Yes, real life Spurs do have a tendency to overpay for players like Bentley & Bent, but they've also done pretty well with buying English born players such as Lennon (around £1M from Leeds), Jenas, Huddlestone & stealing Bostock from Crystal Palace. To be fair I'd also throw Hutton into the boat of overpaying, even though he's Scottish, and Bale is Welsh, but they didn't pay a ton for him.

My strategy is to build the best team possible, while still attempting to stay somewhat within the realm of real world possibility (Henrique is the one dream signing I pulled off). Sandro has been linked with Spurs for months now, and Otamendi seems to be some sort of FM CB legend in the making, so I took a flier on him also.

Warnock, Kevin Nolan, Scott Parker, Michael Turner and Victor Moses are all other English players I'm tracking, along with LB Figurora (sp?) and Velon Behrami (although he's out for 4 months with an injury in my game).

Make all the jokes you want, I think Spurs have done a relatively decent job in the transfer market considering the number of managers they've blown through in the past 4 seasons.

Well damn, he must develop into a somewhat good CB then. If he can ever approach that value in my save then he looks like a deal at under £6M.

I love friendly banter Hutton It's all good...and yes, Otamendi is a very solid buy Get him at the beginning because his price only goes up tons from there.

I didn't sign him for my Milan save as I can only sign 2 non EU players per season. I also wanted to focus on building with Italian youth and players with 3 exceptions....Gourcuff, Lloris, and maybe Dzeko. I'm going to use the installment plan to buy them

Otamendi is a bit short for my liking at CB, but his ratings look pretty solid & he is young (I believe 21 at start of game?).

He'll get some starts early on with Woodgate & Dawson both injured. That unfortunately leaves me with a temporary rotation of Ledley, Corluka & Otamendi at CB (Hudd can also fill in back there if absolutely necessary). I just need to get the fitness in check for the others.

I'd say Otamendi is a beast in my save. Dinamo Kiev snagged him for $20M in 2011/12 and Juve just bought him for $23M.

EDIT: Just looking at his stats, his mental game is just not there. Physically, he is a monster, but that 8 technique, 5 off the ball, and 12 decisions are just not that good at all (possibly even terrible?).

Weak heading & jumping (both 13) combined with being on the short side (5'10") aren't a recipe for success in the Prem, or my ideal CB, but for £5.5M if he can grow into a better player I'll just sell him off, since he seems to fetch great value in many saves.

I just can't see a CB with just 6 caps in 2012 being worth £23M! EDIT: Whoops, just saw you were speaking in $$, not ££. He's worth more like £14-15M if my conversion is correct

He is an absolute monster on some ratings though, his physical stats are impressive. Perhaps he needs a specific, custom training schedule to maximize his talent?

Ugh, my team is struggling. I started out hot, but now I'm losing to teams I have no business losing to. I don't think I'm doing anything crazy, I either go with a modified 4-3-3, a 5-3-2, or a 4-2-4 which is basically a 4-4-2, and I'm still getting killed.

If you switch up your tactic or starting XI too frequently, your team doesn't have a chance to adapt and gel together. That could be the problem. Stick with one tactic or one for home fixtures and one for away fixtures. Three just may be too much...

Yeah, I've pretty much done away with the 5-3-2 already, it didn't really work, and my team's turned around since. Drew 3-3 against MK Dons and then beat 1st place Charlton.

If you get him tutored by the right people, he develops well. On my Barca save, I had Puyol tutor him and his stats shot up a lot. he was a fringe starter for me the next season.

I've never really played long enough (I'm new to the FM series, started with FM08, but never played 08 or 09 that much) to experience the benefits of player tutoring.

Does a tutored player increase in only the mental aspects, or will he adapt a similar play style as the mentoring player also?

I love Woodgate's skill as a CB, but his injury proneness makes him tough to rely on as a regular fixture in defense. However if he could pass on some of his "skills" to other players he may well be worth keeping around just for that alone, as well as playing whenever fit.

How long does a player need to be tutored for to get the most out of the experience?

I need a new assistant manager to replace the rubbish Kevin Bond at Spurs.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good (somewhat cost effective) young English assman?

If you're looking for an assman, look no further than Frank Lampard...

Seriously though, regens are the best bet for an assistant manager. They come cheap with some pretty good stats too.

For assmen, I usually go to the staff search screen and set up the following filters:

Staff Position: *** Man (of course)
                              Judge Potential
                              Judge Ability
                              Tactical Knowledge
                              Man Management
                              Discipline
                              Motivating
                              Determination

I set each of those at 15, and have my current assman filter unrealistic targets. If there's no one there with 15, I move it to 14, and so on.
