Calgary Flames: Set Fire to Ice | A Fantasy Draft Story
This will be a story of the Calgary Flames. I did a fantasy draft and started with the 7 overall pick and picked Logan Couture. The team will be built around him. Here is what the team looks like:

I like young teams with room to grow. It's going to be a fun year. The lines look like this:

Calgary Falls in Washington, Seth Jones Records First Career Point
--Washington
"It was a hard fought game. Our guys battled out there," said head coach and team GM Levi Anderson. "We made a couple bad mistakes; that comes with the territory of being a young team, though. We will get better."
For a team that got beat Anderson was in good spirits. He talked highly of the efforts of captains Logan Couture and Ryan O'Reilly. O'Reilly scored two of the Flames goals, both set up by Couture. Couture had scored the other goal. Rookie defenseman Seth Jones assisted one of O'Reilly goals, recording his first career point.
Jones' fellow rookies did not fair so well, however. Highly touted center/winger Nathan MacKinnon struggled giving the puck up multiple times. Center Aleksander Barkov played similarly to MacKinnon. One of his giveaways set up Little's second goal.
All this really means is to remember Levi Anderson's press conference: this is a young team, they'll make mistakes. They're also very talented young players and their future is bright.

Calgary Loses Second Game Of Season
--Columbus
It wasn't a fun game to watch. Goalie James Reimer struggled, allowing 6 goals. Four of which were on rebounds off of his pads. As Reimer put it, "I have to play better. There is no way I should have given up all those rebound type goals. I have to do a better job of corralling those."
Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk doesn't put the blame on Reimer, however. "We [the defenseman] have to do a better job of positioning to sweep some of those out of the way. I know Reimer is going to take the blame, but it's on us too. Oduya and I are the leaders of the defensemen here and we've got take some responsibility in teaching Seth [Jones] and those guys. We all have to play more responsible out there or games like this will happen."
Coach Anderson echoed much of what Reimer and Shattenkirk had to say. He talked about positioning and playing responsible when it came to the defense. Added that some of the offensive guys have to come down and help out as well. As for Reimer, Anderson talked about it being a learning process, "He was playing on back to back days and that's never easy. Maybe I shouldn't have done that. Just like the players I am a young coach. This is learning process for me too. It could've been he was feeling tired or sluggish. I haven't gotten to talk to James yet so when we do it will be a learning process for everyone involved and we're going to figure it all out."
Logan Couture notched two more goals taking his total up to three and bringing his point total to five in just two games.

Calgary Records First Point, Loses in Shootout

The Calgary Flames lost in a disappointing fashion in yesterday's game to the Vancouver Canucks. After going down 2-0 in the first period the Flames battled back with goals from Cody Hodgson and Eric Wellwood. They overcame many of the penalties they took killing four of five. It looked like they might get their first win but to no avail. Canucks winger Pascal Dupuis ended up scoring the clinching goal in the shootout.
"Losing in a shootout is always tough," started coach Anderson, "honestly, it is just a terrible feeling. We get a point from it so thats good I guess. A consolation prize for forcing overtime, if thats how people would like to look at it. It stinks to lose the way we did. We faced a lot of adversity with those penalties and to kill them way we did it would have been great to get that win. We'll move on, however, and look to our next game."
When asked about the teams performance as whole he seemed happy even with the loss, "It's early, only three games in now. This isn't how we wanted to start, obviously, but this was our best game defensively and for James [Reimer]. We took a couple silly penalties and we'll work on that. I think this game was a step in the right direction for the team and we can use it as stepping stone. We have a couple days to prepare for Montreal and game film from today will be a good tool to teach the players about themselves."
Rookie Nathan MacKinnon showed off some good moves in the shootout with a an awesome backhand-forehand-backhand goal. He said it felt great to show off some moves, though it stunk it didn't actually count for his first goal. He also added that he felt terrible about the loss and it'd be a tough one to get over saying, "When Wellwood scored that shorty I thought we were going to pull out. Then I scored my shootout goal and thought we had for sure. It's a sour feeling for sure."
The team plays their next game against the Montreal Canadiens on September 9.
