    January 2020

    Liverpool 0 - 0 Grimsby Town
    MOTM: Dickenson

We know that going into Anfield is never going to be easy, and getting a draw is something that we should be happy with. The game was completely shut down on both sides and the total for the game was 5 shots combined. The fans couldn't have been particularly happy with this one, but we did what we needed to do.

Grimsby Town 1 - 3 West Ham United
    GRI - Bogle 40' (PEN)
    WHU - Kouyate 7', Ayew 13'. Masuaku 37'
    MOTM: Masuaku

We got absolutely embarrassed in our own stadium. West Ham squeezed the life out of us while putting relentless assault on our goal. Kouyate got the first after making a great run and then placing it well inside the near post. Ayew then added the second from the edge of the box with a great shot across the keeper and inside the far post. And then as if to prove it wasn't our day, Thomas made a save but it fell right to Masuaku and he tapped it in to make it three. We got a minor consolation with the referee awarding a penalty and Bogle was able to put it away.

    F.A. Cup
    Grimsby Town 0 - 2 Norwich City
    NOR - Pritchard 7', Doumbia 38'
    MOTM: Pritchard

And we have officially found ourselves in a run of poor form and it couldn't have come at a worse time. Pritchard made a great run through a gap in our defense and got the ball on his left foot and hit it across the goal to the far post for the lead. We should have equalized after but a combination of poor finishing and some great saves by the keeper kept us off the score sheet. Then Doumbia made a run almost identical to Pritchard's earlier to get through on goal and he easily slotted it past the keeper to double the lead. No matter what we did afterwards, we couldn't manage to get anything that was too threatening and we are going crashing out of the cup against a lower league side.

    Watford FC 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
    GRi - Sacko 9', Banton 20'
    MOTM: Cole

It was great to get a win after a poor run of form lately, and it was especially needed with Manchester United coming up next on our schedule. Sacko scored first after Vieira got down the left and sent the ball in straight to his feet and he first timed it into the right side of the goal. Not long after Cole played the ball through to Banton and he was able to hold off his defender and use his left foot to power a shot past the keeper and inside the far post. Not much happened after that, but we did lose Morris to a red card after he committed a couple of bad challenges.

    Manchester United 1 - 1 Grimsby Town
    MUN - Fosu-Mensah 49'
    GRI - Kelly 54'
    MOTM: Santos

Callum Kelly at 19 years old had the audacity to come up to me before the game and not only ask to play against Manchester United, but to start. Something about the kid's confidence appealed to me though so I gave him a shot, and boy did he answer the call. United took the lead early in the second half with Fosu-Mensah getting the ball in space at the top of the box and all he had to do was place his effort inside the left post. This is when Kelly endeared himself to the fans after pulling down Hourihane's over the top ball, holding off his defender, and then beating the keeper low to grab the equalizer. We tightened up afterwards and as the game started winding down we shifted to more defensive personnel and settled for the draw.

      League Match 2
FC Barcelona - UD Almería (2-1)
      Müller 48' (Busquets)
      Neymar 72' (Piqué)

      Herrera 84'
      Müller 22'

Despite a tough first half we were able to turn our Camp Nou opener into a success thanks to impressive goals from Müller and Neymar. Former Barça attacking midfielder Robert Gonçalves made his return as a starter for the visitors and had a couple of scoring chances but failed to put his shots on target.

Euro League - Group Match 1
FC Barcelona - Standard Liège (1-0)
      Montoya 35' (Sandro)
      Rafinha 45'
      Sandro 64'

Our B-team's debut brought mixed results performance wise but luckily for us we were able to put the score in our favor to start off on the right foot in the UEL. I felt we could had converted on some more of our 5 shots on goal and I was specifically disappointed with Munir who missed the easiest chance of them all, a sitter with only the GK between him and the goal after he had had plenty of time to line up his shot (he shot it way wide). I decided to move Embolo in part because I trust Munir can fill in as the backup ST so he'll need to perform a lot better than on this night.

      League Match 3
Valencia CF - FC Barcelona (0-5)
      Turan 34' (Messi)
      Messi 63' (pen)
      Müller 68' (Roberto)
      Roberto 85' (Müller)
      Sandro 90+2' (Müller)

Woah! Here we go. It's taken us a bit to get going to start this season but ironically enough in our toughest game to date we looked unbeatable, putting a drumming on Valencia at the Mestalla. Müller led the charge to finish up the scoring, putting our third goal on the board and then assisting the last two.

      League Match 4
Málaga CF - FC Barcelona (1-3)
      Neymar 2' (Roberto)
      Müller 45+1' (Mayke)

      Recio 62'
      Müller 89' (Neymar)

Neymar put us ahead in our first shot of the game and Müller scored at the end of each half to officially put us on a winning streak in La Liga. We're in really good groove right now, moving the ball a lot better which is resulting in some great flow on offense and even though we only have one clean sheet to show for our defense is also playing at a high level.

      League Match 5
FC Barcelona - Sevilla FC (3-1)
      Roberto 20' (Müller)
      Neymar 38' (Messi)
      Neymar 55' (Turan)

      Mastour 59'

Sevilla was supposed to be a challenge for us but we're in top form and they never stood a chance. Our 13 shots (9 on target) could had made the score a lot more inflated while Sevilla was only able to muster 4 shots (2 on target). Neymar in particular is in excellent form now having scored in three of his last four appearances.

Messi assisting Neymar for our second goal

Euro League - Group Match 2
      AIK - FC Barcelona (0-4)
      Sandro 3' (Vidal)
      Rafinha 13' (Munir)
      Munir 44' (Sandro)
      Vidal 78' (Tello)

The B-squad got the call again and this time they showed out against the Swedish club, beating them senseless on their own turf. Another goal in our first shot of the game got us going and even Munir looked the part in this one. Just the kind of dominant performance I'd hope to have in this game.

Review: I hadn't noticed we are not shown on the standings but obviously we're in first place, actually tied with Betis in points but ahead of them due to our goal differential which is at +10 after an amazing September. It started off shaky there with the hard-fought win against Almería after our draw with Levante (that was nearly a loss) to start the season but we were just a different team after the beat down we put on Valencia. That game was a lot of fun. Even our B-squad seemed to get a pep in their step as the month went on. I can't deny that it is a lot of fun to play with such a talented roster although I also have to manage the pressure of being expected to win every competition. Luckily the B-squad has been taking care of business in the UEL which I need them to do right now especially considering our opponents are significantly less talented. It can be easy for this roster to be disinterested in playing in the UEL as opposed to the Champions League but I've asked them to prove to me that they're too good for for the UEL. So far the B-squad has met the challenge and it'll be interesting to see if the main squad can answer the bell when they get the call in later games.

Individually although Müller had the better month statistically it was Neymar who was our best performer. The Brazilian was a nightmare for opposing fullbacks and a constant scoring threat.

With regards to the academy I'm happy to report additions to our youth squad:

      La Masia
      (listed by ranking)

CM - Fran Martinez (59 OVR, 76-94 POT): 17-year old from Venezuela standing at 5'7", 150lbs and described as technically gifted. Martinez displays natural movement (80 agility, 76 balance) to go with very good ball control (75) and curve (74) on the ball.

ST - Darío Verdejo (46 OVR, 74-90)*: 17-year old from Spain standing at 5'11" and 176lbs. Verdejo is described as physically strong and indeed his strength (76) is his top attribute although he isn't just a log as he also has good speed (74) and jumping (72). He's very raw technically though so he'll need to work hard in that aspect of his game to develop as a scorer.

CAM - Daniel Lugano (54 OVR, 72-88): Also a 17-year old Venezuelan described as technically gifted who is also very agile (79). Since I'm able to make better evaluations of Venezuelan prospects I know Lugano, who is 5'11" and 154lbs, can also play as either a CF or CM so we're excited about his versatility on the pitch.

CB - Javier Gonzalez (52, 67-87)*: 18-year old from Spain who is physically strong. Gonzalez stands out for his aggression (78) and strength (74) although much like Verdejo he also has good pace (74 spd/71 acc) and jumping (71). Gonzalez isn't too raw but does need to develop quickly since he'll surely want to be promoted sooner than later.

      WC Qualifying - Match 15
      Venezuela - Paraguay (2-1)
      Juanpi 13' (Martínez)
      Otero 60' (Martínez)

      Caballero 64'

WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE WORLD CUP!!!

It's been a long road in these qualifiers and I can guarantee you CONMEBOL is no walk in the park but we officially clinched a spot in the big dance thanks to this win. Juanpi continues to be amazing in these qualifiers and Josef Martínez took a break from competing for the scoring title to assist in both goals. I'm stoked!

      WC Qualifying - Match 16
      Colombia - Venezuela (1-3)
      Rondón 9' (Del Valle)
      Castillo 12'
      Rondón 15' (Del Valle)
      Otero 38' (Martínez)

We're ON FIRE. This was a strong win for us on the road in a rivalry game that is usually tough on us. Yonathan Del Valle had two ridiculous crosses towards Salomón Rondón reminiscent of Rondón's days at West Brom. We have no shot at finishing as the leaders in the standings and even catching up to Brazil in second place will be a steep challenge but we can finish in third place and this win definitely helped us get closer to that. Third best team in the South America after Argentina and Brazil isn't too bad, right?

October is really going to test us, from the first game at the Vicente Calderón to facing a bunch of teams with "Real" on their name including our rivals in El Clásico towards the end of the month before we close out October with a match-up against a surprise contender in this early season.

      Stay tuned!

        Season 4

        The Mariners

        February 2020

        Swansea City 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
        GRI - Sacko 57', Al Kuwaykibi 89'
        MOTM: Cole

We didn't create a whole lot of chances, but we were efficient enough with the ones that we did to grab the win away from home. The first half saw no goals, but in the second half Sacko got the ball from Cole on the edge of the box and he turned his man to get around the right and he slotted it low across the goal to the far post. Swansea pushed hard for the equalizer, even hitting the post on two separate occasions. But in the last minute Cole found Al Kuwaykibi on the right and he placed it just below the keeper and that put the game to bed.

        Grimsby Town 1 - 2 Liverpool FC
        GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 90'
        LFC - Ojo 55', Coutinho 76'
        MOTM: Fabinho

We deserved more out of this, but our defense left too many holes and Liverpool are too good of a team to get away with that against. We forced Karius into a number of saves in the first half, but he was up to the challenge. In the second half there was finally a breakthrough, but unfortunately it was for them as Ojo headed in a cross from in front of goal. Coutinho then added a second with a fantastic first time shot from the right side of the goal back across to the top corner. We finally got one at the end, but it was nothing more than a consolation after Al Kuwaykibi finished it off across the keeper.

        Bournemouth 1 - 3 Grimsby Town
        BOU - Bolados 88'
GRI - Banton 23', Amang 45' (PEN), Al Kuwaykibi 90'
        MOTM: Amang

This was pretty much over at half when we had a 2 goal advantage and Bournemouth were playing a man down. Banton struck first after Amang played a low ball in and his first shot was kept out but came right back to him for the tap in the second time around. Then right at the end of the half Cook slid in and clipped Amang from behind as he was through on goal and was shown a straight red for the tackle. Amang stepped up and calmly put it away to score on his first game back from injury. They did add a late consolation with Bolados getting around the defense and going in to place it across the keeper to the far post. Al Kuwaykibi then put it away for good after Hourihane played him through and he finished low across the goal.

Europa League Round of 32 Leg 1
        Feyenoord 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
        FEY - Tapia 45', 55'
        GRI - Amang 3'
        MOTM: Tapia

We couldn't have gotten off to a better start, but then reality set in as Feyenoord came roaring back. Practically off the kick off Banton was able to play Amang through and his pace got him through on goal for the quick finish. Then right before the half we got unlucky and a tackled ball was picked up by Feyenoord and played right to Tapia for the easy finish on the near post. He then added another on the other side of the break and hit the ball while turning to bring his foot around it and place it inside the near post for the deciding goal. Even though we didn't get the result we had hoped for after taking that early lead, the away goal is precious for us heading into the second leg.

Europa League Round of 32 Leg 2
        Grimsby Town 0 (1) - (3) 1 Feyenoord
        FEY - Tapia 39'
        MOTM: El Hankouri

And just like that our European adventure is over. We scuffed an unbelievable number of chances and honestly should have scored at least 3 or 4 on the night. But, we came up short and that was the difference between advancing and crashing out. They grabbed an away goal to cancel out ours just before the half when Tapia took advantage of an overplayed ball and smashed it into the left side of the goal. That was more than they needed in the end, but it gave them the sense of assurance to close it out with confidence.

            Arsenal 0 - 2 PSG
            PSG - Cavani 82’ (pen), 86’

Shkodran Mustafi picked up a horrific red card in the 82’. Edinson Cavani converted the penalty, and Arsenal’s defense continued to self destruct, allowing Cavani in behind them to complete his brace just 4 minutes later. PSG wins the group as a result, and Arsenal draw Italian giants Juventus in the KO Round.

            Arsenal 1 - 1 Stoke City
            STO - Bojan 30’
            ARS - Walcott 47’

Bojan Krkić stunned the Gunners late in the 1st half to give Stoke the lead at the half--but the HT lashing the boys received kicked them into gear, as Theo Walcott found the equalizer just 2 minutes into the 2nd. Nobody else could find the goal, as Arsenal notched their first draw in the league this year.

            Matchday #16 | Goodison Park
            Arsenal 1 - 0 Everton
            ARS - Gibbs 82’

A midweek fixture saw Arsenal travel to Goodison to take on Everton on a rainy Wednesday night. The game was deadlocked at 0 until Kieren Gibbs, a recent substitute was able to find the winner--an unlikely hero no doubt. Captain Koscielny’s set piece header rammed off the bar, coming right to Gibbs who finished the goal, and the Toffeees for his first goal of the campaign.

            Arsenal 1 - 0 Manchester City

City dominated possession but a Mesut Ozil cross found a sprinting Bellerin for the game’s only goal early on. Very few opportunities for either side, lots of possession changes. A big 3 points for the Gunners.

            Matchday #18 | Emirates Stadium
            West Brom 0 - 1 Arsenal
            ARS - Sanchez (pen) 56’

A stingy West Brom defense kept Arsenal from finding many opportunities, but a Berahino handall allowed Sanchez to notch his 15th goal of the season, giving Arsenal 3 more points on Boxing Day.

Shocking result for Arsenal to close 2016 with a draw to a team in the relegation zone. Gunners went down early but were able to equalize with a tremendous effort from Alex Iwobi.

            ***Manager Remarks***

December was a busy month, with the final Champions League group stage fixture that I botched to PSG (0-2), and 6 league games--in which I earned 14 of out a possible 18 points.

I head into January with just 5 matches on the schedule--including a back to back in the FA Cup and League away at Swansea, with home matches against Bournemouth (20th), Burnley (19th), and Watford (13th). Anything less than 9 points from those 3 will be exceptionally disappointing.

The January transfer window is opening, and I am looking at a big name attacking player. I've narrowed it down to Atlético Madrid's Antoine Griezmann and Juventus' Paulo Dybala. Griezmann fits the exact profile of what I want, but it's been reported that Atlético want £126M for him. I am considering offering less cash + Santi Cazorla--as he is getting up in age, and would welcome the thought of playing in his native country.

This month had some key battles in league play Notts is trying to pull back in on Rotherham. We won all league matches this month as Akinde and Sheppard both had goals flying in from everywhere.

In FA Cup action we had the monumental task of playing Man City at the Ethiad Stadium. But Notts shocked the mess out of me as the lads jumped to an early 2-0 lead and went on to win 3-0. Next in the FA Cup was Crystal Palace this match was tougher as it ended with both teams in a 0-0 draw. The replay will take place second week in February. Can't wait for that.

So as the season marches on we have two goals, win League One, and win FA Cup since we so close last season. February update will be later.

Basically I'll post up the squad at the end of the transfer window and everyone will pick a player to "sponsor". There'll be a system of points for various things like goals, assists, clean sheets etc and an overall leader board. Just something to get more interactivion again.

That sounds like a great idea. I am also trying to find ways to make my career interactive for others to follow along with. But instead of controlling one team, I play every match of the PL and the FA cup.

I do play on PES (I know this is a FIFA board but the PES board doesn't have as many followers!)

                          The Mariners

                          March & April 2020

                          Grimsby Town 2 - 2 Everton FC
                          GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 20', Cole 58'
                          EVE - Cerny 50', Fines Mori 83'
                          MOTM: Cole

It's really frustrating to concede late like that and cost us the win, but honestly Everton deserved more than a loss from this one. They put a stunning number of shots on our goal, but Thomas was in top form and kept us losing. We opened the scoring using the pace of Cole and Al Kuwaykibi to combine on the break with the latter tapping in the final ball for the lead. Their equalizer came off of a corner that bounced around in the box and ultimately ended up at Cerny's feet and he just tapped it in. But it was Cole's pace once again that proved problematic and he terrorized their back line to get through again and finish low around the keeper. Towards the end though Funes Mori got the ball outside of the box and scooped it around to his right foot and blasted his shot from distance off the post and in for an unbelievable equalizer.

                          Manchester City 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
                          MCI - Denayer 26'
                          GRI - Banton 45', Amang 79'
                          MOTM: Hourihane

I couldn't be prouder right now after these players fell behind early and then gave everything they had to not only come back and equalize, but to win it in the end as well. Denayer is the one that put us on our back foot when he was on hand to tap in a rebound off of a save. Then just before half it was Banton who conjured up a bit of magic and wove his way through the entire defense and slotted it home to tie it up. City thought they had found a winner in the second half, but it was ruled offside and we took advantage to grab the momentum and Amang dealt the final blow with a low shot that really should have been saved, but ended up in the net anyway.

                          Sunderland AFC 0 - 1 Grimsby Town
                          GRI - Djilobodji 90' (OG)
                          MOTM: Sanchez

This was an unbelievable finish to an extremely hard fought game. Sunderland gave us all we could handle, and a draw wouldn't have been an undeserving outcome, but the win still felt right in the end. It literally came down to the last kick of the game with us pressing Sunderland for a winner and Al Kuwaykibi turned his man to get around the edge and he lined up his shot aiming for the far post but Djilobodji stuck his foot out to stop it and unfortunately for Sunderland his touch directed it back inside the near post giving us the deciding goal.

                          Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Stoke City
                          GRI - Cole 9', Otayn 12', Chambers 20'
                          MOTM: Al Kuwaykibi

We did our damage early, and the coasted to the finish line after that, even throwing some young guys out there for experience at the end. The first came from Cole after Al Kuwaykibi played him down the middle and he hit it low under the keeper. Cole then turned provider for the second when he flicked the ball on to Otayn on the back post and he finished across the goal inside the far post. Al Kuwaykibi then used his pace to burn the defense down the left and he sent the ball across the box where Chambers first timed it back into the goal. We had a good number of chances after that as well, but we didn't convert any of those although it didn't matter at the end.

                          Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Hull City
                          GRI - Hourihane 19', Banton 83'
                          MOTM: Hourihane

We didn't play well, but the score line flattered us at the end of the day. We got given a gift early when Odubajo slid through Hourihane in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Hourihane took it himself and slotted it to the bottom left just barely past the keeper's reach who had dove the correct way but couldn't reach it. Hull really tested Thomas in goal after that trying to find the equalizer, but he stood tall in between the sticks and was able to parry everything away. We were then able to put the game away with Quiroga playing Banton through on the left and he kept it low and around the keeper to extend our lead.

                          Grimsby Town 0 - 1 Southampton
                          SOU - Ward-Prowse 67'
                          MOTM: Osadebe

Both sides were evenly matched, but it was Southampton that got the deciding goal and that was enough to hand us the loss. Their goal came as a result of some fantastic build up play and they pinged the ball around our box ultimately finding Ward-Prowse and his shot was tipped by the keeper but it still found it's way in. Nothing we did was enough to grab the equalizer and Southampton took all 3 points from us.

                          Tottenham 1 - 3 Grimsby Town
                          TOT - Kane 52'
                          GRI - Gordon 62', Al Kuwawykibi 88', Cole 90'
                          MOTM: Willis

Tottenham pushed us to our limits, but a couple of good substitutions paid off with two late goals to lock up this win. The first half was uneventful but the second half provided plenty of action for anyone watching. Kane started it off with a great volley past our keeper. We found an unlikely equalizer from Gordon coming up from his right back spot to finish it across the goal. Then we started using our subs and Al Kuwaykibi was the first to pay off with a great turn on the left and a strong finish into the top corner for the lead. After that we caught them out on the counter as they tried to push for an equalizer of their own and Sacko chipped a ball over the top for Cole running into the box and he finished it just out of the keeper's reach to put the game to rest.

                          Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Crystal Palace
                          GRI - Amang 38', Banton 89'
                          MOTM: Amang

I'm happy that this was a solid performance where we outperformed the opponent in every measurable category possible. Palace did put pressure on us early, but after we withstood that they offered little threat the rest of the way. We ended up breaking the deadlock though with Hourihane using his patience to find a through ball for Amang up the middle and he tucked it away on the right side of the goal. Banton then put it away for good by getting ahead of the defense on the counter and placing his shot low and to the opposite corner to double the lead.

                          Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Leicester City
                          GRI - Cole 21', Labadie 55', Bogle 90'
                          MOTM: Cole

This was one of the most dominating performances we have had in some time, and it came while playing our reserves. We registered 15 shots to their 4, and 10 shots on goal to their 1. Our first came with Kelly playing Cole through up the middle and he had an easy finish past the keeper for the lead. Labadie then got the second after making a great turn around the defender and then finishing low across the goal. With the game already wrapped up we added another with Cole playing a simple ball across after drawing the keeper out and Bogle just tapped it in.

                              February 2018 Update

February we started league play on a mission to reel in Rotherham, first match of the month went well. But after that all we could muster is draws. By the end of the month we were sputtering along. We are now 10 points away from first, and even though we have a nice gap to third, a championship in this league looks like an exaggeration.

In FA Cup action the replay with Crystal Palace was a spectacle. Crystal Palace jumped out to a 2-0 lead. I said this is how this is going to end, we quickly got back into the game with a pair goals. It stays deadlocked for the rest of the match. We go into extra time and in the 98th minute we take the lead. I said ok guys lets hold them off. We tried, but five minutes later they evened things back up. That's the way it stayed forcing us to go to penalties. Penalties we just fell off, so just like our goal of winning the FA Cup ends, bitterly.

As of right now it looks like our two goals one is a sure fail and the other is not looking good either.
