Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

First full season at St. Albans is in the books. After managing an escape last season, it was time to restructure the squad. Ownership was expecting a top half finish. They aren't asking for much. They actually gave me a transfer budget of $26k, but like I'm going to use any of that. Free transfers and loans here.

We got off to a hot start at the beginning of the season, winning four of our first six games and getting as high as 3rd in the table. A five-game losing streak in November and December dropped us to 15th and people questioning my choice of tactics.

It was about this time that I brought in right winger Jay Wilson in on a loan from MK Dons. His first start was a little shaky. But then in his second start, he collected two assists in a 5-1 victory, then scored 4 goals in our next two matches. An injury to Jay would see us going on another five game losing streak, dropping us to 13th.

Once Jay came back, our attack clicked. The goals became plentiful. In our final 12 games, we scored 3+ goals 8 times. We had a prolific attack all season, only getting shut out one time the entire season. We started climbing up the table. We closed out the season on a 12 match unbeaten streak, including winning our final five matches to....

    Spoiler

In the first round of the promotion playoffs, we got Dover. They knocked us out of the FA Cup in the third qualifying round earlier in the year. We split the season series with them. Two goals by Ronaldo Brown paced us to a 5-2 victory. Then it was on to Dartford. We drew both matches against them. Dartford jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but by halftime we had clawed back to within one. However, we couldn't put one across in the second half and our promotions dreams went up in smoke.

    Still, a very successful season.

    Fans Players of the Season

ST Reece Miller (46 app, 32 goals, 13 assists, 7 POMs, 7.45 rating) - brought in on a loan from our parent club Watford. Really came on down the stretch, scoring 16 of his 32 goals in his final 20 appearances. Was named to the Player of the Week squad five times.

DC/CM Solomon Sambou (48 app, 7 goals, 12 assists, 6 POMs, 7.30 rating) - The captain improved on his 2017-18 numbers all across the board, despite splitting time nearly equally between defense and midfield (25 midfield, 23 center back). Is more at home in midfield, but the defense was thin at times due to injury. Was named to the Player of the Week squad seven times and was named the Player of the Month for the month of April.

AML Ronaldo Brown (41 app, 19 goals, 7 assists, 3 POMs, 7.23 rating) - Initially brought in last season after he was released by Oldham, Ronaldo had a breakout season this year. Really picked up towards the end of the season, as did most of the team. Was named to the Player of the Week squad four times.

    Signing of the Season
GK George Willis (49 app, 8 sho, 1.49 g/90, 6.98 rating) - Signed from Boston United on a free transfer. George was their backup keeper, making 14 appearances last season. Started every game but two for us. Was named vice-captain after Solomon Sambou was promoted to captain following the departure of captain Paul Green. Was named to the Player of the Week squad an impressive 11 times.

    Young Player of the Season
AMR Jay Wilson (26 app, 15 goals, 15 assists, 5 POM, 7.77 rating) - Brought in on a loan from MK Dons. Jay proved to be the signing that jump started this team and seriously improved the attack of this team. Both Miller and Brown began excelling more when Wilson came onto the scene. Named to the Player of the Week squad five times in just half a season.

I signed a contract extension giving me a $5k raise. The board also increased the budget to $450k and a transfer budget of $67k. I'm actually turning profits at this club, despite being at such a small club.

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

It's my 3rd season in charge of Seattle in the updated 7-tier USA Pyramid. I won the league in year 2 (despite dropping my last 4 games) and came into year 3 with a big transfer budget (but a terribly low league reputation, so signing big $$ guys was hard).

I really wanted to be strong in the league again, but make a run in the FIFA Champions League (worldwide champions league). I qualified directly into the group stage, with a pretty easy group: Benfica was my toughest draw. We met in the 3rd game of the group, with both of us sitting on 6 points. I fell behind 1-0 late in the game, but 2 heroic counter-attacking goals changed that:
      <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/s-wE9n3twPk" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe>

After 2 more wins and a draw, I was able to win group L:

However, that drew me against Galatasary, who had won the Turkish league last season. In the first away leg, Jordan Morris single-handedly kept us in the series as he scored 2 goals (and had 1 more just called offside), giving the team a respectable 3-2 loss away.

All we needed was a 2-1 win at home, and we were through. Fabian Castillo and Benjamin Rollheiser gave us more than that!

The 2nd knockout round draw hasn't happened yet, but there's 32 teams left. Best case I get a team like Jeonbuk (who beat Ajax), Brondby IF (who beat Guimares), Pachuca (beat Aberdeen), Pacos Ferreira (beat Young Boys) or Universidad Catolica (who beat AC Milan).

Of course, there's only a ~15% chance I get one of those teams. I'm more likely to get stuck against Dortmund, Real Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, Barcelona, etc. I've been a Cinderella so far, but it will probably end.

UPDATE: ....AND I DREW BARCELONA. CRAP.

For a first leg away at Barcelona, that went about as well as I could hope for.

A Jordan Morris hat trick in the first half, and only losing by 1.

Now for leg 2. Do I risk it and go on the offensive to get the win, or hope I can win on the counter?

Well, I made it close. Good effort boys I got a hat trick from my other forward this time, young Argentinian Benjamin Rollheiser.

Crazy effort @studbucket! But you were so lucky only to let in 4 goals in the first leg. 34 shots, only 11 on target - abysmal for such a team like Barcelona. They would've probably scored almost 10 goals if i would've played against them

I felt very lucky. They were really susceptible to the counter, and my goalie stood on his head. I probably should have lost 12-4 on aggregate or something

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

I also will get back on the game now. Took a little break from it, but i started again with my Schalke save in the second season yesterday. I am currently at work and it's itching in my fingers to get it going at home. Although i lost the first game against Stuttgart after taking a 1:0 lead i am eager to get back to the drawing board and finding out how to fix the problems that led to the 1:2 defeat. Directly trying to bounce back against Hannover.

And to be honest: i must say, at the beginning, i got way too much into the game in terms of emotions. I don't know why. Maybe it's because Schalke is the love of my life or maybe because it's so frustrating to lose after putting in so much time and effort into the team and tactics. Really need to get a grip and realize that at the end of the day it is just a video game. Took a good first step when i lost the first game yesterday after a couple of weeks not playing the game. Probably would've been fuming when i first picked up FM18. But yesterday i thought: "Ah, well, Stuttgart made really good transfers and although we came up short, we played fairly decent. No need to be stubborn about it and quit. Just play on and figure stuff out."

Hope i can keep that mentality up. FM really is so much fun; even though there are results that you cannot explain and things happening that just make your head shake -- but that's the life of a manager, i guess.

I was thinking of doing a youth challenge in Scotland couple weeks ago

team stumbled down the stretch and finished 2nd again. I played backups in the final match because Juventus already won the league before I played.

Is NI interesting? I don't think I've ever loaded it up as a league. I'm always afraid that in smaller leagues a few good prospects can lead to easy domination. (Also I hope I'm remembering correctly that it was you that were in NI in FM)

I've never managed in NI. But it is the lowest rated top flight league in the game. It would be a long term save. It would take years in the game to even get you to a point where you could qualify for a CL group stage, let alone try and win one. You'd have to personally drag the country up the ranks. And it would take forever to improve the rep.

I mean, I'm certainly aware of the length, I'm not even certain it's doable, mostly I'm just searching for something I haven't really attempted before, but not something that's gonna blow my mind(like Brazil/Argentina)

It was more of a joke comment. I don't think anyone would want to even do that kind of challenge. It would be very boring just winning your league over and over and over like that.
