4th place isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Kreb, can you present some advanced metrics since Arteta took over?

They certainly pass the eye test.

That’s likely not advanced enough though lol..

I think Arteta rates him highly, and will probably play a similar role compared to Lahm and Kimmich (best examples I can find).

So, it's way too early to compare lots of things, but there was one that stood out to me.

The one that was interesting is that if we only take the three games since Arteta took over (Bournemouth, Chelsea, United), no other team who has played three matches in that time has more passes (28 for Arsenal) within an estimated 20 yards of goal, excluding crosses.

That metric is known as DC, for deep passes completed—all following numbers relate to this.

Unsurprisingly, for the season, the clear leaders in this category are Man City (288 total, 13.71/game) followed not very closely by Liverpool (207 total, 10.89/game), who have played two less matches.

In the three matches Arteta has managed, Arsenal have averaged 9.3/game, the next closest is Chelsea and Leicester at 8.3/game. Prior to the last three matches, Chelsea averaged 8.2/game and Leicester 7.8/game. So, their numbers haven't changed much, which is expected. Man City, the season leader in that category has only averaged 6.3/game in those same three matches.

Prior to Arteta, Arsenal averaged 7.5/game compared to 9.3/game since he took over. It's a small change, but still shows what we expected—he wants possession around the box, and to create chances from deep within the opposition's half.

But...let's go further, as Freddie was in charge of five league matches (hard to believe, but it was that many) and Emery was in charge of thirteen.

In terms of DC Under Emery, Arsenal averaged 8.5/game and under Freddie, it was only 5.0/game. So, the average did not go up that far from Emery to Arteta, but Emery has a larger sample size of thirteen games compared to three.

What if we take Emery's final three matches and compare them to Arteta's first three matches? In Emery's last three matches, our DC was 7.3/game—and as we know, in Arteta's first three matches it's 9.3/game.

What does this all mean? It's too early, but the numbers show what our eyes have seen. Compared to Emery, we're playing more incisively under Arteta. We look better going forward, and are looking to create more chances.

One last thing—this season in the league under Emery (13 games), our average DC was 8.5/game. Last season under Emery (38 games) our average DC was 10.5/game (Man City lead with 15.3/game). That just shows how Emery adopted a different approach last year compared to his time in charge this year.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Areta rotates the squad. Getting results in the FA Cup would be let, however the squad looks exhausted.

9 day break until the next PL match though (@ Palace).

Incredibly unlucky. He had just made a starting spot his own. I’ve always wanted him to succeed at Arsenal, especially in the middle of our defense and not sacrificed out on the right which does not suit him.

It seems to me that bringing in 2 CBs is at top of the list right now. Holding is struggling to get back into the team (would love to see him against Leeds), and I’m not sure Mavopranos is quite ready to make the jump.

So that leaves a rotation of Mustafi, Papa, and Luiz.

I really, really hope business for a defender can be done in January. It means we wouldn’t need to in the Summer, and that we have even more time for the squad of next season to be together.

Move Mustafi on, however we can, and bring someone else in. Please.

Different team in that 2nd half. Would have love to have been a fly on the wall for that half time talk.
