So I bought 19 year old Marquinhos from Roma, he is now 21, and has developed enough to be a rotation player for me at CB. Well, Corinthians "made a bid" for him. I looked in my transfer center, and the fee was $0, and it said they were negotiating a contract. I was worried because it seemed like I was going to get this promising player snatched out from under me, but in the end Marquinhos turned them down.

He was not transfer listed, however he was loan listed (forgot to take him off the loan list from last season, I guess). I don't understand how a team can just all of the sudden offer a player a contract.

The only thing I can think of that might be the cause: I bought a young prospect from Corinthians who is set to join my squad after the current season. Oh, and Marquinhos played for Corinthians before he played at Roma.

Could one of those things allow them to try and steal him like they did?
Is his contract up in the next six months or less?

Yes, I'm in March, his contract is up after the season, I was just going to renew contracts then.

If they have less than 6 months remaining teams don't have to pay to sign him?

Yeah they can negotiate to leave on a free with 6 months remaining.

yes other teams can do this - so make sure you offer a contract asap.

some places you can't do this, e.g. the premier league you can't poach other teams in the league's players if they have less than 6 months left, only when they have a month left on their contract. but teams from other countries can come in with a contract offer with 6 months remaining

Since you're at a rich club, it's best if you extend the players you know you want to keep before they even get down to a year left. That way you'll get top dollar if you do decide to sell them. The closer a player is to the end of their contract, the less teams are willing to pay for them.

This is not always an option at smaller clubs where you're basically year to year on what you can spend on payroll.

I just started an MLS save and it's been fun...although I've hit a snag in August with registering players. I can't get my salary down past $59k (the cap is $56k) no matter if I unregistered players or not. Any tips on dumping salary? I can't get past the page unless I holiday through it, then it's fine (but I miss games)

if you have transfer budget / allocation left over, go into the screen where you can move the slider between transfer budget and wages towards wages - it will give you a higher salary cap. cant actually tell if this is cheating or allowed in the mls as i dont follow the mls that closely

Bless you, Willy. I had no idea that existed, and it works. Thanks a million (or a couple thousand in cap room)!

Whenever I but a foreign player, he always "has trouble blending into the squad because of the language barrier"

Does that have an effect on the player/team? If so, is there a way to help it?

The only thing that helps is if there are other players of that nationality on the team. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until that player learns the language.

I was wondering about this as well. For instance, if I have a midfielder who is having difficulties blending into the squad and is from Argentina, does the game help if my entire midfield speaks Spanish?

And ugh, I always knew the MLS keep playing on during international fixtures was a real-life annoyance, but now I understand it even more in FM.

What do you look for to use the switch positions tactic?

I've always used stick to position.

It depends on how fluid you want your team, in my experience. If you want to keep things rigid and, say, counter or defensive, you'd want guys to stick to their positions. I like to keep that setting on default and then have my team setting as fluid, because I want the team to have movement but not stray too much from my original plan. In general in those, I like to keep things default and then use the sliders for each individual player, that way you can tinker with how you want your guys to play (ie have an advanced playmaker who is good at it roam a little more but keep others where they are) rather than applying blanket instructions for everyone.

I'd like to play the upcoming US-Costa Rica game on FM using the rosters each team has set for the game. Can I export the two teams for versus play and then make a tournament with both of them? Would I be able to change the rosters from what my current FM save has? (Sorry, Bocanegra, this means you)
