I'm hoping at some point they'll give a reason why cross play was ruled out. I'd like to hear what they have to say about it because it has become such a selling point these days.

I think they are also perhaps letting perfect be the enemy of good here.

Worrying incessantly about differences across platforms and/or concerns with cheating is just a complete game of whack-a-mole. It's hopeless.

Why hamstring everyone who isn't worried about such disparities, but would love to engage in online connections and society play with friends on different systems?

It just feels like it's long past time for all new games to, where reasonable, enable cross platform connections. Hopefully for the next version I guess..

Nice to see, particularly as it likely is pushing buttons with some portion of the demographic for a golf game (sadly).
