short period. I hereby present to you the new manager of Yeovil Town. David Beckham!

Reporter: Mr. Beckham, why Yeovil Town instead of a Premier League squad?

Beckham: As you all know I had success straight away at Monaco, I didn't want success right away. I want to gradually earn that success and hopefully bring the squad to success.

Reporter: Any plans for the Transfer Market.

Beckham: You will find that out at a later date.

“First game of the season, we start out against a strong Bristol Rovers squad. The game starts out even on both sides. Both teams are getting chances.

Rory Gaffney gets one past our keeper 18 minutes in on a screamer from just outside the box.

One of our loanees comes in clutch a few minutes later and grabs the equalizer Leonardo Suarez getting his first goal of the campaign.

Literally nothing happens the rest of the 1st half but Gaffney gets his 2nd goal in the second half after we give the ball away in our half.

That would be the last goal either side gets as Bristol Rovers takes us down 2-1."

“First Cup game of the year and what a bounceback this was after losing to Bristol Rovers in the League.

This was a dominant performance by the lads as Leroy Lita gets a brace and Francôis Zoko gets his first goal of the season.

Della Valle gets one back for Crewe but at that point there was no coming back.”

                Wycombe vs Yeovil Town

                6' Leroy Lita
                10' Paris Cowan-Hall
                54' Leroy Lita
                71' Stephen Mcginn
                90'+2 Valentin Vada
                3-2 Win

“This was an absolute Thriller of a game. Leroy Lita continues his form from the cup tie and gets us ahead 6 minutes in. 4 minutes later Paris Cowan-Hall grabs the equalizer.
The rest of the first half was filled with constant chances at both ends. In the second half we get our second as Leroy Lita gets his second goal of the game. Later in the second half Stephen Mcginn Equalizes for Wycombe on a header from a corner kick. The rest of the game was tense as ever. I thought it was all over until Valentin Vada decides to show what he can do and bangs one in off the far post to pretty much steal that game in added time.”

                Yeovil Town vs Newport County

                68' Leonardo Suarez

                1-0 Win

“This game was marked on the calendar when the schedule was released. One of my old pals rabbit comes to town to take on my new squad. His squad really gave us there all. We held each other scoreless through the first half but that's not to say there wasn't anything to write home about oh hell no. Each of our teams both got penalties and neither were converted. Ours went sky high and theirs hit the near post and went out. After that crazy first half it was back and forth through the first 20 minutes of the second half. In the 67’ however we nick the ball off one of their midfielders and break out on the counter. Leonardo Suarez delivers his second goal in the league campaign. Newport came to play but ultimately lost 1-0 in a game that was hotly contested.

                Capital One Cup R2

                Burnley vs Yeovil Town

                10' Liam Shepard(OG)
                45' Valentin Vada
                71' Wes Fogden
                85' Sam Vokes
                88' Francôis Zoko
                90' Andre Gray
                120+1 Francôis Zoko
                4-3 Win after ET

“Turf Moor, not the place I’d like to have to play this early in the cup. To say this game was shocking is an understatement. They take the lead early off an Own Goal. Normally that wouldn't bug me but against a team like Burnley our guys can't afford to make mistakes like that. We got our redemption right before half time however as Valentin Vada takes a shot from 35 yards out and drills it into the top right corner. Going into halftime I'm thinking that could've been worse than it is. Not much really happens for 20 minutes in the second half until we start on the attack and we eventually get rewarded with a goal from stand in CAM Wes Fogden. The final 10 minutes of the game had me wanting to rip my hair out. The defense was nowhere to be found but our Forwards bailed us out big time. 3 goals in 5 minutes is absolutely insane. They equalize on the final attack of the 90 and I'm furious. We go to extra time and literally nothing happens until we go on the break in added time in the second half of ET. Needless to say we sent Burnley home in shambles but that's not without a attacking spectacle.

                Portsmouth vs Yeovil Town

                7' Michael Doyle
                12' Ryan Bird
                53' Conor Wilkinson
                89' Francôis Zoko

                2-2 Draw
“Fratton Park. Storied ground of Portsmouth FC. A ground for the history books. Coming here to face Pompey is no easy task. They gave us everything and then some. I'm pretty content with a draw in this game. Having to rotate the side after the cup tie 2 days earlier wasn't optimal but it didn't cost us too much as we still got a point from the affair.”

It's nice to see some of you guys in the fantasy football league! It'll be interesting to see how everyone does!

Thanks! All in all, I'm quite happy with how I did too but we'd always have hoped for the big BPL win. EA ruined Exeter! I warned them not to too! Luckily, they're playing a lot better in the new season but you'll see that in my post coming up. :P Yeah, Keita and Lorentzson were definitely the signings I was really excited for because they both look like game-changers and we got 'em pretty cheap as well.

Your question's a good one and I think it was mainly because I was focusing on depth for my back line instead of forking out of a small budget to get a top defender. I was in ongoing negotiations with a few high-profile defenders but they all collapsed but i've saved up enough money to search for a better defender(s) in the January transfer window.

I'm so happy you and keano liked the transfer talk section!

It was the same around this time last year I believe. Everyone seems to start phasing out in the couple months before the new title is released, and then there is a revival after that.

There are times when I feel it's too hard to even keep up lol.

My goal for '17 is to play (and update) with Arsenal for 15 seasons.

I'm trying to get bits and pieces from everyone's CMs to put mine together in a way that's easy to follow, thorough, but not overwhelmingly time consuming.

I plan to mix up the format with short highlight videos, photos, brief monthly write ups, player profiles, and maybe some Google docs (lol).

This thread is great and I can't wait for 17!

The Exiles are far from being in form but all they needed in this game was one moment of brilliance between Gordon and Ambrose plus a strong outing from its defense to come away with a key victory against Brentford, who were looking to avenge their late lost to Newport County not too long ago in the F.A. Cup. Gordon's brilliance will be on hold for at least a couple of weeks following a knee injury right before the half.

                              Donnellan 90+'

"The Norwegian Tank" came out of his shell to score a couple of first half goals to lead The Exiles to another victory, this one on the road, as they re-affirmed their strange dominance over the Baggies this season. The home team was unable to come anywhere close to avenging an embarrassing 0-6 loss at Rodney Parade earlier this season and Newport County surely must have a mental edge over West Brom should they meet in the playoffs for promotion.

Ince 20' (Bruised elbow, out 8 days)

Ruslan Malinovskyi shook free on a corner kick to head the ball home and that would be all the visitors would need to spoil the beginning of a winning streak by The Exiles. Ipswich clamped down on defense following the early score and frustrated Newport County, allowing just 4 shots (1 on target). To make matters worse, even though Rohan Ince only suffered a minor injury it was significant enough that it'd keep him out of the team's next game, forcing the English defensive midfielder to miss a second consecutive F.A. Cup match.

A match-up between the highest scoring team and the team that had given up the least goals in the Championship this season went to the best defensive team, as QPR pitched a shoutout and took advantage of a five-minute scoring spurt to earn a significant victory at Rodney Parade that all but takes The Exiles out of contention for direct promotion this season.

Marccelino's Diary: What a roller-coaster this season is turning out to be. For most of the season it felt as if we could almost taste direct promotion and yet over the last 2-3 months our form has declined ever so slightly but to the point where direct promotion is more a dream than a reality and the nightmare of missing out on the promotion playoffs altogether is still a possibility. We need to close out the season in a strong note and I think we have shown enough signs that it's something we're capable of accomplishing.

Amazingly our form in the F.A. Cup remains outstanding and I continue to be overwhelmed with the history this squad is writing into the books. I felt that we had a good game plan against Chelsea and we executed it well for the most part. Giles is becoming someone Exiles' fans identify with, a gritty player most don't expect much from who comes up big time and time again for us. I could totally see him playing for us his whole career because he too has strong feelings for the club. He's still young though so a lot could change, but I have to believe he'll remain a strong piece of our puzzle even after Farfan's arrival because of the impact player he has turned out to be.

Finally, I wasn't particular impressed by any single prospect brought to my attention by our scouts in England, Spain, and Brazil so there were no additions to the academy after April. Our youth squad remains with the following prospects:

CDM - Doke Boëtius (65 OVR, 81-87): This 17-year old from Netherlands standing at 6'3" and 169lbs is our next top prospect at the position and his development coupled with a stall in the development of Cristiano Dall'Oglio has fans wondering whether the Dutch defensive midfielder might overtake the Italian sooner rather than later. At the very least Boëtius should be someone ready for a loan opportunity next season.

LB - Jeff Cohen (53 OVR, 76-94): 16-year old from England who is the newest addition to the academy. He doesn't seem to have the pace for this position so he may be worked out elsewhere depending on his growth.

CB - Tom Maguire (50 OVR, 74-90): 17-year old from England following on the footsteps of Tafari Hunt and Bondz Laslie but hoping to break the mold and become someone of consideration on the roster. He has a long way to go right now but he shows promise.

RB - Willem Van Hout (56 OVR, 79-85): This 16-year old from Belgium is still very raw but exhibits good potential and coaches in the academy are trying to make sure he remains focused on working on developing his game. Doesn't possess the pace the team would like at the position but Marccelino is keeping more of an open mind when it comes to that after watching Nicolai Fernandes play.

CDM - Daniel Amaral (51 OVR), 70-88): 15-year old from Brazil whose signing has received some criticism since the club seems to be loaded at his position. However, Newport County is still very far from being the kind of team that can pass on talent so we'll just have to follow how Amaral develops.

Haha I wasn't home when it happened my wife took the picture! She came home from work and found the disc on the floor. We're pretty strict about not scolding him unless we catch him in the act. Read that dogs won't really remember what they're getting in trouble for if you don't catch them in the act and will just be confused. He damn well knows what he did though you can see the guilt in his eyes! haha took him to the dog park later that day though so its all good he quickly forgot about it haha

You could just buy another 16 disc, but you may not want to do that so close to 17.

You're absolutely right in both parts. I can buy a new copy, but I don't really want to spend much money on it with 17 coming out in September. I really really miss playing though. If I can find a used copy for cheap I'll buy it but if not I'll just have to save my money and wait for 17 to come out
