Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
So woke up at 7am to a burst pipe in the ceiling and water damage then a flat tire on the way to buy materials means I saw nothing of the United - Arsenal game. Besides a biased review, how bad did United look? Kind of got to listen a bit in the car but it didn't seem like either team did too much in the first half.....Yankees, Manchester United, Chicago Bears, New York RangersComment

It’s not that United played poorly, it’s just that Arsenal very much controlled the match and United never seemed to have a real plan to impact the game.
The consensus seems to be that for the second time in two matches Arteta very much got the better of OGS in terms of setup, tactics, etc.
Even when Cavani came on, there seemed no plan for how he was supposed to make an impact. He’s not a creator, but he was wide of the box more than he was inside of it from what I recall.Comment

Partey and Elneny absolutely dominated mid field today.
United really had zero identity or plan it seemed. Just sort of, out there.

Rashford and Greenwood had me clenching for long stretches, as they didn’t need much to make something happen but it seemed like they were trying to create entirely on their own.
Also, Matic came on when down a goal, which I just do not understand. van de Beek came on, also, and he seems like he should be starting without a doubt. Was Mata not fit? If he was, Matic instead of him was surprising to see.
Nobody fears Matic when up a goal.Comment

Tbf you can say the same thing about Arsenal. You guys are basically a more expensive Burnley at the moment.
Arteta literally just parks 11 men behind the ball and hopes that Auba and that kid win the game on their own. He's not out here playing Pepball, it's just the entire team playing defense and hoping for the best.
Yeah he's putting men behind the ball because the biggest thing that Arsenal side needed to fix before creativity or attacking variety was their defensive weakness and complete lack of a spine.
—
Arteta has managed 27 Premier League matches and in that time Arsenal have allowed 1.03 goals per game.
In Wenger's final 27 matches, Arsenal allowed 1.29 goals per game.
In Emery's first 27 matches, Arsenal allowed 1.37 goals per game.
In Emery's final 27 matches, Arsenal allowed 1.51 goals per game.
—
He's fixing the biggest issue first that has been neglected for years. Yes, it has come at the expense of some flair and attacking prowess, but it's been needed and his efforts are producing results so far.Comment

Going way back to this, because I think it's worth noting why there's been such a clear focus on structure and defending under Arteta. He's literally trying to fix and rewire years and years of defensive frailty and ineptitude.

I agree with nearly everything there Kreb.
My issue has been that concept apparently only applies to Arsenal and not Chelsea.
Lampard is trying to create a dynamic attacking side at a club whose entire identity has been defensive football, for over a decade. Having a not-very-good defensive record was always going to happen to a certain extent, but also the results so far of our attacking play are pretty great.
There isn’t a team we couldn’t score on, last time I’ve felt like that about Chelsea was when we had Carlo.Comment

Salah gets fouled (again) goes down because there was clearly contact and refs won’t call it unless you go down. Defender doesn’t even complain because he knows it was a penalty.
English pundits commentators: “He made the most of the contact there.” English columnists: “What a disgraceful display, What would Nobby Stiles think about this?!”
Callum Wilson and Harry Kane do exactly the same thing with even less or no contact.
English pundits/commentators: “What clever play” English columnists: *cricket noises*
Hm whatever could be the difference? [emoji848]Comment

Essentially, I think the view is that Arsenal are changing due to them not winning aside from the domestic cup, but Chelsea are changing despite their success in the league and Europe.
It doesn't make the Chelsea perception correct, though, but I think that's the narrow view that is causing Lampard to consistently get beat with the "poor defensive record" stick.
I also don't think it helps that Lampard is incredibly prickly with the media from what I've seen, so he's easy to pick on as silly as it is.Comment

Just another day for these two really.
Can’t believe they are making me feel bad for a Liverpool player, Spurs really are the worst.
The day Harry Kane gets booked for diving will be the day he closes his mouth—never.Comment
