True. But most of the time, the cover athlete isn't specifically given the roles of "Executive Director" and "Consultant", and signed to a long-term deal that places he/she in the series for many years to come as the face of the franchise.

It's well-known that Tiger was hands-on with EA's golf games in the past. Yes, things have changed since those EA games, but he's also still Tiger Woods, the same perfectionist who needed to sign off on all aspects of those previous golf games. He's not going to sit around idly while a game is made with his likeness all over it without having any say or input. I just don't see that happening.

I think the whole reason he even signed a deal with 2K in the first place, aside from the fact that they're helping with his foundation, is that he has creative input and control. I would assume that he wouldn't get back into games unless he has the same or similar level of hands-on interaction with the game's creation as he did in the past with EA. Here's another quote from Tiger himself in that press release:

“I am looking forward to making my return to the video game landscape, and with 2K and HB Studios, I’ve found the right partners to make it happen,” said Tiger Woods. “I’m honored to take part in this opportunity and look forward to sharing my expertise and insights as we build the future of golf video games together.

I think Arlington and a couple of others who have chimed in here are exactly right. Nothing in Tiger's past indicates he's just taking a million bucks or whatever to let them put his face on the cover. He just turned down a billion dollars to join LIV (and I get that with him it's not just that he's already a billionaire and doesn't need the money, it's about the PGA, legacy, tradition, etc).

I think it's *very* safe to say that he, as a player, and as a consultant, designer, and generally a "final stamp" guy is going to be all over this game. Even if it's still in the old engine, and in fact ESPECIALLY if it's still in the old Unity engine for one final cycle, the only thing 2k can really do at this point is fix the leaderboards, improve the graphics and crowds, even incrementally (add caddies?), and then use the money they spent with Tiger to let him advise and consult his way through every aspect of this game, to make it the final finished product that 2k21 could have been 2 years ago given more time, money, and his input.

I'm convinced it's not going to be a next gen product, and I'm fine with that. But I'm with Arlington and others who have studied and seen what Tiger's influence and stamp is on the EA games. He's never been, and especially NOW, is not in a place in his life where he's just going to sell his likeness for the cover of a video game for a couple mil. No way.

I think we should all be very hopeful for a massive upgrade to 2k21 very soon, and then of course we will all be salivating for Spring 23 for EA. Best position us golf gamers have been in for more than half a decade. I think they will both succeed in their own way, and we will have 2 very different, but excellent games to enjoy for the next 2 years.

How can ya not be happy about that scenario playing out?

Let’s hope it’s the same way 10 years later with 2K.

Your last bit is exactly what I don’t get. Who cares if someone prefers 2k over EA or vice versa. At the end of the day 2k will make ea better and ea will make 2k better. That’s what competition does.

It’s going to be amazing when both games are finally on shelf’s and we can move past the speculation.

Seems like forever ago that 2K21 came out.

I guess I don't see why, after PGA 2K21 sold over 2.5 million copies, would they go out of the way to sign Tiger Woods to what one would assume to have been a lucrative deal as an Executive Director and consultant, only for them to say, "Tiger, we don't need you to do anything other than smile for the cover photo."

Why would 2K do that? They could easily make marginal updates to 2K21 and call it a day, leaving TW out of the equation.

And when you look at Tiger's track record as part of a sponsorship or marketing endeavor, he's not that kind of spokesman that shills something that he's not involved in. He doesn't just go around throwing his likeness and name on things that he's not a part of at an in-depth level. He's not like other athletes who show up on every other TV ad, selling pain medication and car insurance and delivery pizza, etc...

From all indications, when Tiger signs up for something, he's all in and is a big part of the creative work.
21 is the best game no doubt but the results of the swing don't make perfect sense. Hopefully Woods' input will iron this out. I wait to see what good his input has on the game this time around. He is not a developer and there have been a lot of ideas thrown around on this and other message boards about what effect swing path open face closed face swing speed should have on the shot. Do they need Woods to tell them that?

I hold out my eternal hope for a 3-click swing.

It won't be included but I'll be here to complain about the omission.

Without the majors I don’t see how this franchise keeps up once EA brings back their game spring 23
