Strasbourg Year One Update:
Pulled off a shock upset in the winter break friendlies. I should have been pulverized, but my defense was stifling. San Lorenzo only got off one shot. The Strasbourg supporters probably wondered if they had hallucinated the match, as that would be the only explanation for San Lorenzo looking like 2015 Chelsea and losing to a Championnat National side that needs to be within 2 feet from the net to score a goal.Comment

Here is the Championnat National table at the start of the January window. You'll notice it's an extremely low scoring league, with a lot of draws. As a result, if things continue at this pace 54 points will be good enough for automatic promotion.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Thank you for all the help, guys.
Taking your guys' advice to start with a big team to learn the game more, I started up a save as Real Madrid, which is the only European team I'm fairly familiar with (I've been to Santiago Bernabeu when I was on vacation to Madrid in January 2014 - though it was just a tour as they were not playing at home while I was there - and have been to Madrid a few times). I'm also a little more familiar with La Liga than most European leagues. I'm about a third of the way through the season and Ronaldo is insane. He's scoring an insane amount of goals (not that I didn't expect him to considering he's maybe the best in the world, but he's exceeded all expectations) and my team in general is scoring a ton of goals. He actually scored five goals in my last game for a perfect 10.0 rating... I've been using an asymmetrical fast-paced attacking 4-3-1-2. We're currently first in La Liga by a slim margin over Valencia. We've won a lot of games with our offense, but we've had a few games where we can't get the ball into the back of the net and in those games we're usually in trouble. Barcelona has struggled this year and are only sixth, and we beat them handily in our first game against them this year. We have been killing it on goal differential as I have quite a few 5-0 or 6-0 beatdowns against La Liga opponents this year, though we've also surrendered more goals than would probably be ideal. Champions' League was a bit of a struggle as we only eked out a 2nd place finish by a slim margin with 10 points in six matches in group play, so that was a bit disappointing, but it was good enough.
I sold Denis Cheryshev for a healthy sum as he wasn't really fitting into my tactics and also will need to unload Pepe as he apparently wants to return home to Brazil, for whatever reason, and I promised to sell him by the end of the season. Not a huge loss there, but he provides some depth on defense, so it's not ideal, but hopefully I can get someone better.
In addition to Ronaldo, Benzema has also been very effective at putting the ball into the back of the neck, as has Jese, which is nice to see from a younger player. Bale struggled (relatively) a lot of the year, but has picked it up lately. Marcelo has been a great defender for me, but plays pretty fast and loose with the cards and has picked up a couple red cards this year, which has been an issue. Sergio Ramos is good.
Morale is generally good due to the winning, though juggling lineups to keep all my players happy with their playing time is sometimes difficult.
I'm not at home right now so I can't pull anything up now. Perhaps I will later tonight.
I might start up a lower league save to go along with this.Last edited by superjames1992; 12-02-2015, 09:51 PM.Comment

Awesome man. Madrid can also be tough because you're expected to win everything. I'd continue to finish the season before starting a lower league save. It's MUCH tougher replicating successful tactics on a team with less talent.
If you wanted a bigger challenge than Madrid, I'd suggest Celtic. I'm likely going to start one but you have a big team in Scotland trying to break through in Europe on a tight budgetComment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Champions League!!
Started off kinda rough, but really came on once I settled into my tactic at the end of the year.
Went into the Etihad and beat City 1-0 on the second to last match of the season to distance myself and secure the CL spot. A loss at the Etihad would have meant going back to the Europa League. Andros Townsend barely did anything for me all year, but in the 2nd half, he scored zipped one home off a FK, the ball landed right at his feet, and he hammered it home. Definitely fist pumpedand then immediately went into Contain/waste time lol, because even a draw would have had us in a pretty good spot.
Eriksen was a beast this year: average rating of like 7.57
Really gonna have to think long and hard about my midfield next season. Kind of a logjam right now. I'm almost surely going to be selling Chadli (almost sold him in January but talks with PSG broke down because I was trying to get too greedy).
I run a 4-1-2-3. 1 DM, 2 CMs, RAM, LAM, and ST. All year, I was rotating Dier and Maia (wonderkid purchased from Santos) in the DM spot. Eriksen was always slotted into one of those CM spots, and the other was a mixture of Bentaleb/Dembele/Mason.
I found myself not playing Dele Alli too often, so in January I loaned him out to Leicester. It was a good move, he was a key player for them, and got to play every game. But my plan is to work him into the fold next year.
So in the end I'll probably end up selling Chadli and Dembele or Mason. The profit from those 2, plus the money I already have in my transfer budget should leave me with a pretty decent chunk of change. Might go after a LB, as I've never been crazy about Danny Rose.University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Always lovely to start off the season beating Chelsea. 2nd match with them in a week due to my participation in the Terry Testimonial (Yeesh). Guess who I open the season against? Yup, Chelsea.
I'm not sure if disabling the transfer budget was smart.
In addition to Welbeck and Wilshere, Monreal suffered a dislocated shoulder and Ospina went down with a fractured wrist soon after. Matt Macey is now my backup and he's just not very good.Attached FilesComment

After beating Chelsea 2-1 in the Terry Testimonial, 3-0 in the Community Shield, I completed my hat trick winning again. Though it was 1-0, we should have scored more. Good start and defense playing wellAttached FilesComment

I played United and should have lost, but thanks to Kane and Clinton, the score flattered my team to say the least. Can't win without luck right?

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Some of it is luck. I was lucky to beat City for sure. I just settled on a good tactic and really just let the kids play. Kane's been fantastic tooComment
