SEPTEMBER 4, 2017
TATAR NAMED QUEBEC CITY CAPTAIN

Today Quebec City announced the very first set of players to ever stitch on the team's "C" and "A" patches when it awarded recent free agent signee Tomas Tatar the captaincy, along with awarding veteran defensemen Zach Bogosian and Tyler Myers alternate captaincy.

"It's an unbelievable honor to be this team's very first captain, and I'm going to do everything I can to help this team grow and achieve success," Tatar said. "We have a great group of guys in the locker room and we're hungry to show you all who we really are. We're out to prove that 30 other teams made giant mistakes when they let us go."

A veteran of nearly 400 games and only 27, Tatar has been thrust into the role of locker room leader in Quebec City. With that comes a place on the first line next to Martin Hanzal and Grabner. We'll see how this all shakes out in the coming months, but Tatar certainly seems to be focused on the right things as a mentor in the Reign locker room.

Re: A Storm Brews in Quebec City: the Rise of the Reign (NHL 18)

SEPTEMBER 19, 2017

Even in defeat, one thing was abundantly clear on Tuesday evening in Quebec City: this is a hockey town. On par with the Bostons, Torontos, Detroits and Montreals, the passion Quebec City shares for hockey is near unbridled and it showed tonight as the Reign took to the ice for the very first time in a game at Videotron Centre.

130.1dB. That may not mean much to the average reader, but to the Quebec City brass it means investment. It means a community already enamored with their new club. You see, dB, to those who don't know, means decibels. And tonight the Quebec City crowd at Videotron registered as the seventh loudest venue of all-time, clocking in at a staggering 130.1dB.

The moment took place as the Reign stormed back with 3 unanswered goals to tie the game at 4 near the end of the second period. Nearly 15 minutes in, Ryan Dzingel, fed on a beautiful assist from Matt Nieto, deposited the puck in the upper right corner of the net. Before Columbus backup G Merzlikins could lift his glove, the puck was already hitting the back of the net. The crowd lost it.

This optimism, the excitement, sets a tone for the season in Quebec City. Even when they lose, the crowd still seems involved on a level 99% of crowds aren't. We'll see if this holds up after a potential 50+ loss season, but tonight was a special night for the people of Quebec City.

OCTOBER 8, 2017
QUEBEC CITY SHOWS PROMISE ON OFFENSE, STRUGGLE ON DEFENSE IN PRESEASON

Quebec City finished up its first ever preseason yesterday with a record of 2-5. The surprise of the preseason has been the Reign's potent offense at times, with the team scoring 4 goals or more in 3 games throughout the build up to the regular season. Perhaps even more surprising has been the early struggles of the team's veteran core of defenders. At the end of the preseason, Quebec City was second to last in goals allowed at 4.14 per game.

Much of the struggles lie with the team's starting goaltender, Michal Neuvirth. Allowing 4.92 goals per game in the preseason, Neuvirth looked slow, sluggish, and generally off his game. It remains to be seen if these are early jitters as a result of the change to a new team or a legitimate problem, but the stellar play of the team's backup goaltender, Joonas Korpisalo, means we could see a much more competitive battle for the starting goalie position moving forward. In all, Korpisalo allowed nearly half the amount of goals per game that Neuvirth did.

PRESEASON STATS OF NOTE
Philip Danault: 6 PTS, 2 G, 4 A
Ryan Dzingel: 5 PTS, 2 G, 3 A
Devante Smith-Pelly: 4 PTS, 2 G, 2 A
Alexander Burmistrov: 4 PTS, 2 G, 2 A
Nolan Patrick: 2 PTS, 2 A
Tomas Tatar: 4 PTS, 1 G, 3 A
Zach Bagosian: 4 PTS, 2 G, 2 A
Martin Hanzal: 3 PTS, 1 G, 2 A
