Thirty game update

Painful, painful games.

Team record: 12-17-1 / 28th in NHL / 14th in East

Injury update
In a stroke of good and needed news, D Sheldon Souray has return to the active line up and LW Zach Parise will see a return in tonight’s game against the Rangers, Parise who has been out for the better part of two months is eager to lace up the blades and hopefully get this season back to an even keel.
With Parise returning to the line up the Devils have returned forward Michal Repik to the Albany Devils.

Coach Niedermayer on the past ten games

We came through the last stretch I think about as good as could be expected, we are a hurting club and running thin on replacements. there is only so much you can ask of a team in our situation, we climbed another spot in the standings so that was really great to see for the guys here who have really put their best foot forward and done their best out there.
It is a big lift getting Parise and Souray back for tonight’s contest against the Rangers, we look forward to have both of these key guys back in the line up, hopefully we can move forward and not loose more guys to injury this season.

40 game update

Team record: 14-22-4 / 30th in NHL / 15th in East

Injury update

LW Tomas Tatar has been cleared to resume play, but will be sent back to Albany along with Vladimir Zharkov as Ilya Kovalchuk has been cleared to play.

Kovalchuk, after only playing four games this season received a check from Chris Pronger that fractured the snipers collar bone and also left him with a sever concussion, Originally Kovalchuk was listed as four months but the winger has cut that time by two weeks to make an early return to NHL action.

Press conference with Kovalchuk

Yeah that was pretty scary, and something I wish no one has to deal with. I can’t even tell you how long I wasn’t able to even move, I just couldn’t. I would immediately get sick and it would set me back each time.

I wanted to be out here with the guys, even though were having a rough season you want to be with your team no matter what, words really don’t describe how excited I am to be able to return.

Right now all that remains for me is to get back into game shape, once I was able to return to the ice and skate everything seemed to be a down hill ride form there and went really quickly and easily, my symptoms backed off and completely went away, I haven’t felt anything like that for the past week after full contract practices with the guys.

Yeah, right now I think the coach has me on line two, mostly because Zach and Patrik have played a while together on the first line when Zach was healthy and he wants to ease me back into the line up, I expect to come out with a lot of jump but its going to take me a little while to get back into the swing of things at the NHL level.

Coach Niedermayer on the team
Gotta give these guys a lot of credit, we have been dealt some harsh hands to play and they did the best they could with what they had.

We are really excited to get Ilya back and now we can move forward with at least what we started this season with and see how it goes from there.

As it stands Ilya will be on the second unit with Pahlsson and Tedenby to at least start, I want to give him a chance to catch up to NHL speed and I don’t think asking him to log 20 minutes a night is good for him right now, so ill try to keep him in the 14-16 range for the first few games and see how it goes from there.

At this point we gotta ignore all the noise so to speak and look forward to our next game against the Sabers here.

Rough go with all the injuries this season man. Make some moves before next year and you will be right on track.

At least Kovy is coming back, hard to keep your head above water when all the top guys start going down.

Trade deadline update

Team record: 21-36-7 / 30th in NHL / 15th in East

Trade break down

New Jersey trades:

G Marty Turco (HYB) 37 years old 2M 1 year remaining on his contract 83 overall C-/D/C potential

To Calgary for:

G Anton Khudobin (HYB) 26 years old .875M 1 year remaining on his contract 76 overall C/C/C potential

2013 6th round pick (CGY)

Scott Stevens on the trade
Marty was struggling with us here this season and Calgary was in search of a veteran tandem goalie to play with Dan Ellis, since the flames are 9th in their division and want to push into a playoff position I think this deal made sense for both sides. We believe Biron can finish out this year here with us and the price was right for Calgary to bring in a veteran goalie.

New Jersey trades:
LW Shawn Thornton (GRN) 35 years old 1.5M 1 year remaining on his contract 80 overall C-/C-/C potential

To Colorado for:

2013 7th round pick

[/b]Scott Stevens on the trade[/b]
With Colorado being in the third place in their division and looking forward to the playoffs they were searching for veteran depth and to add an element of toughness to their fourth line, we were able to add to our draft pick pool by completing this trade and it made sense with Shawn approaching the end of his tenure here in New Jersey.

New Jersey trades:

LW Patrik Elias (SNP) 36 years old 6M 1 year remaining on his contract 85 overall D/D-/D potential

C Samuel Pahlsson (GRN) 35 years old 1.6M 1 year remaining on his contract 83 overall C-/C-/C- potential

To Dallas for:

LW Darcy Hordichuk (TGH) 32 years old .990M 1 year remaining on his contract 81 overall C/C/C potential

D Clinton Rielly (TWD) 19 years old .845M per season 3 years remaining on his contract 72 overall B/B/B- potential

2013 3rd round pick (DAL)

Scott Stevens on the trade:
This one was hard for me personally to negotiate as Elias has been a long time Devil and corner stone to our organization, but with Dallas being fourth in their division and looking to return to the playoffs, and our rebuild going on here in New Jersey this trade just made sense.

Dallas gets a proven scorer and playoff performer and a great face-off centre who can handle the minutes and tough areas on the ice, we bring in some toughness to replace the departed Thornton and add a pick and prospect to our rebuild.

New Jersey trades:
D Anton Volchenkov (DFD) 31 years old 4.25M per season 4 years remaining on his contract 87 overall C/C/C potential

D Sheldon Souray (OFD) 36 years old 2.8M 1 year remaining on his contract 83 overall D/D/C- potential

To Carolina for:

D Ryan Murphy (OFD) 19 years old .895M per season 3 years remaining on his contract 74 overall B/B-/B potential

2013 2nd round pick (CAR)

Scott Stevens on the trade:
Again we felt this would be the best opportunity to move out some of our veteran guys to bring in some prospect depth to our rebuilding effort here in Jersey.

We would have liked to retain Anton as his defensive play is fantastic and he is signed to a good contract with term remaining but we are excited to bring in a young offensive defenseman in Ryan Murphy, something our organization lacks right now and a 2013 second round pick.

Volchenkov and Souray will head to Carolina who sits in second place in the East and get a shot at playoff hockey.

New Jersey signs free agent:

D Steve Staios (DFD) 39 years old .525M 1 year deal 80 overall D-/D/D potential

Scott Stevens on the pick up:
We are bringing in Steve to help us finish out the year here, as we seen Souray and Volchenkov leave yesterday in free agency it left a hole in our lines we needed to fill, we are certain Staios will be able to do just that with ease.

Updated New Jersey lines:

Line one
Ilya Kovalchuk Travis Zajac Zach Parise

Line two
Evgeny Artyukhin Dainius Zubrus Mattias Tedenby

Line three
Darcy Hordichuk David Steckel Vladimir Zharkov

Line four
David Clarkson Zenon Konopka Jordin Tootoo

Defense one
Henrik Tallinder Andrew Greene

Defense two
Mark Fraser Mark Fayne

Defense three
Matthew Corrente Steve Staios

League movement at the deadline
