I don't think Evans ever had that high of a ceiling. He was good for United, but he was never tipped to become a world class defender. I'm not saying he has already peaked for sure, because my club has a habit of signing late bloomers, but Evans doesn't exactly look like he's improving season by season.Comment

I would have loved Klopp but... Pochettino wouldn't be bad but you know.Comment

I'm as annoyed as anyone that we haven't signed a defender, though. And with the fan anger already at a fever pitch, imagine if Holding starts again alongside Chambers and we go 0-2? The sad thing is, that may be what it takes to make us panic buy. Because if they play well, I could see Wenger deciding "we have internal options, so there is no need to buy. I will not buy just to spend when we have top quality options in the team. And we have also Gabriel and Mertesacker, who will come back, and it will be like new signings." If you imagine that quote in Arsene's voice, you might get a little scared at the possibility.Comment

There were those rumors about club going after Howe when Wenger is done. I don't think it would happen though, at least not til he gets more seasoned.Comment

It just seems like it won't be until after Wenger is gone that Arsenal fans will appreciate the consistent success that he brought to the squad.Originally posted by My Wife"The Celtics only won because they have a magical elf playing for their team...."Comment

It's often said you don't realize how much you appreciate something until it's gone.
But being one of the largest clubs in the world, there's NO excitement about Arsenal. Nobody gives us even a shot to win the league, much less be relevant in the Champions League.

I think the majority of fans appreciate the consistency he's brought to the club, but it's a stretch to call it consistent success lately.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I appreciate everything Wenger has done for the club. And I think most Arsenal fans do as well. The Invincibles were truly magical, he brought us league titles and FA Cup wins, etc. All of that is great. The problem is, however, that his consistent success where we were actually legitimate title contenders is in the past. Now we are a super rich club with tons of money to spend on world class players and wages with a manager who is reluctant to spend. Wenger talks all the time to the media about how unfortunate he feels the gigantic transfer prices and wages that have taken over the modern game are, but that shouldn't matter. It may be unfortunate, but if that's the modern game, you have to adapt. You cannot remain stuck in the past and run your transfers like it's 2002. It would be like a major record label saying "things were so much better when everyone was buying full-album CDs. With the advent of MP3 and streaming now people only listen to singles. So we are going to only release our albums on physical CD. No iTunes, no Spotify, no digital downloads." That record label would get killed as revenues fell off a cliff. And yet, despite remaining stuck in the past Arsenal have not fallen off a cliff. They have managed to finish top four every year. That is remarkable, and it shows just what an amazing manager Arsene Wenger is. Ideally, then, we would have a director of football who would handle all the transfers while Wenger coached us to league titles, much the way American Sports teams have GMs. But sadly, Wenger has complete control and would likely never agree to a GM-style arrangement. Nor would the board ever consider such an arrangement. So Arsenal are left with a manager who has been left behind by the modern game, stubbornly refusing to adapt to the financial landscape of the league. That manager will not win another league title if he does not adapt, and so no matter what he did in the past, it may sadly be time for him to go.Comment
