    Re: 2018-19 UEFA Competitions Thread

All I know is that I can not handle more than two English sides advancing to the semis.

    I can't do it. I can't hear it. I can't watch it. I just can't.

"Does this prove that the Premier League is the best league in the world?!!?"

    Ughhhhhhhhhhhh.

It's not a discussion that's interesting, nor is it really "provable" as people will consistently move the goalposts to fit their narrative. There's no single way to define which league is the "best" that doesn't create another problem in the argument. For instance the top 4 in England might be better than the Top 4 in the Bundesliga but can we definitely say that Huddersfield Town is better than Nurnberg? Do those teams factor into the question? Are we taking the whole league strength? Are we going to normalize the amount of money given to clubs?

Too many factors, no way to get clean answers.

Plus, I mean, it's almost certainly La Liga even if an English team wins the CL this year.

The CL is probably the only real way to compare the top leagues to each other, and La Liga has absolutely dominated the CL for most of the last decade. Even a new team winning it this season wouldn't just immediately change that.

I’d just settle for Top 4 vs Top 4 and the EPL just beat the brakes off the “best” Germany has to offer with United fielding like 5/6 2nd string guys and beating PSG.

Normalizing anything for monetary purposes doesn’t hold weight when leagues like Serie A and La Liga dug their own grave.

I’m ONLY speaking about this year btw.

The Bundesliga and its best teams have been steadily declining for a few years now, imo the Prem has been stronger for longer than just this season.

Still doesn't matter though as we cannot compare to La Liga's boys.

                    Historically....absolutely. No argument there.

I think a top 4 vs top 4 argument is even less interesting than comparing the whole league. Also it's hard for me to not look at normalizing the Premier Leagues absurd TV money, I'm sure it's been a boon for getting over the jump. Still too many variables.

The money’s probably the main reason why English clubs seem to have gotten over the hump. They’re attracting better managers, players, front office personnel, etc... but you can’t hold that against them. They’ve incentivized their product better than any league and that includes La Liga with 2 out of the 3 most popular clubs in the world.

The English structure is far from perfect but for all the props the Bundesliga gets for its affordable tickets and great atmosphere there’s nothing to show for it in terms of recent accomplishments in Europe outside of Bayern.

But I’d have a hard time arguing the case over which league is the strongest when comparing crap (Huddersfield) to crap (Nuremberg).

Tbf, all the money Prem teams have hasn't translated into success in Europe either. Bayern has won it more recently than an English team.

Then you have teams like Atleti who is usually considered a top 5 CL team, and their budget pales in comparison to even the poorest top 6 Prem team.

Just watched the Barca-Lyon match. It featured yet another case where a player is allowed to continue with a most obvious concussion. They really need to come up with something better in these situations. Temp sub when a proper test is done. Head injury sub doesn't count towards the 3. Something. After the guy finally came off after continuing in the game for a bit, he vomited numerous times, fainted, and says he has no recollection about refusing to be subbed. The fact that Lyon's trainers and coaches let the decision be left to the player is absolutely ridiculous and they should be fined.

Also, further evidence that Messi is an alien.

In rugby they have something called a Head Injury assessment. Players comes off for 10 minutes, if he passes the test, he come back on. If he fails, the temporary sub that came on for the player who is getting assessed stays on.

Also, I do believe the referee has the power to order the player off the field for an assessment.

Would be great to see something like make its way over to soccer.

First since 05/06 that no German team is in the quarterfinals, and the first time since 08/09 four English clubs made the quarters.

                                Anybody but Spurs for me.
